Hi Newf Friends,
Just had to say that I am very happy to see so many of our members participating on so many levels in theevents that have been planned for this time of year. ”PARTY TIME”, that was just what it was!! A wonderful watertest at Lake Andrea in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin the weekend of September15th and 16th. The organizationstarted on Saturday with the early arrival of Andrea and Dave Z, Mary T, Dona B and Roger D who all workeddiligently to prepare the site by setting up all the tents and equipment. It wasn’t long before the first entrantsstarted to arrive along with many of our board members. Our board meeting was held from 1:30-3:00 p.m. followed by the obedience exercises. From the applause of the crowd anyone within hearing distance knew thatwe had many successes. The evening banquet provided a great chance for sharing time with new and old
friends. The meal was great, the general membership meeting went well(even though I was overwhelmed with the NCA President attending themeeting I was so nervous), and the icing on the cake was our auction andbrown bag raffle. MANY MANY thanks to all who donated items, participatedin the LIVELY bidding (Thanks Ted and Judy!!) It made our evening an over-all wonderful time. Dawn came really quickly and so did the arrival of all theentrants. The air was very crisp, and I hoped that everyone had broughtsome full wetsuits! The event ran smoothly with great organization fromRoger D. our chair. The volunteers were outstanding! Darlene R. and herfamily members were precise in their record keeping. We cannot thank youenough for your help. Without all the volunteers these events could not
come about. No matter in what capacity you volunteer, it makes a difference. Where else can you go to a watertest and have a “fully stocked kitchen” to have your dogs’ portrait taken? Great idea to kick off the sale of ourCOOK BOOK! Thank you Tara M, Wendy W, and her sister Denise for your artistic and photographic talents, andto the whole cookbook crew, you did an outstanding job as usual. Congratulations to all the entrants on yourdedication and hard work with your dogs. It was a sheer pleasure to watch the interaction. Many thanks to ourjudges. The results were as follows:

Show & Tell
Deuce, a 200-pound Newfoundland, welcomes visitors when
they come to Dancing Bear Resort on Balm Lake.
And now, he’s bringing in business, too.
A group of Newfoundland dog owners drove to Dancing Bear
last weekend with their seven dogs. They found the dog
friendly resort online and were quite taken with Deuce, who is
displayed prominently on the resort’s home page.
When the group contacted resort owners Steve and Kathy
Vitcak, they said, “This has to be destiny.”
While the humans have also enjoyed fishing this week, it was
a working weekend for the dogs, who practiced water rescues
off Dancing Bear’s sandy beach.
The seven dogs range from puppies to adult males and
females. They came, along with their owners, from Illinois.
“There’s not many dog-friendly resorts.” said Steve McAdams
of Green Valley, IL, “The Vitcaks were really happy we were
coming. They’re so pet-friendly.”
Another plus, McAdams said, is that Balm Lake has clear,
clean water.
“That’s the big deal,” he said, “Otherwise, the dogs may have
skin problems.”
On Wednesday the seven dogs – Maddie, Callie, Cambriol,
Cheers, Tyra, Willie and Mickey – each took turns “rescuing”
swimmers in trouble and retrieving items from the water,
including a full-sized fishing boat.
While all of the Newfoundlands are working dogs trained to
conduct water rescues, most are also show dogs. Cambriol’s
father is Josh, the Newfoundland who won Best in Show in
2004 at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Tyra, 2, was
named after Tyra Banks, a supermodel, and is also a show dog.
The dogs have been training this week about two-three hours a
day, Steve McAdams said.
All of the humans there were members of the Newfoundland
Club of America, and its smaller regional clubs, River King
and North Central, both of which operate out of Illinois.
The Newfoundlands were practicing for their upcoming tests
in which they will attempt to earn a specific level of water res-
cue. There are three levels; junior, senior and excellent.
“it’s hard to get time to get practicing in,” said Jean
McAdams, who owns Shadrack Newfoundland kennel along

with Steve McAdams. She said coming to Dancing Bear
worked well because the dogs were able to train – and the
Vitcaks were pleased to have them.
The “callers” were the men and women in the water hollering
for help or there to assist the dogs when needed.
In one exercise, Maddie, an 8-year-old female and grand-
mother to Callie, 9 months, was positioned in the fishing boat
and jumped out to help Jean McAdams, who was calling for
help. Maddie swam around Jean, offering the woman her tail.
Jean grabbed on, and Maddie took her to shore.
Steve McAdams said water rescuing is in Newfoundlands’
blood. They have webbed feet and double coat, like a duck,
he explained. Their coats also dry quickly.
“We train them once it’s warm enough to get in the water
until fall,” McAdams said.
In another exercise, three humans sit out in the water in their
life jackets. Just one of them shouts for help. The dog, then,
is expected to pick out the human in trouble and bring her a
life preserver, again offering its tail. Cheers, a 7-year-old
female, quickly found Vitcak splashing around and asking for
assistance.
In tandem, Tyra and Cheers took part in an exercise from the
edge of the dock. The caller tossed a “bumper,” a toy-like
floating device, into the water and the duo jumped in to
retrieve it.
The bumper, Vitcak explained, is the key to many of the
exercises. From the time a Newfoundland is a puppy, she is
trained to want the bumper. It’s used first as a toy, and then a
rope may be attached and she is trained to retrieve the
bumper and the rope.
This way, no matter where the bumper is – floating in the
water, attached to a boat, etc. – the dogs knows she needs to
retrieve it, Vitcak said.
But while the seven dogs spent Wednesday afternoon work-
ing on their skills, they also go to relax and splash around the
water.
“We go through the exercises and then let them run, swim –
have fun,” Steve McAdams said. “They play games and
compete.”
Jean McAdams performs awater rescue drill – “Take theLine” – with Cambriol, aNewfoundland dog, at DancingBear Resort Balm Lake onWednesday afternoon. The drillrequires a dog to bring out arope to a stranded boater andtow the boat safely to shore.Owners of seven Newfoundlanddogs are at the Dancing BearResort for a week of water res-cue training with the large dogs.

After this event, things began toROCK AND ROLL in preparation
for “Rolling at Rock Cut” Draft Test to be held on Sunday, October 14th. Oneweek prior to this, a seminar about drafting was conducted through the hardwork and efforts of Linda Larsen. Linda was assisted by Melissa Torres.Everyone who attended had a chance to participate in drafting at their ownlevel of experience. Nice comments were made about this opportunity.
On Saturday October 13th volunteers organized the site, and prepared thecourse. We tried hard to order good weather for Sunday, but it was not in the cards! It looked like a long WET day. Wewere joined by our Judges Ingrid Lyden and Barbara Jenness. Much to everyone’s surprise MANY club members, along with family and friends of entrants turned out to watch in spite of the weather conditions. With high hopes thatthe rain would stop, the exercises began. Much to our dismay the rain became heavier and stayed that way through-
out the obedience and maneuvering portions of the test. The freight haulpresented the biggest challenge with the terrain becoming very muddy, with many slick areas that were puddle filled. As I followed the entrants Iwas amazed at how well each team handled the adverse conditions. What a great accomplishment when we finally reached the clearing andthe freight haul was finished! Once again the volunteers were amazing. So many people need to work together to make these events successfulones. There was a lovely round of applause for our Chair Rick H. I wouldalso like to thank Linda L Co-Chair, and Tara M Test Secretary, for all the
behind the scenes organization and planning, Amy C. for putting together a great lunch for all, to the entire family ofDarlene R who devoted their time in keeping all the precise paperwork, Gerry H for a great job as chief ring steward,Tim C for his help as security officer, Bill and Carol T for providing the distraction on thefreight haul, the stewards John and Denita J, Judy H, Linda L, David, Rick H, and Sid R.To everyone who “weathered” this day your support was the warmest feature of the day!Congratulations to everyone who participated. I hope to see the continued interest in allour upcoming events. It is so nice that so many are attending, and to know that we allcan give support to our fellow Newfoundland owners. Please join us for Education Dayon December 2nd. All specifics are listed on the web site.

Saved By the Dog!In the wee hours of Sunday September 30th 2007 everyone in
our house, dog and human alike were fast asleep, well, all but
one that is. Laila our Newfoundland was standing watch; she
was apparently paying close attention to sounds and smells that
did not belong in our home.
It was 1:15 am when Laila, all 110 pounds of her, pounced on
me in the bed startling me awake with quite the thump to my
body. Even in the grogginess of sleep I knew something was
wrong. First of all, this behavior was far outside of Laila’s
modus’ operandi, second and third the hissing sound and smell of
gas was immediately alarming.
Lalia and I headed downstairs to investigate and quickly deemed
the situation beyond our areas of expertise and decided it was
necessary for everyone in the house, dog and human alike, to be
evacuated post haste.
Laila and her sister Newfoundland Corey were champs, they
evacuated in an orderly fashion with their Auntie Denise and
Momma and Papa in tow. Then for the next 5+ hours they were
secured to a neighbors tree as they watched firemen and gas
company workers go in and out of our house and dig up our yard
without ever barking or waking our neighbors. Although Denise and
I were sure they wanted to know why they were on leashes and not
having an adventure around the neighborhood by the light of the
moon.
It turns out that the connection from the main gas line into our house
had come lose and gas was spraying out of the line at 30psi. When
the firemen arrived within minutes of our evacuation the inside of
our house was a 10+ on the explosive meter. The team leader from
the gas company shared with us that a very similar situation earlier
in the week had lead to the house exploding and while the people
escaped the animals perished.
We were so clearly “saved by the
dog”. Laila will forever be our
hero; she truly saved not only the
day but perhaps our home and our
very lives.
Laila, now known as Wonder Dog
Laila, will be three years old
October 11th and her sister Corey
will be eight years old October
17th. Laila and Corey live with
Wendy Warden and David McArtin
and get to spend tons of fun times
with their Auntie Denise. Submitted by Wendy Warden

VN 101: An Interactive Introduction
to Versatile Newfoundlands
The NCA and NCNE will be introducing an exciting new
competition at the 2008 National in Rhode Island. The
Breeders’ Class is a new AKC “Special Attraction” offered
only at independent specialties to showcase successful
breeders. This class is unique in that the entry must be made
by the Breeder or Co-Breeder. The basis for the award in the awards in this class is the consistent superior quality of the
Breeder's entry - a unit of 4 dogs. NCNE is honored to present the NCA Inaugural Breeders' Class on Wednesday
following Sweepstakes judging. The judge for this event is Sylvia Hammarstrom. Ms. Hammarstrom is an AKC
Working Group judge who has bred more than 1000 Champions under the Skansen kennel prefix. In order to make this
new Breeder’s showcase as memorable as possible, we are soliciting donations to cover the expense of special trophies,
rosettes, exhibitor mementos, ring favors, etc. Everyone who donates to this fund will be listed in the Catalog. Each $50
donation will also be a chance to win a 24” x 14” wood sign with an original Newfoundland painting by Anne Parsons.
The Breeders Class offers a unique opportunity for you to showcase your breeding program. The rules of entry are
simple: You, the breeder or co-breeder of record, enter 4 dogs as a Unit. You need not own any of the dogs, nor must
you handle any of the dogs. Each dogs must have its own handler in the ring, and you must agree to be present at the
completion to receive any award received (1st through 4th place will be awarded). Members of the NCA Breeders
Education Committee will be providing the 1st-place trophy.
Below is the Donation Form. Please help us put on an outstanding event by contributing to the expense fund. The more
money we collect before the end of the year, the better the trophies, ring favors, exhibitor mementos and maybe even
ring-side hors d’œuvre we can provide!
If you have any questions about the competition or the entry form, just ask! And please send in your donation as soon
as possible.
Thanks for your support!

NCNC’s 22nd annual Draft Test was held October 14th at Rock Cut State Park.Judges for the day were Barbara Jenness and Ingrid Leyden. Although the weatherforecast said slight chance of rain, it started out as a miserable day for the handlerswith rain showers. As the day progressed, theshowers became heavier at times and the
temperatures didn’t rise. It’s hard to concentrate on hitching and harnessingwith cold and wet fingers! Despite that, the entrants, judges and stewardsprevailed. After all, in the tradition of working dogs and handlers throughouthistory, they had to work despite adverse weather conditions.
We had ten entrants which was higher than last year. However by Sundaythree of the entries had pulled from the test for various reasons. The final liston Sunday was one team and six singles. Barb and Ingrid gave basic instructions on what they expected beforeeach exercise and were fair and consistent with all entrants. For those who are unfamiliar with what a Draft testentails, the exercises are broken out into five sections: basic control, harnessing and hitching, maneuveringcourse, loading the weight for the freight haul and hitching with an out of sight stay and the one mile freighthaul itself. The exercises are a joint effort and all of them performed off lead. Therefore the handler must havecontrol of their dog through verbal commands only during the entire test. The only time they are allowed totouch is during hitching and unhitching and between exercises. It’s fun to watch how the handler and theirdogs interacted throughout the test. In order to receive any Draft Dog title, all exercises must be passed at asingle test. More information can be found at the NCA web site, www.newfdogclub.org under the Water andDraft Work link.
The freight haul starts off on the grass and continues across the road (stopping traffic briefly in the park),through a quite hilly trail in the park. Because of the amount of rain which had fallen by the time the freighthaul began, the trail was muddy but safe. The handlers did a nice job of keeping their dogs under control.Congratulations to these new title holders and to those entrants who earned their first title!

One other big thank you goes out to all who pitched in and helped as stewards.Without your help, we wouldn’t be able to do the exercises and complete our test. Our appreciation and thanks to the judges, entrants, stewards, and spectators. There was a nice turn out of spectators, made up of new members, regulars, visitors. Remember, carting is a fun team building exercise between you and yourdog and once you have a harness and cart, you can practice anywhere!
