We pray to the Lord
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 17 & 18, 2015
Isaiah 53:10-11 If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall see his
Descendants in a long life.
Psalm 33 “Lord, let you mercy be on us as we place our trust in you.”
Hebrews 4:14-16 Let us confidently approach the throne of grace.
Mark 10:35-45 or 10:42-45 The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many.
The disciples in Mark’s Gospel still don’t seem to get it! Now James and John are asking for favors from Jesus, instead of
asking what more they can do. Jesus’ response makes it clear that a true disciple follows Jesus in every way, including giving
oneself over to serving others. Whoever would be great must be the servant of all. Listening to these words today, let us give
thanks to God for the great gift of Jesus Christ, and pray for the grace to become more like him.
30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 24 & 25, 2015

Psalm 126

Mark 10:46-52

I’ve hit the mid-point of life (yikes!) and I admit I still dream
of glory. Instead of dreaming of being rich and driving a
BMW, I now dream of writing a spiritual book that becomes a
best-seller. I dream of more parishes running my bulletin in-
serts and of parishes using my ideas of evangelization. I am
James in today’s Gospel. I am John
But I am not alone. Specific details aside, every Christian
struggles with aspiration. Indeed, we should struggle - for we
are called to be holy - we are call to be saints! This means we
cannot help but cycle between desiring worldly honors to par-
ticipating in graced moments of selflessness and love. Then,
before we know it, we become proud of grace - gloating in-
wardly over how we are better than others.
This is our struggle - to follow Jesus to yearn to follow Jesus
ever more closely, but to not succumb to false pride over how
closely we currently are following Jesus. We cannot dismiss
James or John as being arrogant. Jesus did not react this way.
Besides, they became saints! Would that I could be like
James. Or John!

Q & As in the parish bulletin each week. For a copy of all
the Q & As, please contact Laurie Munoz at the Parish
Office, 455-3012
1. If you are not comfortable in the body God gave you
(e.g. transgender individuals), is that a mortal sin?
Is making medical changes to your body a mortal sin
( e.g. Bruce Jenner)? We need to ask, in what I choose
can I be faithful to God? To be uncomfortable, to have
doubts, is not a sin. You must, however, strive to live in
God’s way and accept who God has made you to be.
We can say that having a medical procedure to change
your gender is objectively wrong, since it is not
respectful of the creation of God. But only God is to
judge if it is a mortal sin, because the person has to it is
Gravely wrong and freely choose to do it anyway.
Sometimes there is confusion. God wants us to take up
Our crosses with him; struggle with him. One of the
plagues of our culture is that people are thinking they
are God; but only GOD is GOD. Only the true God can
hold us together, otherwise we disintegrate. But you
really cannot change overnight. We don’t condemn
Bruce Jenner, but who know if Bruce Jenner is living a
better life after altering himself. Sometimes “the grass
is greener on the other side” until we actually get to the
other side. God made us in His image and we reverence
God by respecting ourselves as he created us. If you
are struggling with finding who you are, you need to
face the issues and find someone to talk to who can
help. A major challenge is our culture today is what I c
call “egothesim.” According to this philosophy I
consider myself God and decide when I live or when I
die; what gender I will be, etc. I am the last word. But
if we are all gods, we will disintegrate, because there is
nothing beyond us that can hold us together.
2. What is the Church’s stance/opinion on how to deal
win GMOs (genetically modified organisms)? Nature always will win. The Church does not have a
stance on this particular issue, rather the Church has
principles and morals that guide us. Science can
advance and enable us to produce more food or
healthier food, but long term effects must be looked at
thoroughly. .To make things artificially like and
antibiotic, can be good. But it could also create an
immunity in the body to the natural substance thus
creating more harm to the people than good; and being
detrimental. GMO has its place, but we should be
cautious about it
