This week, Rotarian and Lowndes County School Superintendent Dr.
Steve Smith will bring a report from
the county school system.
Please welcome Dr. Steve Smith.
Zach Miller pulled double duty last week
working hard to get rid of his red badge.
Zach led our prayer for the day and made
us laugh with his very first Sunshine
Report.
Great job Zach!

Once again, the always-energetic Nancy Warren came prepared with
props to help get us all thinking about family and fellowship activities.
If you have any ideas, email Nancy at warrennd@bellsouth.net.
Membership Committee Chair Wes Sewell lead our annual membership
meeting last week. We heard from a number of service committee
chairs and everyone should be pumped and ready to get involved!
Wes is seen here showing off our updated Projects and Activities guide.
This brochure and the How to Propose a New Member brochure are
available at the desk each week. See Barbara Knight for details. We
are working to get both documents on our website as well.
Malcolm Rainey celebrated 50 years as a member of the Rotary Club
of Valdosta last week. In honor of his special anniversary, Malcolm
gave a generous $50 Happy Dollars which was quickly matched by
members at the meeting. Congratulations Malcolm. It is an honor to
serve beside you in Rotary!
The Rotary Club of Valdosta is a Community Partner in Education (CPIE). All funds
given to literacy projects each year are produced by the money donated by Rotarians in
our literacy cups. At each meeting we have a moment to “Pause to Pass” our cups to
each member around our tables. While participation is voluntary, we are confident that
every member contributes during the course of the year.
During last week’s meeting John Thomas presented checks to representatives from
J.L. Lomax and Pine Grove elementary schools. These grants of $1000 each will be
used to buy books for the school libraries.
Accepting the grant on behalf of J.L.
Lomax were Ms. Sheila Robinson (l) and
Ms. Linda Sermons (r). John Thomas
presented the checks and was all smiles
with a little help from the audience.
Accepting the grant on behalf of Pine
Grove Elementary were academic coach
Ms. Angie Dasher (l) and library media
specialist Ms. Cindy Taylor (r).
Dr. Steve Smith began his education career as a teacher and coach at
Clarke Central High School, in Athens, Ga. He later moved to Central
High School in Macon, Ga. where he served as a teacher, coach, assistant
principal, and principal over an eighteen year period. In 2000, he decided
to expand his career goals and he became the Superintendent for Pulaski
County School System in Hawkinsville, Ga. For the past six years he has
served as the superintendent of the Lowndes County School System in
Valdosta, Ga. Under his leadership, the Lowndes County School System
has been recognized for making back-to-back system-wide AYP, as an
exemplary school system by (SACS) Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools, and a Distinguished School System by the Georgia Department of
Education.
Dr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from
Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville in 1973 and went on
to receive additional Masters of Education Degrees, one in Social Science
Education with a concentration in U.S. History and Government in 1983
and one in Educational Administration in 1989. In 1992, Dr. Smith
obtained an Educational Specialist degree at Georgia College & State
University. In 2001, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in
Educational Administration and Supervision from Georgia State University
in Atlanta. As a promising graduate student in the field of education he
received the J. Everette DeVaughn Academic Award from Georgia State
University in 1999.
Dr. Smith is a 2001 graduate of the Superintendent's Professional
Development Program. His distinguished career in Bibb County (1982-
2000) as a teacher, coach and administrator was highlighted by a 2000
feature story in the Macon Telegraph entitled, "Finishing First," written by
Bill Boyd. Dr. Smith is featured in Joe McDaniel's book entitled; The
Boy's of 31206, which features several successful graduates of A.R.
Willingham, school for boys, in Macon, Ga. In July of 2007, Dr. Smith was
appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue as a member of the Board of
Control of the Southern Regional Education Board. Dr. Smith is a member
of Pi Lambda Theta International Honor Society in Education, as well as a
member of Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society. He also serves as an adjunct
faculty member at Valdosta State University.
