Dear Friends,

This Wednesday we begin the holy season of Lent.  This season of grace affords us the opportunity to grow in our rela onship with Christ through the disciplines of prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving.  I’d like to focus this column on the discipline of fas ng.

Unfortunately, many people do not understand the benefits of fas ng; therefore, they do not embark upon the rewarding journey of fas ng.  However, there are some even in the secular culture who have become proponents of fas ng, albeit o en mes for the wrong reasons (e.g. losing weight; body cleansing; etc).  True, there are definitely physical benefits to fas ng; however, for our Lenten  purposes, we are meant to fast in order to experience the spiritual benefits.

The spiritual benefits of fas ng are many:

We learn to delay our desire for instant gra fica on,  therefore growing in self‐mastery.  This self‐mastery leads to having more control over our appe tes and emo ons.

We experience clarity of thought which helps us to have more focus when we pray, and even to have more focus in our daily lives.

We become more a uned to our spiritual desires.

By experiencing physical hunger, we become more aware of our hunger for the Lord.

We experience a deeper solidarity with the poor who o en go without food and the many other comforts that we enjoy each day.

We can offer up our sacrifice of fas ng for par cular         inten ons.

My sugges on for your Lenten fast is to choose something that will truly be a sacrifice for you.  You can choose to go without a par cular food that you regularly eat.  You can choose to give up drinking alcohol or coffee.  You can even choose to fast from social media or from some form of technology that you use on a daily basis.  Also, I would encourage you to actually fast from food on par cular days during Lent.  For example, you might try to eat just bread and water on the Fridays of Lent.  Obviously, you want to be sure your health is good enough to fast from food.

Let’s pray for one another that the Lenten season will be a  me of great grace not only for ourselves but for our en re parish family.

Miscellaneous:

Recently, 14 “Catholic” senators voted against banning late term abor ons.  This is truly tragic and scandalous.  These are the same senators who argue that we must care for the            vulnerable in our country (which we must!), and yet they fail to defend the most vulnerable: innocent children in the womb.      It sickens me.

Well, I have to give credit to the Eagles for a great victory.  It would have been nice if the Patriots’ defense actually showed up.  That, in my mind, would literally have been a game            changer.

Tom Brady gets his third MVP at 40 years old.  That’s very           impressive.

Congratulations to all of the students who put on an excellent production of Aristocats this past weekend. Our students showed their singing, dancing and acting talents. We are very pleased to share with you that all our grade eight students who took the entrance exam for the The Prout School, Bishop Hendricken Preparatory High School, and LaSalle Academy were accepted. Out of all of the students who took the entrance exam, Luke Trebisacci scored the second highest exam out of all of the boys and Haley Bush-Nickerson scored second highest out of all of the girls who took the exam.

We held both the school–wide Spelling and Geography Bees in January. The winner of the Geography Bee was Luke Trebisacci and the runner- up was Joseph Lavalle. Spelling Bee winner was Luke Trebisacci and the runner-up was Joseph Brown. In the state wide Spelling Bee both Luke Trebisacci and Joseph Brown tied for fourth place. Congratulations to all of our students for their hard work and achievements.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES

Oh ever immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, Comfortess of the Afflicted, you know my wants, my trou-

bles, my sufferings. Look upon me with mercy. When you appeared in the grotto of Lourdes, you made it a privileged sanctuary where you dispense

your favors, and where many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmi-ties, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with unbounded confidence

to implore your maternal intercession. My loving Mother, obtain my request. I will try to imitate your virtues so that I may one day share your company and

bless you in eternity. Amen.
