The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.
In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.

The logo and the motto together provide a fitting summary of what the Jubilee Year is all about. The motto Merciful Like the Father (taken from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and for-giveness without measure (cfr. Lk 6:37-38). The logo – the work of Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik – presents a small sum-ma theologiae of the theme of mercy. In fact, it repre-sents an image quite important to the early Church: that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost soul demonstrating that it is the love of Christ that brings to completion the mystery of his incarnation culminating in redemption. The logo has been designed in such a way so as to express the profound way in which the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with a love with the power to change one’s life. One par-ticular feature worthy of note is that while the Good Shepherd, in his great mercy, takes humanity upon him-self, his eyes are merged with those of man. Christ sees with the eyes of Adam, and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Every person discovers in Christ, the new Adam, one’s own humanity and the future that lies ahead, con-templating, in his gaze, the love of the Father.
The scene is captured within the so called mandorla (the shape of an almond), a figure quite important in early and medieval iconography, for it calls to mind the two natures of Christ, divine and human. The three concentric ovals, with colors progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of Christ who carries humanity out of the night of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the darker color suggests the impenetrability of the love of the Father who forgives all.

From the Desk of Fr. Aloysius
Dear Parishioners!
We will soon be entering the Lenten Season. Dur-ing this Lent I will be having Adoration with guid-ed meditations each Wednesday at 7:30 pm in St. Mary's Church. During the Adoration time we will be reflecting on the theme of the Word of God for that week.
In the first week we will meditate on the roots of our being and the history of God's grace within us.
Transcendence and transfiguration will be the theme of the second week.
In the third week we will consider where our secu-rities are. Our security is in our self-giving love.
The fourth week brings us to the theme of reconcil-iation. Christ reconciled us to Himself and to the Father. We too need to follow that example and reconcile with each other.
Rooted in Christ, we give up everything for the sake of love and his kingdom. The fifth week brings us to the central theme of Lent and the pas-sion and death of Christ. It is only by dying to our-selves, that we will then be able to truly find our-selves.
Let us make this spiritual journey together, as we grow and prepare for the celebration of the Lord's passion, death and resurrection.
