• Horizontal drilling evolved into multilateral drilling (1991) • Reservoir exposure per well increased • Still recovery factor remained low (5-7%OOIP) • So in 1995 CS Resources initiated first polymer pilot

Lessons from pilot • Good history match obtained by reducing
water relative permeability and introducing skin in wells
• Conclusions: • polymer viscosity does not need to be as high as
initially thought • Operational issues caused failure • Concept still valid

Conclusions • Applying right technology has made a huge
difference in Pelican Lake • Polymer flood of viscous oil is possible and proven • Recovery increased to over 30%OOIP in high
viscosity oil (<2,500cp) • Another technology is required to get to the next
level
