Sample Recreational UsesOne way to experience the Raquette River is to take advantage of Brookfield Power’s facilities from the Carry Falls Dam down to South Colton. Starting from location 3 on the map, you can make use of the boat launch and portage area around the dam (approximately 600 feet long). Fishing and hunting access is also available from this area. Alternatively, you may decide to simply stay in this one area and enjoy the day use area. Similarly, the Stark Hydroelectric Facilities (map location 4) offers picnic facilities and fishing access. Directional and access signs are provided along the 0.75 mile portage. Campers will be pleased to find that 70 campsites are available at the McNeil Campsite (map location 6), with ADA accessibility, restrooms, and showers. There’s also a supervised swimming beach, boat launch, fishing, and picnic facilities. Blake, Rainbow Falls, and Five Falls reservoirs offer some of the most scenic portions of Brookfield Power’s route. Here one can experience quiet shorelines interrupted by sightings of beaver, deer, loon, kingfisher, or perhaps even bald eagle. This nature-rich area features a rich variety of conifers and deciduous trees along forested shores. A trek from the Carry Falls reservoir (map location 3) to the South Colton site might take as much as two days, figuring in time for portage and carry. For the sake of convenience, your party might want to have a vehicle (or drop-off and pick-up) available at each end of the journey.
12. Higley Flow Picnic Area and Boat Launch - Big Rock Park and boat launch. Concrete boat ramp, parking, canoe portage (less than 1/3 mile), fishing access, and picnic facilities.
13. Colton Portage - 3.5 miles along Pipeline Road with rest areas. Stone Valley Trail parallels the river reach on each side.
14. Scenic Overlook and Portage - Roadside parking and picnic facilities. Portage approximately 1.5 miles to canoe access area. Southern terminus of Red Sandstone Trail near scenic overlook.
15. Sugar Island Day-Use Area - Area located on Sugar Island features canoe access, picnic facilities, fishing access, and hiking trails. Day use parking at P15 (northern terminus of Red Sandstone Trail).
16. Norwood Boat Launch - Concrete launch, parking, ADA-accessible fishing platform, and picnic facilities. Canoe access and portage (approximately 1/3 mile).
17. Yaleville Hydroelectric Facility - Canoe access and portage (approximately 1/10 mile) and picnic facilities.
18. East Norfork Canoe Portage - Over 1 mile from the East Norfolk impoundment, to the Norfolk access location. South end of portage provides fishing access and parking. Access signs and directional signs.
19. Raymondville Cartop Boat Launch - Fishing access, parking and picnic areas. There is a short carry (less than 500 feet) around the Raymondville Dam to the canoe access area.
Amenities and ActivitiesWhat’s your pleasure? Canoeing. Fishing. Hiking. Hunting. Camping. Bird watching. Picnicking. These recreational activities and more are available to you as you experience the splendor of one of the Adirondacks’ finest waterway corridors. Take a journey down the Raquette River and discover the pleasures of wilderness exploration. Your trek can be as brief as several hours or as long as several days. To make your journey safe, enjoyable, and convenient, multiple resources and amenities are available to you along Brookfield Power’s Raquette River canoe route and recreation corridor. Brookfield Power facilitates your enjoyment of these recreational resources by providing:
Fascinating Facts• According to some legends, the Raquette River
derives its name from the French word for “snowshoe.” Some consider the mouth of the river to resemble the shape of a snowshoe. Others point to English transformations of Indian names for “swift” or “noisy.”
• The Raquette River is approximately 170 miles long and is the second-longest river in New York State, exceeded only by the Hudson River.
• The area is rich in history, dating back to escapes to Canada during the Revolutionary War and frequent travel in the mid-1800s.
• Traveling from Blue Mountain Lake all the way to the St. Lawrence River, the elevation gradient along the Raquette River changes 1,512 feet, from 1,662 feet above mean sea level at Blue Mountain Lake to 150 feet above mean sea level at the mouth of the river.
Tips and Guidelines• Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket or other
personal flotation device for water activities. • Observe signs and barriers along the route – stay
clear of dams and intakes and other restricted areas near hydro plants.
• Pack a first aid kit, compass, flashlight, matches, and map.
• Before departing, notify others of your plans.• Please pick up litter and pack-out your trash.• Disturbing wildlife, picking wild flowers, defacing
trees, and cutting standing vegetation is prohibited.
• Feel free to fish along the route.• Please respect the rights of private landowners
and use only designated portage routes.• FOR YOUR SAFETY, AVOID AREAS SUCH AS
DAMS, INTAKE STRUCTURES, GATES, WATER CONVEYANCE STRUCTURES, POWERHOUSES AND SUBSTATIONS.
