PROPERTIES OF MATTER5.2

PROPERTIES OF MATTER•Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space• You can compare matter based on the properties of state, color, texture, temperature, mass, and volume

STATE• States of Matter: solid, liquid, gas, and

plasma

• The way particles are arranged is what makes a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma

SOLIDS

• Solid: The particles are packed together tightly and do not move around• Solids take up a certain amount of space

LIQUIDS • Liquids: Particles have

movement and slide around to take shape of their container

GASES• Gases: No definite shape or

volume and particles are moving fast!

PLASMAS• Plasmas: A lot like gases but

you don’t find them too often walking around. It takes a very special environment to keep plasmas going

COLOR AND TEXTURE• Solids, liquids, and gases may

all have color

• Solids and liquids can have texture

liquid gold

TEMPERATURE• Temperature is a

measure of how hot or cold an object is

• Scientists measure temperature with thermometers and different scales– Fahrenheit is most often

used in the United States

– Celsius is used by scientists all around the world
