Project Outline

• Initiated in July 2013 with a three year GEORG grant to evaluate the process of magma/water interation at the base of geothermal systems.

• 5.5-4Ma Hafnarfjall-Skarðsheiði central volcano now deeply exposed.

• The study could serve as pilot work for further work on analogous intrusions.

• Valuable information gathered for the exploration of active intrusion related geothermal systems with extreme temperatures.

Conclusions• The eroded interior of the 5,5 - 4 Ma Hafnarfjall-Skarðsheiði central

volcano in W-Iceland portrays an excellent example for the workings of an intrusive induced geothermal system.

• The dissimilar contacts of the gabbro demonstrates the vast differences between a conductive contact versus direct water / magma interaction.

• It has highlighted that with a renewal of a fresh ground water against an intrusion, a very efficient convective heat transfer mechanism can develop.
