Advocating Public WorksIT’S TIME TO STEP OUT OF THE

SHADOWS

AS PUBLIC WORKS PROFESSIONALS ,WE EXCEL AT EVERYTHING WE DO, FROM MAINTAINING OUR AGING INFRASTRUCTURE…

…TO PUTTING OUR COMMUNITY BACK TOGETHER, AFTER MOTHER NATURE TEARS IT APART

BUT THERE IS ONE THING WE ARE NOT GOOD AT..

ADVOCATING OURSELVES

FOR OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS AT PUBLIC PROTECTION, IT HAS NEVER BEEN AN ISSUE.

BECAUSE THEY HAD LOTS OF HELP FROM THE MEDIA, FOR INSTANCE…

WHAT CHILD DID NOT WANT TO RIDE ALONG WITH..

OR FIGHT FIRES, AND RESCUE PEOPLE LIKE..

AS FAR AS PUBLIC WORKS GOES, THIS IS ALL WE HAVE RECEIVED.

SO WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

WE ALL NEED TO TAKE A MORE ACTIVE ROLE IN ADVOCATING OURSELVES, AND WE CAN START IN OUR OWN BACKYARDS.

Identifying and Advocating Charlotte County Public Works

CHARLOTTE COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT

The Charlotte County Public Works Department was started in 1969 and a logo was created for all of the equipment and vehicles of the “Road Department.”

MOSQUITO CONTROL / LANDFILL

Other County Departments had equally individual logos.

THIS EMBLEM WAS 14 INCHES IN DIAMETER, AND THE DEPARTMENT IDENTIFIER WAS 1½ INCHES HIGH. THIS WAS STANDARD UNTIL 1987.

The Charlotte County identity is based on the principle that we are all one organization, in the late 1970’s a unified logo was applied to all County vehicles and equipment.

THIS WOULD REMAIN STANDARD UNTIL 1998.

In 1987 the emblem was again modified and reduced in size to 13 inches, and the department identifiers were reduced to1 inch.

IN 2007 THE EMBLEM WAS AGAIN MODIFIED, BUT THE SIZE REMAINS THE SAME TO THIS DAY.

From 1998 all County vehicles and equipment received either a 6 or 8 inch emblem, with the department identifiers reduced in size to ¾ of an inch.

TO PROMOTE AND CLEARLY IDENTIFY ALL OF THE MANY SERVICES THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT PROVIDES ?

What kind of statement does this truck make?

OTHER MUNICIPALITIES HAVE ALREADY BEGUN TO ENHANCE THE VISIBILITY OF THEIR VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT…..

● It is of vital importance that we build a strong cohesive identity through the use and display of our logos.●The public must be able to easily recognize the services provided by Charlotte County Government, such as the Public Works Department.

.

AND NOW MY PROPOSALS…

The Charlotte County logo is a valuable asset that symbolizes the quality and consistency of the Charlotte County Government’s services, and the departments that provide them, such as those from Public Works.

8 INCH EMBLEM WITH ¾INCH DEPARTMENT IDENTIFIERS AND ¾ WEB ADDRESS.

I propose to enlarge the current size of the emblem and identifiers from what it is now…

14 INCH EMBLEM, WITH 2’’DEPARTMENT IDENTIFIER AND 1½ INCH WEB ADDRESS.

To this..

● INCREASED VISIBILITY OF OUR VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT TO THE CITIZENS OF CHARLOTTE COUNTY .● INCREASED EMPLOYEE ACCOUNTABILITY AND PRIDE.● INCREASED PUBLIC AWARENESS OF OUR WORK.

The benefit of doing this?

PROPOSAL: TO APPLY THE WORD “SUPERVISOR,” IN 2 INCH HIGH LETTERS TO THE REAR EXTERIOR QUARTER PANELS OF SUPERVISORY PERSONNEL’S PICKUP TRUCKS.

OTHER AGENCIES CURRENTLY EMPLOYING THIS TYPE OF COMMAND STRUCTURE IDENTIFICATION INCLUDE THE CHARLOTTE COUNTY FIRE AND EMS, AND SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT.

M

BENEFIT: To enhance the visibility of supervisors in the workplace, and It also gives the general public a person they can talk to when stopping by a worksite.

●When the general public sees a supervisor at a jobsite, tends to infer a higher level of quality in the work being done.

●Identifies point of contact in an emergency situation.

IF YOU ARE VISITING A RESIDENCE TO DISCUSS A COMPLAINT, THEY CAN QUICKLY SEE THAT YOU ARE NOT ONLY A COUNTY EMPLOYEE, BUT SOMEONE IN CHARGE. IT MAY PUT THEM AT EASE WHEN OPENING THE DOOR OR TALKING TO YOU ABOUT THEIR ISSUE.

The size of the lettering and emblems should be proportionate to the size of the vehicle…

HOW MUCH, AND HOW SOON ?

C O S T S : M AT E R I A L S A N D L A B O R ?

I M P L E M E N TAT I O N ?

COST OF ENLARGED DECAL SET INSTALLED ON AN EXISTING VEHICLE INCLUDING REMOVAL OF OLD EMBLEMS $87.50

●Cost of existing decal set including installation on new incoming vehicle $49.10

●Cost of enlarged decal set including installation on a new incoming vehicle $62.50

●A difference of only $13.40

Cost of “Supervisor” decal set including installation on a new or existing vehicle $17.00

Our department currently has 5 supervisors and installation on those vehicles would be a total of $ 85.00

A PHASED IMPLEMENTATION MAY BE NECESSARY

The current Public Works inventory of 148 vehicles and pieces equipment would cost $12,950.00 to change all of the emblems at once. Current budget status may not be able to support this option.

Implementation options :●“Enlarged” set to be installed on all new

incoming purchases. (approximately 22 per year)

●“Enlarged” decal installation could then be done during routine vehicle service.

●One division at a time.●“Supervisor” Identification Per Director.

SUMMARYThe benefits to making these enhancements are:●The public will be able to easily

recognize Public Works vehicles.● Increased visibility of supervisors in

the workplace.●Increased employee accountability

and pride.

All this for less than $300.00 per year

THANK YOU, FOR YOU TIME AND ATTENTION.

HITS AND MISSESHere are some examples of some

who have hit the mark, and others that have room for improvement (in my own opinion)

AND THE MISSES …

SO, WHAT CAN WE TAKE AWAY FROM THIS?

1. As far as branding goes, bigger is always better2. Don’t be afraid to be “Loud and Proud”3. We can make a statement, without saying a

word

Any Questions?
