FROM THE ROSTRUM
“Strange times indeed”
Well Covid-19 is certainly making its mark; such an impact has not been
seen since the onset of the Second World War!
All the stories from my auctioneering mentors and colleagues who have
long since passed of “control and shut downs” were stories of a dreadful
time in history…………………or so I thought, yet here we are at war again
but this time with an invisible enemy!
The Livestock Auctioneers Association (LAA) have managed to ensure
that we stay “open for business” although not “as normal” it must be
said. However, we are, like our clients in the farming industry a
“resourceful bunch” when needed!
For all my 44 years of auctioneering it has been paramount to get as
many bidders around the ring as possible and to encourage as many
farmers to use this wonderful meeting place called Frome Livestock
Market, suddenly, we are told to restrict all vendors from entering the
market and buyer numbers are restricted to a mere 20 in the ring (store
cattle) to comply with social distancing!! Having to select the buyers is
not a pleasurable task but one which has to be done and everyone has
been very supportive and understanding. 700 head have been passing
under my hammer regularly and at prices which can only be described
as excellent. Younger cattle have been particularly sought as the grass
and sunshine begin to come in abundance.
We are no longer allowed to auction breeding stock, bulls, cows and
calves, breeding sheep and dairy all prohibited. This has led me to
resurrect my old skills of auctioning the finished cattle and cull cows.
The last time doing this in earnest was in the 1980’s,…….. never mind, a
few years on (too many to mention) we are back in the saddle! Although
the initial impact saw numbers and trade steady, some normality is
returning as we get use to the new regime and trade particularly for the
barren cows is firming once again with averages of 107ppk and best
dairy meat cows 110 – 120pkg. Good beef bred cows grossing almost
£1200 last week. Plainer cows 70 – 85pkg and all providing fair returns to
the vendors.
The fat sheep section has seen strong numbers (800 head) last week, but
like the cattle trade suffered a short relapse before regaining strength
and now we are seeing hoggets’ at 200ppk plus and new season lamb
260pkg. Calves have also seen a change with a need to maximize buyer
space they have temporally moved to the dairy ring. Numbers and trade
have been good and combined with the weaned calves have seen
entries in excess of 200 head.
Dairy has been only allowed by private treaty selling direct farm to farm,
this together with a number of milk wholesaler contracts in free fall has
seen life difficult. However, some sales have taken place and we have
managed to sell one herd which was destined to market prior to shut
down and a number of fresh calved heifers from our regular vendors
trading between £1200 - £1700. Buyers selective and price very much
dependent on personal circumstances.
However Good News, as I write this article, we have received news from
the LAA that we are, from Monday 27th April able to resume our
commercial weekly dairy auctions once again. No dispersal sales or
breeding bull sales will be permitted but breeding sheep also will be
allowed, all under strict control as currently being managed by our
valiant team in the market.
Finally, let’s don’t forget all those staff and auctioneers who have
(despite personal risk) religiously turned out for work providing such great
service to all our clients and without whom the market would not
function.
Many thanks to all who support this fantastic live auction
system……………………we will get through it!
