THE END OF THE END OF THE JOURNEY
“If the business of business in business is business then business should continue to do business in business” Anonymous.
BISHOP SIR REV. FREEMANTLE, PRESIDENT OF THIS CONVENTION REV. MAZALENI, EX- PRESIDENT REV
MAPU, CIRCUIT SUPERINTENDET OF ALEXANDRIA CIRCUIT REV. MPOFU, CIRCUIT SUPERINTENDENTS, CIRCUIT
PRESIDENTS, EVANGELISTS, OFFICIALS AND DELEGATES OF THIS 2017 CONVENTION:
I here stand in this 80th Convention since the formation of YMG in our District. I stand for the last time as District Secretary of
the Grahamstown to present the 79th Annual report to this Convention for the period 01 January 2017 to 31 December 2017.
I must again as I said last year, I am grateful and should I repeat I am grateful of your support with prayers.
God of the Methodist Church and my family helped me through trying and jubilant times. We meet at the time many things
have happen between the time we met at Motherwell and today. Allow to mention but few:
ANC conference that led to the change of the state President
Resolutions on land issue
The sad commission of life Esidimeni saga
The shootings at Engcobo with five policemen dying in the hands of hard hearted criminals.
These are few amongst many things that had happened. All these things they possess signals to end of times. But President
these were things that were affecting us indirectly but I cannot not remind this convention the Pretoria Central Mission saga
by one of our own.
We meet here on the 15th after last convention hosted here. This is where our current Bishop was nominated and elected
and President of this organisation whom today inducts this new executive.
We meet when the country’s economy is not pro poor at all. The 1% VAT increase, the introduction of carbon emissions tax,
increase on fuel levy, etc contribute on the least received by the poor.

#Healing Wounds, Restoring Human Dignity Through Mission
Our report has tried to reflect on the past three years and further past six years we have been in office. We can say without
fear of neither doubt nor contradiction that enormous improvement through innovation has been achieved. This convention
has supported us and achievements herein referred to were not by our wisdom but was by your wisdom.
As the country faces these challenges the YMG has also its own challenges. Amongst them are:
the consistent decline of numbers from our circuits
Consistent reluctance and resoluteness not to rise on to the occasion as expected by the President by few circuits
sadly led by people who are also members of this organization
Loss of District committee and senior members and in this period to mention but few:
Passing away of the former:
Vice President Alexandria Circuit Bro. Khayi
Vice President Keiskammahoek Circuit Bro. Maki
Bro Menemene
Bro. Meke
However, there are moments that brought us jubilation within the organizations:
Reaching 106 years of existence and 80 years of District existence
We again congratulate Rev. JB Freemantle on His assumption of duty in the highest
office of the District.
Appointment of the previous Motherwell circuit Superintendent as Clarkbury District
Bishop, Rev Noqayi.
We welcome our new Ministers and new convention attendees to this 80th Grahamstown YMG Convention, we hope you will
find it valuable to be part of this District. We pray God almighty to help you and your families during your time of ministry in
our District. Be assured you have our support and we wish you a happy stay here. The President still appeal to you to pay
attention to our YMG dates. We request your good offices to defend these dates in your quarterly meetings during
submission and finalisation of circuit year plans.
This is an induction convention, let us continue to pray and ask for God’s guidance without ceasing as we usher in the new
executive into office.
As your Secretariat, we thank and appreciate the efforts put by circuit secretaries under the guidance of circuit Presidents.
We note with dismay the consistence of those circuits that did not submit last year and we reject their consistence with
contempt of the highest order.
4.2 Submission of Reports
Report submission is consistent; some circuits are still resolute not to submit the reports to the President and convention.
What is disturbing most is that they consistently continue not to submit. Equally, it is sad that the circuits that have not
submitted are those circuits that did not submit even last year and year before last.
The standard of reporting has improved and an enormous improvement has been noted. We hope that circuits will continue
to improve despite the format as long as the content will be delivered. I wish to note that as secretaries we don’t report detail
in the content but context of the detail in the content.
I must personally say your journey with me was worth the effort taken. Allow me to stress this statement again because its
very important.
Circuits that submit have their report submitted despite having gone through the process of leaving the circuit. These
amongst other things include: discussing the report with society executives. After that those reports from societies
are to be discussed with the circuit executive and then be presented to the circuit general meeting for adoption. It
4 | P a g e Celebrating 80 years
#Healing Wounds, Restoring Human Dignity Through Mission
is only after this stage that the report should be tabled to the quarterly meeting of the circuit to be signed by the
Superintendent so that it can be sent to the President to District Secretary.
It is worth mentioning that this is the third year in our six year of term of office and our last year. We have agreed that this
format and comments below will consistently appear till people understand and appreciate the value of these contents
The report is divided into11 categories broken down into percentages as follows:
Evangelism 25%, Deepening Spirituality 10%, Development and Economic Empowerment 10 %, Justice, Service and
Reconciliation 10%, Christian Formation and Education 5%, Previous Convention 5%, Way forward and Resolutions 15%,
National Issues 5%, Methodist Family 5%, Ecumenical Affairs 5%, Statistics 5%
Following this model has faced unintentional resistance. The reality of the matter is, you cannot follow this format if you have
not devoted enough time to report writing as this is quite demanding. Still to date, statistics are not well presented.
4.2.1 Evangelism and Church Growth
Over the past six years the district did not have any significant growth rate. The reality is behind what we see. Most of the
new members are our youth which is not employed. Their coming in is the same as not coming in. This make it so hard for
them to keep their membership and outcome is the slow growth which is displayed to us.
Our deceased members range between 95 – 105 over the past two terms. President we wish again to draw to the attention
of this convention, the connection is strict on numbers and that necessitated the executive to tighten up all loose ends.
Evangelism methods need to be revisited as the demographics of the district consistently change. The youth that enters the
YMG door needs to be retained and we appeal to all circuits for a need to be innovative and bring in new strategies to make
YMG vibrant and interesting.
4.2.2 Deepening Spirituality
Grahamstown YMG over time has grown in its spiritual maturity. This is evidenced by level of discipline, moral teachings,
and prayer meetings that lead all people to the Kingdom of God. The servanthood, humility and efforts to display the

commitment to the call of God improve year by year throughout the district. We still encourage the circuits to rethink
innovative ways to deepen spirituality and growing our faith. Bible studies and group prayers remain the main source to
propel our Manyano forward. Spiritual mentorship is given to this convention as homework and an option to be explored.
4.2.3 Development and Economic Empowerment
For any organisation to grow and prosper development must be central. This is normally done at two levels ie training and
development. No organisation will ever grow to the desired level if it does not invest in its human capital. Though we have
noted attempts to achieve these, the impact remain little.
Debates can only improve when people understand the content and the context in which there are expected to deliberate
on. This can be done through availability of information and material to read. We note the same faces at conventions and
same faces during discussions at the floor of convention. We advise that more new faces should be introduced by circuits to
give new idea and views to floor of convention.
4.2.4 Justice, Service and Reconciliation
President and convention allow me to say without this pillar there is no YMG. Our call remains firm as this organisation “NOT
IN OUR NAME”. We are clear of zero tolerance to crime, women and child abuse, corruption at our work places, killing of
police whilst on duty, etc. We condemn HELICOPTER FATHERS a new approach towards fathering of children. This is
what makes our children to grow in our absence in our presence.
I must say this will never be achieved unless we start with ourselves. The change we want to see should start with me. We
cannot be man that revolt against manhood.
4.2.5 Christian Formation and Education
The key remains education hence all our energies are concentrated on education. The Baqwa event remains the main drive
while the Mazana event remains the main fundraising drive of the year. The spirit of commitment to these two events is
motivating despite the non-participation in some other circuits.
Let us prepare ourselves for the District bursary fund. This means we should prepare ourselves for an increase on our
assessments. I appeal we lead by examples despite the limitation due to our numbers.
Low pass rate in our District despite the biggest budget channelled to this department remain a worrying factor. Lets go back
and as much as we can open our churches for at least two hours over weekends and contribute in tutoring our high school
learners.
4.3 Convention 2017
We were at the metro circuit I should say. Thank you Motherwell circuit and its leadership. Again the credit goes to the circuit
leadership and the entire LOC under the Superintendence of Rev. Noqayi who subsequently left the District, we wish Him all
the best in His new assignment.
It is with great pride to report that the wish of the previous conventions has been realised. This is distributing food parcels
during convention period. Few blankets have been received we request Secretaries to encourage DDSRs on this matter.
Slight improvement is hereby acknowledged on the start time of convention.
Both invited speakers gave us clear picture on governments thinking on church. It is our responsibility to position ourselves
and assist on governments programme.
6 | P a g e Celebrating 80 years
#Healing Wounds, Restoring Human Dignity Through Mission
The long march to the magistrate offices certainly without doubt drew attention of the Motherwell community at large. The
impact may not be felt now but in future we hope for positive results.
Lastly, this was an elective convention and election outcomes were as follows:

4.4 Ecumenical Affairs
We call upon on innovative ways to do more on this item. We accept that this is our wish that we can transcend and improve
this call so that continuous sharing of good news is not seasonal. It is our wish that our attitude and understanding on these
matters should be beyond just sharing the word. It should go to a stage of sharing ways of overcoming challenges we face
in our communities. How we respond to our pain and the pain of the world. These include the different approaches other
denominations use to deal with issues of injustice, crime, etc.
We cannot afford to be apart when these matters unite against us.
4.5 Methodist Family Involvement
Inclusion of District Executive by circuits in some of their activities is noted though at a minimal level. It is warm heartening to
say the majority of our circuits are led by members of this organisation both superintendents and circuits stewards up to
organisational executives. We are proud to report that this organisation has produced two Bishops for our District and the
Clarkbury. We again plead that circuits should encourage their manyanos to support our Saturday Presidential Public
Address. Having said that the Saturday Presidential Public Address should would start when we support and commit in
having it
4.6 Financial Status
We should congratulate our Treasurer on His aggressive approach to financial management. This was not an easy exercise
to do as he has been operating with a shoe string tight budget. This approach made and allowed us to see us back at work
place though we are under the doctor’s sharp eye.
We applaud everyone who with their efforts made it a point that we realize our 105 Galla Dinner plans. This was amongst
other things with regards to the aims of the Galla Dinner to increase the district purse. I must thank the Treasure for the
efforts made in making sure that all the events and activities of the District were made and attended despite the negative
budget He operated under. This went along with the support within the executive and the broader YMG family.
7 | P a g e Celebrating 80 years
#Healing Wounds, Restoring Human Dignity Through Mission
We still call upon on circuits to submit their financials as this is the requirement by the connection. We applaud the pre
deposit of registration funds while we encourage those circuits that still bring money to convention for registration.
The opinion by the auditors as warm heartening and humbling. Indeed our finances have been in good hands. The
consistent outcomes on good audit and to be amongst few Districts that are audited in the connection affirm the latter.
We still call upon on for the philanthropic approach. This and investment attitude are possible solutions that will take us out
of this situation.
4.7 National issues
Our church has its autonomy but that autonomy is exercised within the community. Little is reported on how circuits impact
our communities on national issues and observing special days in the national calendar.
It is within the church spirit that, positive countries ideas should be supported at all times while we expose and discourage
the negatives. This refers to how we handle constitutional matters at our homes, workplace, sporting activities, etc. This is a
call to all of us to do good at all times.
4.8 Statistics
Critical to growth and sustenance of our organization is our reflection to the numbers that keep the organization forward.
Statistically the YMG, in the Grahamstown District, is constituted by old members, in terms of age, and the young members
are not coming to join our ranks in number to ensure long life to the organization, which threatens the future of our
organization. It is therefore imperative to take up the task and delve in more detail the cause of this negative phenomenon,
which is one of the reasons that we request members circuits to assist the District Secretariat by submitting to the District
Executive request, to be provided with the membership data information on each member circuit membership composition.
The following member circuits have heeded this call; to provide us with the names of their members in both categories of
members (1) in good standing (2) not in good standing:
(a) Annshaw circuit 233
(b) Healdtown circuit 230
(c) Newtondale circuit 240

With the much anticipated outcome on the demarcation of the Districts in the Connexion the analysis of our statistics
becomes pivotal. The demarcation process may mark the demise to the existence of the YMG Grahamstown District or the
opposite may also be a positive attribute to the demarcation process.
4.9 Way forward and Resolutions
This part of our District Secretary report is to outline the roadmap, as proposed by the incoming secretariat. The roadmap
includes the sustainance of the achievements and gains of our YMG movement and the goals our outgoing District
Executive have put us thus far. Secondly to pursue the advancement of our District President’s vision in particular and the
mission of our department in the Grahamstown District. We shall also strive to forge synergies, as a way of sustained
continuity, between the Ex-President’s vision over the two terms of his tenure and that of the newly inducted District
President’s vision to harmonise the obvious transition period.
We must also look into our organization’s development given the advent of so many advancements in our church, the
MCSA, the environment within which our Organization exist in order to create the necessary and much needed growth of the
Young Men’s Guild within our constituent Member Circuits. A more detailed data profile, as provided in this report, is a
starting point of debate in this Convention on how to grow our Organization. Other developments must focus on the inward
driven beneficiation, through a target mission plan and a program in order to make our constituent Member Circuits taking
ownership of their own lives’ destinies.
As the secretariat we put forward to this convention a challenge to start focusing on the social ills facing our communities,
where our department, as part of the MCSA church movement, exists and start to plan to do something concrete about
those social ills. If we are a church department charged with a responsibility to call on people who are said to be far from the
Grace of God it becomes our primary responsibility to participate in the various social programs that seek to threaten our
department from achieving this primary task as this is often occasioned by these social ills;
a. Economic and financial depression
b. The issue of cultural degradation
c. Single parenthood
d. Alcohol & drug abuse
Lastly, we propose to create a work manual, with a sole view of managing our activities in a standardised approach, from
one District Convention to the next. The manual will be printed for each Member Circuit for their use as we communicate
with them from time-to-time. This will alleviate confusion among our Member Circuit in terms of what is expected from them
by the District Executive from one Convention to the next Convention. In the process of streamling our activities in a
coordinated manner, together with the District Treasurer and the Distrcit DDSR, our 2018 July meeting in Humansdorp
circuit 214 must take a form of a workshop, with a comprehensive program that will focus squarely on the issues of
developing our organization. Allow me to suggest a few topical issues to form part of the meeting’s agenda;
i. Celebrating and recognising new entrants (confirmed members) into our Manyano
ii. A Standard training program for the on-trials
iii. Convention visitors – each circuit be assessed proportionally
iv. Recognition of member circuits according to their performances in each portfolio
9 | P a g e Celebrating 80 years
#Healing Wounds, Restoring Human Dignity Through Mission
v. Constitutional matters of the YMG
It is to be noted that this proposed 2018 July meeting and its agenda is not to constitute another Distrcit Convention but to
provide Member Circuits and the Dixtrict Executive Committee more time to fine tune pertinent issues that are seen as those
that will bring about organizational development that is deared at developing our members within their circuits, among other
objectives
4.10 Conclusion
Once more let me congratulate the secretariat team from district to circuits for your undying support over this six year period.
On behalf of the YMG District executive allow me to take again this opportunity to thank the 2011 and 2014 conventions for
showing confidence in us to take the two terms of office to lead the district which made me to have three terms of office.
It’s a rare privilege that is given only to two men over a tree year period to be part of the secretariat by our constitution at
conventions. This allowed us to be part of the 80 year experience and contributors to the institutional memory of the
Grahamstown YMG.
In his book, Stephen Covey will be remembered most as the author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,
these words are penned down, “THE MAIN THING IS TO KEEP THE MAIN THING THE MAIN THING”
I am indebted to you, my circuit and my friends. I owe special thank you to my Princesses (Ntwasahlobo, Ngangomlambo
and Mthombucwengile) and the Mom for their tireless support and understanding when I was often away when I was
supposed to be with them. Special thanks further go to my Father’s Nation (ISIZWE SAMALUNGA) where at times I would
have to excuse myself in the Traditional routine of my Tribal Authority.
BISHOP SIR REV. FREEMANTLE, PRESIDENT OF THIS CONVENTION REV. MAZALENI, EX- PRESIDENT REV
MAPU, CIRCUIT SUPERINTENDET OF ALEXANDRIA CIRCUIT REV. MPOFU, CIRCUIT SUPERINTENDENTS, CIRCUIT
PRESIDENTS, EVANGELISTS, OFFICIALS AND DELEGATES OF THIS 2017 CONVENTION, I hereby stand for the last
time to present to you the 2017 Secretariat report.

2018 Grahamstown District YMG Financial Highlights
1. 2018 Budgeting Process
The Policy on Effective Financial Management for the Methodist Church of Southern Africa highlights the
importance of compiling accurate and realistic annual budgets for all income, expenditure and capital expenditure.
The said Policy states that the prior year’s budget, and actual data should be used as a guide to determine what
budget is required for the following year.
This year’s budget was thoroughly discussed by both outgoing and incoming YMG district executives. On 17
February 2018, the proposed budget was presented to and accepted by the Extended District Executive
Committee meeting held at Alexandria Circuit. During the compilation of this budget, the following factors were
considered:
(a) Assessment per member changed to Connexional Assessment per member (from R50 to R60);
(b) Current membership figures (2260) that result to exorbitant Connexional assessment;
(c) Annual Connexional General Committee Meeting in February (to be hosted by KNB in 2019),
(d) District Levy per member changed to District Assessment per member (from R30 to R43)
(e) Geographic spread of incoming district executive members,
(f) Remove Bursary contribution by members and increase circuit contribution towards Mazana Fund by
R500,
(g) DVDs included and increased from R450 to R500,
(h) Country’s economy and/or inflation rate,
(i) An excess of expenditure due to late payments by circuits and/or circuit debts,
(j) 80th anniversary celebrations may rekindle new vigour and bring back missing members –
subscriptions will be paid,
2. Restructuring Mazana Fund
2.1 Purpose
(a) The fund is a bursary facility established under the name VJ Mazana Bursary Fund. It is created as
one of the YMG mission work managed by the District Executive within the Treasurer and DDSR
Secretary Portfolios. It is meant to benefit individual students with a potential to succeed at higher
education or tertiary level of education, who, however, cannot meet the financial obligation required to
complete their higher education or tertiary studies.
(b) It is not a gambling scheme, however, the approach to raising the fund shall create a harmonious
completion among participating circuit within the Grahamstown District. Fund raising is permitted from
outside the YMG Department but within the confines of the laws of the church and with a direct
permission from the District and Circuit Presidents.
2.2 Fundraising Strategy
23 | P a g e Celebrating 80 years
#Healing Wounds, Restoring Human Dignity Through Mission
(a) District Executive Committee clusters circuits according their membership roll to form groups. There
will be continuous monitoring of membership roll to ensure equitable and fair grouping.
(b) District Executive Committee determine the realistic and reasonable targets for clustered circuits.
The targets should be tabled and accepted by the Extended District Executive Committee or District
Convention.
(c) Upon targets acceptance by District General Committee or District Convention, the fundraising
healthy competition begins immediately.
(d) Circuits shall deposit the Mazana Fund to the YMG District investment account. Circuits are
reminded that high achievers will be rewarded, therefore, efforts to exceed set target with
considerable amounts are encouraged.
(e) Circuits that are unable to deposit directly to the bank shall pay all Mazana Fund money at District Convention.
(f) All circuits will participate during the fundraising activity during District Convention.
(g) The circuit that has the overall highest percentage of exceeding its set target will be declared a
winner and receive a floating trophy plus recognition reward.
(h) All circuits that have met their set targets as well as group winners will receive recognition reward.

5. Internal Controls
(a) Scriptures tell us that God owns all that He has blessed us with as individuals, including our wealth, and
we are stewards of it. The church including its organizations, in turn, is to be a good steward of what God’s
people has provided it financially and ensure it is being used in accordance with His will. It’s for this reason
that Grahamstown District Young Men’s Guild (YMG) commit to introduce financial internal controls, which
would be system of processes and procedures utilized for the primary purpose include, but not limited to,
full financial disclosure to as many members (including other Methodist Church of Southern Africa
structures) as possible and comply with standards of good governance and accountability as encapsulated
in Policy on Effective Financial Management (PEFM) for Methodist Church of Southern Africa. The aim is
to introduce these procedures and controls by no later than 1 May 2018.
(b) Moreover, the Grahamstown District Young Men’s Guild (YMG) has negotiated and entered into revolving
credit contract with East London Minutemann Press. The contract allows the Grahamstown District Young
Men’s Guild (YMG) to undertake all printing requirements and settle the bill within 30 days of service.
6. Financial Recommendations
(a) Grahamstown District YMG budget should be submitted to and approved by the Extended District
Executive Committee at its annual February meeting.
(b) A Financial Statements shall be prepared by the District Treasurer and be presented at February, April
(audited at District Convention) and July meetings.
(c) This convention is requested to mandate the District Executive Committee to urgently develop and
implement YMG District Finance Procedures and report back on the progress at the next Extended
District Executive Committee in July 2018.
26 | P a g e Celebrating 80 years
#Healing Wounds, Restoring Human Dignity Through Mission
(d) District Executive Committee shall conduct an extensive review of Mazana Fund circuit targets and
report back at the next Extended District Executive Committee in July 2018.
7. Conclusion
My sincere appreciation goes to President, ex-President and the outgoing District Treasurer for their guidance and
support. My appreciation also goes to Circuit Treasurers, for their continuous and vigorous engagement with the
challenges that face YMG, and their bold and steadfast advice. I also wish to thank all members of new District
Executive Committee who collectively own matters pertaining to finances of the YMG. Their support and
understanding for tough measures is highly appreciated.
I must thank my family and PE West Circuit 231 for their continued support and inspiration. And finally, I must
express sincere gratitude to all YMG members in the Grahamstown District for embracing change - and critiques
and concerns. This is what keeps us accountable and drives us to constantly improve. Boobawo sinoxanduva of
working together to ensure that YMG heals the wounds and restore human dignity through mission, and have a
belief that tomorrow, will be better than today. In conclusion, let me remind this Convention of what former
President Nelson Mandela said: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference
we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead…”
Ndiyabulela boobawo.

INTRODUCTION
The report reflects on the activities carried by the DDSR office from 79th convention that took place in Motherwell circuit. A
number of events have unfolded in the country this year, change in leadership of our country, violence against women and
children, commissions on corruption, political killings or murders taking place in the country and more especially in KZN, Life
eSidimeni saga and instability in institutions of higher learning. Our country is still afflicted with an alarming rate of road
accidents and unemployment. We must commend our province for an improvement in matric pass although we are still last
on the list of provinces.
The report covers the following areas:
1.Music
2.Busaries
3.inkanyamba
4.Baqwa month
5.Outreach programmes
6.Circuit activities
MUSIC
There are two pieces that are prescribed for the music completion hymns 14 iSiswati and hymn 434 iSipedi. We will
compete in 2019 convention in preparation for our connectional triennial convention. We request choirs to familiarize
themselves with the pieces thereof.
BURSARIES
Last year we had 5 learners that benefited from our bursary scheme. This year we only have one learner because the rest
managed to get assistance from other schemes. The convention must discuss the future of our bursary scheme in relation to
the developments in the country and also to the initiative from the district Bishops office. I must hasten to thank nina Bobawo
for your contributions towards educating umntwana ontsundu.
INKANYAMBA
We had a successful inkanyamba from the 13-15 October 2017, the event was in Cape of Good Hope for Queenstown

elithuba ndibulele aba bazalwane,Maqethuka,Mrubata ,Ximiya… ngokusimela ekapa nangamso magorha evangeli. It is
important that the convention should be aware that the next Inkanyamba will be hosted by Queenstown district for
Grahamstown district meaning preparations for that should start early.
BAQWA COMMEMORATION
February month was declared by connection as Baqwa month, districts and circuits are expected to host activities. The
district attached the pillar on education as the theme around which district act ivies centered. We felt we should prioritize
poor circuits as our target to donate school uniform. We started in Alexandria, Middleburg, Sundays River Valley,Tyhume
Amathole then PE West circuit. The event has grown lips and bounds and well supported by circuits. We have had a

successful event on the 4th March 2018, PE west where we donated school uniforms to six schools in the area. The
convention must take a discussion on the future of Baqwa month and further define circuit support and other means of
sustaining the initiative.
OUTREACH PROGRAM
In line with the THOKOZA STATEMENT, NOT IN OUR NAME. During our convention in Motherwell Circuit we had a match
to the local magistrate court. We handed in a petition containing issues that were raised by the hosting circuit as priority
