TheStickleDeaeratingFeedwaterHeaterevolvedfromourfirstOpenCoilFeedwaterHeaterpatentedin1901.ThefirstgenerationofStickleFeedwaterHeaterswereemployedtocapturecalciuminboilerfeedwater.Itwaslaterlearnedthefeedwaterheaterservedthemoreimportantroleofoxygenandcarbondioxideremoval.TheextractionoftheseharmfulgasesistheprimaryfunctionofallStickleDeaerators.Removalofthesenon-condensablegasesfrommake-upwaterforboilerfeed,protectsboiler,condensatereturnlines,pipingandpumpsfromcorrosivegases.

THE FUNCTION TheStickleSprayTypeDeaeratorisdesignedtocompletelyremoveoxygenandcarbondioxidetotheacceptedlevelof“zero”.“Zero”isdefinedbytheindigocarminetestmethodassolubleoxygenisnottoexceed.005ccperlitreandsolublecarbondioxidetobevirtuallyzero.

THE OPERATIONTheStickleSprayTypeDeaeratoroperatesthroughatwostagedesign.

STAGE 1,thecoldwatermakeupandlowpressurereturnenterthedeaeratorthroughthesprayheadswhichareofapressureandflowcompensating,springloadedtype.Here,inthedirectcontactinternalventcondenser,thecoldwaterandlowpresssurereturnsarebrokendownforinitialheatinganddeaera-tion.Mostofthecorrosivegasesarereleasedatthisstageandareventedtoatmospherethroughtheautomaticairventvalve.

STAGE 2,asupplementalheatingandagitatingprocess,iswherethefinaldeaerationisaccomplished.DuringStage2thefinaldeaerationisprovidedbytheuseofaspringloadedsteamatomizer.ThehighvelocitysteamblaststhewatergravitatedfromStage1tothispoint.Remainingamountsofoxygenandcarbondioxidearereleased,andevacuated,againthroughtheautomaticairventvalve.Theautomaticairventvalveminimizestheamountofsteamthatescapesthevessel,butinsuresfullventingofallnon-condensablegases.
