İstanbul13-14 million people, 20% of Turkey’s population, live in İstanbul.

Probability of occurence of a large earthquake in next 30 years is greater than %50.

Probability of occurence of a large earthquake in next 10 years is greater than %20.

Impacts after a probable 7.5 Richter scale earthquake in Istanbul;

Approximately 70.000 dead people120.000 injured-heavily injured people 400.000 lightly injured people

Scene in Marmara following the 1999 earthquake...

Equipped with essential knowledge, skills and tools

To respond immediately

Disasters that may occur in their region

Until professional assistance arrives.

DISASTER VOLUNTEERS

DISASTER VOLUNTEERS (continued...)

The rationale behind training

community members as volunteer

response teams is to prepare

individuals, first to help themselves

and their families and then neighbors

in the event of a disaster.

DISASTER VOLUNTEERS (continued...)nce emergency services workers

will not be able to help everyone immediately, people with training and practice and by working as a team, will be able to make a difference in reducing the loss of life in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

Si

Civil Defence workers tried to reach by walking to E.Q survivals in Sichuan/China mountains.

DISASTER VOLUNTEERS (continued...)

Trained community disaster volunteer is not meant to replace the professional first responders.

It is intended as a community self-help program to be used in

times of disaster until the professionals arrive.

DISASTER VOLUNTEERS (continued...)

It provides people on the scene, who have basic training in

first-aid and triage

light search and rescue

small fire suppression
