9:00 –carpet session in keyworker groups (Usually literacy) 9:45 – developmental play (free flow) - children can choose from a range of

indoor and outdoor activities that have been taken from their interests the previous day. There will also be a focus activity that your child is asked to do.

During this time fruit is availaible. 10:50 – tidy up 11.00- carpet session and getting ready for lunch. 11:30 – Lunchtime 12:30 -Register and carpet session in keyworker groups (usually maths) 1:00 – Developmental play and focus activities continued. 2: 15 – Tidy up time 2:30 - Whole class snack time. 2:45- Outside for play 3:00 – Story/song time 3.10- Home!

We regularly share stories and poems with the children and foster a love of reading along with teaching the mechanics.

ComprehensionSome children will be able to comprehend a story that has been read to them really well even if they are not yet able to read. Other children can read but are not able to comprehend. Therefore it is important that you support your child with the comprehension of a story as well as the mechanics of reading. You could…•Ask your child/ren to make predictions •Retell the story in their own words.•Ask questions about the story . (E.g. can you think of a different ending?)•Role play the story.•Follow the guidance at the back of the books.

Have fun with the story!

We follow a programme called Letters and Sounds. It is divided into 6 phases. We focus on phases 2-4.

Phase 1 focuses primarily on listening skills- covered at nursery. Phase 2 onwards focuses on teaching the individual sounds,

followed by the strategies children need to read. We sing Jolly phonics song, each letter has a song and action.

When the children become confident in recognising each sound they can begin to read and write simple words.

We encourage the children to sound out the word such as c a t (segmenting)

They are then encouraged to blend the sounds together cat (blending)

These are the skills they use for reading and writing.

It is really important that the children learn the ‘pure’ sound that each letter makes. This will make reading and writing much easier.

For example. ‘ssssssssssss’ not ‘suh’ ‘mmmmmm’ not ‘muh’ ‘fffffffffffffff’ not ‘fuh’

The sounds are NOT taught in alphabetical order.They are taught in sets that can quickly be used tomake a number of words that the children can readand write. http://www.letters-and-sounds.com/

Your child will also be learning ‘remembering words’ These are words that cannot be sounded out.

Eg: the, to, I, go, no

We will be teaching these alongside the individual sounds. Your child will bring home a word game that you can keep and play until they have remembered all of the words on the game. (Sent home 4th November)

There is a very close link between difficulty with phonics and hearing.

School reading books are changed once a week. Please share the book with your child/ren for a short time each

night or morning. Please work out the right time for your child/family Bring books bags, reading diaries and word games in every day. When you have read with your child please write in their

reading record.

Parents helpers Parents readers – After half term you we welcome you to come

and help with reading. Please speak to your class teacher if you are able to help.

Support with reading makes a huge difference and is really

appreciated.

There will be daily maths sessions where we will cover the EYFS. This will include; problem solving, songs, stories, games and activities.

We believe it is vital that children understand the value and

purpose of maths in everyday life and aim to provide regular ‘everyday maths’ experiences.

Growth Mindset

We are teaching maths skills along with a growth mindset attitude towards maths.

It is vital that children develop a secure foundation of maths. Careful counting- All children must be taught to count accurately and to understand what numbers really mean. We encourage the children to talk about numbers and think of their own problems that they would like to solve.

Along with daily maths sessions, maths is integrated throughout the day.

It is VITAL that your child/ren have the opportunities to represent maths in a way that makes sense to them.

Children can learn mathematical tricks, this does not mean they understand the concept.

Discussion and mathematical language is key to their development.

The process is just as valuable as the outcome.
