What is happening in 2014 and 2015 at St Mary’s for current Year 10s?

Over two years (Year 11 and Year 12), students can study 4 units of a course, generally moving from one

stage to the next,

but there are instances where 4 units are studied at the same Stage

Stage 3 external examinations are compulsory

From 2015, Stage 2 examinations will be optional (SCSA), but at St Mary’s we will expect

students enrolled in a Stage 2 course to sit internal and external examinations, unless they

Community Service

Although not required for graduation (WACE), St Mary’s requires all students to complete 20 hours of community service

a small part of this will be organised through the school; the remainder by

students and parents

all of it needs to meet school requirements and to be verified through the school

External Assessment

External examinations

All pairs of Stage 2 and Stage 3 units taken in

Year 12 have external examinations (called WACE

examinations)

Units taken in Stage 1 are wholly school assessed

For university entrance, results from 4 courses

are combined to produce a Tertiary Entrance

Aggregate (TEA)

Generally, Stage 3 courses are required for university

entrance

Students going to university would generally do at

least four Stage 2 courses in Year 11 and four Stage

3 courses in Year 12

There will be external exams for Stage 2 and Stage 3 paired units

Stage 3 units will be given a 15 mark advantage

compared to Stage 2 units (different adjustment for

Maths courses)

Students can apply for university entrance with a combination of Stage 2 and Stage 3 courses

Students wanting a Tertiary Entrance Rank will use scores from their best four courses

(it could be that a good result in Stage 2 is higher, even after scaling, than a result in a Stage 3 course)

WACE External assessment

Exams are 2.5 or 3 hours duration plus reading time

Courses may have a performance type component

Dance, Drama, Music, Phys Ed, Languages

a Folio or a Production requirement

Visual Arts, Materials Design and Media Production

Australian Tertiary Admission

Ranking (ATAR) • Previously TER

• 4 best final scaled scores are added (TEA, out of 400)

• All students ranked according to their TEA

• Top 15 students given ATAR of 99.95

• ATAR ranges between 99.95 and zero

• reports the rank position relative to all other students

• It takes into account the number of students who sit WACE exams in any year and also the number of people of Year 12 school leaving age in the total population

• an ATAR of 70.00 indicates that you are equal to or better than 70% of the Year 12 school leaver age population

How do I calculate an ATAR in 2015?

Best four subject average 85 + 72 + 62 + 58 = 277 (out of 400) (no need to count English result, but it does need to be over 50)

TAFE entry

TAFE Courses have both entry requirements

and selection criteria

Entry Requirements are needed for all courses

Selection Criteria are applied only to competitive courses:

those courses where there are more applicants than places

Selection Criteria determine which eligible applicants

will be offered a place

TAFE Entry Students will gain points (maximum 100)

towards selection criteria through:

– Secondary Education/Skill Development (42 points max)

• Best three subjects (including English)

• Based on grades; higher points for higher stages

• Some courses require a portfolio

– Qualification pathway (29 points max)

• Certificate qualifications, more points if relevant area

– Workplace experience and Employment (29 points max)

• Part time/volunteer work

• School work experience and workbased learning

• VET and general work experience

Subject Selection Process

Discussion questions

1. What are my main options after school?

2. What career/studies am I thinking of following?

3. What do I need to get there?

Consider – *abilities *academic achievements *interests *understanding of each subject on offer

Subject Selection Process

Gathering Information

• Career Voyage

• Centrelink Career Information Centre

• Job Guide

• Career Expos

• Information on St Mary’s courses (Current teachers, Course Expo in Year 10 Week, Year 11 and 12 Course Handbook)

Subject Selection Process

Gathering Information

• Information on University and TAFE courses and requirements

(Year 10 Week, Uni Open days, TISC)

• Talk to current teachers and counsellors

• Year 10 Parent Teacher Meeting 25 July

(bring your Course Handbook and Subject Selection Form with you)

• CareerLink Information Night 5 August

University Entry

Requirements:

• West Australian Certificate of Education

• Competence in English, as designated by university concerned – scaled mark of at least 50 in English, English Literature or EALD (Stage 2 or Stage 3)

• A Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) sufficiently high for the particular course

• Prerequisite subjects (scaled mark of at least 50)

Subject Selection Process

Step 1

What are your plans?

- Work

- TAFE

- University

Subject Selection Process

Step 2

Be sure you understand what

competence in English and

requirements for WACE mean

- Check the Year 11/12 Course Selection

Handbook

Subject Selection Process

Step 3

Calculate a points score

- Increase in workload from Year 10 to Year

11

- A guide to help you decide the load of

subjects you choose at each stage

- Use Semester 1 results as an indicator

Subject Selection Process

Step 4

Stage 1 or Stage 2/3 – how many of

each?

- Decide on the number of subjects to take

at Stage 1 and Stage 2/3 levels (as

recommended by your points score)

eg. Between 18 and 24 points consider

five Stage 2, one Stage 1 course

Subject Selection Process

Step 5

Guidelines to subject choice

- Choose a programme that leads to success rather than failure. Select courses on the basis of those in which you have the background to achieve success.

- A programme that is too difficult or does not cater for interests leads to loss of motivation, self-esteem and confidence.

Subject Selection Process

Step 5 (cont.)

- Teacher advice and minimum levels of achievement outlined in handbook are important.

- Multiple entry paths are available for university and TAFE. Decisions made in Years 10 and 11 do not necessarily lock students into a certain pathway.

- Read pages 4 – 23 of the Course

Selection Handbook carefully.

Subject Selection Process

Step 6

Checklist

- Have you read the Course Handbook?

- Have you thought about a List A and a List

B subject?

- Have you discussed the Handbook and

questionnaire with your parents?

Subject Selection Process

Step 7

Complete Subject Selection Form

- Check the list of courses on pages 6 and 7

of the blue Course Handbook. Tick off

those you like, are interested in and do

well in.

- Remember TAFE and University entry

requirements, as relevant.

Subject Selection Process

Step 7 (cont.)

7.1 See your current teachers for advice on

what subjects and stages might best suit

you. Have them complete Section 1 on

the Subject Selection Form.

When you have done this, you are ready

to make your final selections.

Subject Selection Process

Step 7 (cont.)

7.2 Enter your final subject choices and

have teachers and parents sign their

approval, taking note of any comments

that have been made.

Remember:

- English course

- One List A and one List B subject

Please note:

• Carefully consider all advice given.

• It is not easy to change courses once the year

has commenced.

• Changes are subject to timetable constraints. All

missed work in new subjects must be caught up.

• The deadline for subject changes is MID

MARCH.

FINALLY -

Hand your Subject Selection Form in to

your Link teacher, Mr Thompson, Ms

Herron or Mrs Haak

on or before

8 August 2014
