Golf Gadgets That Can Help OlderGolfers
Dear Savvy SeniorDo you know of any golfing gadgets or equipment
that can help senior golfers? My 78-year-old dad lovesto play golf, but arthritis in his hands makes griping theclub difficult. He also has a hard time bending over totee up or retrieve the ball. Is there anything out therethat can help?
Helpful SonDear Helpful,There are actually a number of golfing gadgets and
accessories on the market today that can help oldergolfers who struggle with arthritis, injuries or loss ofmobility. Here are some possible solutions that canhelp keep your dad on the golf course.
Gripping HelpersGripping a golf club is a very common problem for
seniors with arthritis or those who have hand orelbow injuries, or any condition that affects theirhand strength. To help alleviate this problem thereare specially designed golf gloves and grips that canmake a big difference.
Depending on the severity of your dad’s problem,an inexpensive option to check out is the Bionic GolfGloves (bionicgloves.com, 877-524-6642) which areergonomically designed to improve grip with lesseffort. Or the Power Glove (powerglove.com, 800-836-3760) that uses a Velcro strap to secure the clubto your hand. These gloves run between $20 and$30.
Another option to consider is to get oversizedgrips installed on your dad’s clubs. These can makegripping the club easier and more comfortable, andare also very good at absorbing shock. Oversizedgrips are usually either one-sixteenth-inch or one-eighth-inch larger in diameter than a standard grip, and cost around $5 to $10 per grip. Your local golfpro can help with this.
Or, for a grip-and-glove combination fix, check outthe new Quantum Grip (quantumgrip.com, 855-692-3784) that incorporates hook Velcro golf grips andcompanion golf gloves that have mating loop Velcromaterial in the palm. This insures gripping power andprevents the club from slipping in your hand. Theprice: $30 per grip or $189 for a set of seven, plus$40 per glove.
Bending SolutionsIf back, hip or knee problems or lack of flexibility
is also hampering your dad on the golf course, thereare a number of innovative gadgets that can elimi-nate the bending and stooping that comes with tee-ing up the ball, repairing divots, marking the ball onthe green, retrieving a ball or tee on the ground, andpicking a club, sand rake or flag stick up off theground.
These stoop-proof devices run anywhere from afew dollars up to $70 and can be found at sites likeKool Tee (kool-tee.com, 800-324-6205), Tee Pal(teepalpro.com), and the Upright Golf company(uprightgolf.com, 319-268-0939).
Ergonomic Golf CartsThere are also a number of great ergonomic golf
carts that can help older golfers who still like to walkthe course. These are three or four-wheeled, light-weight push carts that provide great stability, can beadjusted to fit your body size, and fold into a com-pact size in a matter of seconds for easy transport.Sun Mountain Sports (sunmountain.com), Bag Boy(bagboycompany.com) and Caddytek (caddytek.com)are three companies that make these type of carts atprices ranging anywhere from $130 to around $200.
Or, for seniors with severe mobility loss or whoare disabled, there’s the SoloRider golf cart (solorid-er.com, 800-898-3353) that provides the ability toplay from a seated position. Retailing for $9,450, thiscart is lightweight and precisely balanced so it canbe driven on tee boxes and greens without causingany damage. And federal ADA laws require that allpublically owned golf courses allow them.

Scott Schley, Ashland Township, is almost a perma-nent fixture during the Dodge County Free Fair. A fairboard director, Schley could be found around the live-stock and assists with almost every judging activity inthe arena. Wednesday Scott was assisting with weighingin beef cows. Shelby Kiltinen of Kasson brings her beefcow into the stall where Scott calls out the weight tosomeone working at a table opposite the scale. Photo byRandy Carlsen.
Successful with his sheep!Garrett Thompson, son of Nathan and Carmen
Thompson of Hayfield, has shown sheep at the DodgeCounty Free Fair since he was in the third grade andhe's now a junior. Also, winning is not something newfor the Hayfield FFAer either. He has had quite a cham-pion streak with his breeder ewe and market lambs. Hisfamily raises lambs for other people to purchase andshow. The Thompson family has 45 right now.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Nathaniel J. Broughten, son ofDebbie G. Broughten of West Concord, Minn. and Shane L.Broughten, of Kenyon, Minn., was recently promoted to hiscurrent rank upon graduation from recruit training at RecruitTraining Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Broughten received the early promotion for outstandingperformance during all phases of the training cycle. Trainingwhich included classroom study and practical instruction onnaval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and sur-vival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis wasalso placed on physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations".This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence theyneed to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed togalvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedica-tion, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through thepractical application of basic Navy skills and the core valuesof Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly "Navy"flavor was designed to take into account what it means to bea Sailor.
Broughten is a 2011 graduate of Northland High Schoolof Remer, Minn.

It has been two years since your life did end, July twenty-three two thousand ten. We lost part of our hearts that day, though you are gone you're not far away. God needed someone special, so He reached down and took your hand. The door on earth was closed, hard for us to understand. He opened heaven’s windows, through the window comes the light of our special angel God took home that night. When we're feeling lonely which happens now and then, you let us know in a special way you're with us once again. It may be in a flower or just a gentle breeze, but whatever it is that happens we are very pleased. You are in our hearts forever, you are in our hearts today. We will meet on the golden shore when God takes us away.
Please drink responsibly. In Memory of Marie Gilbertson, July 23, 2010
