African Treasure
Member: Kerry Britton
"A good solution to the difficult problem of how to use those large-scale African treasures....but I had to get artistic, so it took three days to make this small example of what you can do with those 2' batting strips. Still - I like it a lot, so I'm glad I did it."

"In 2004, forced to sit still after an operation, I started this colour study project from 'Quilts from Europe', by Gul Laporte. Finally, in 2019, I finished it. It is supposed to have repetitive appliques on each block but I like the movement of the colours. "

"The pattern for this quilt is from the book. 'Material Obsession Two,' by Kathy Doughty and Sarah Fielke. It was a great hand project, with each hexagonal block made up of 72 little kite-shaped pieces. I'd like to say it was a great stash buster, but we all know how that works. "

"Twelve quilters in the Fairfax Chapter Embellishment Bee did a round robin. Each did her own starting piece and any finishing work at the end. In between, the piece was passed to others for ‘Embellishment,’ with much secrecy. Each piece held its own challenges, and the results were totally unanticipated. The label lists the participants."

"I won many of the nine-patch blocks at our chapter auction, years ago, I had the four center blocks that I purchased from an antique dealer, and I had made three of the inked corner blocks in a class. Finally it was time to put all these components together into something. My friend Dian had the perfect dark chocolate fabric for the flange."

"I made the eight center kaleidoscope blocks almost 30 years ago. They sat, waiting to go in a project worthy enough. I had to put this on my Arlington Chapter Finishing School list to force myself to get to work. Its number was drawn and I was forced to “just do it!” Each step was another assignment in Finishing School, for which I am grateful!"

"This pattern was in a Dececmber, 2017 magazine. I thought, “Oh easy! It’s just squares.” But there were so very many squares!! I stopped to count them. Including the borders, there are more than 2,000 pieces. I asked my friends, “Who takes the time to count up all the pieces before they start??” One said, “I do.” Huh. Who knew?"

"I love to make scrappy batik quilts and usually start by choosing a color scheme. After the QU show, this quilt will be donated to Arlington, Virginia-based Bridges to Independence, which leads people out of homelessness and into stable, independent futures. This Quilt Is.....Another Priceless Worthless Object
Member: Robin Tilsworth
"Quilt history expert Mary Fons describes quilts as ‘priceless worthless objects’ when the value is due to their origin or history, not strictly any artistic considerations. The description also resonates with the truism that quilts are often undervalued. Rarely does a quilt price reflect actual costs, especially labor, involved in quilt creation."
