ADRA Macedonia activities

September – December 2015

Since the start of 2015, more than 1.000.000 migrants and

refugees have arrived in Europe through the sea. Most of them are trying to escape

war, violence and persecution from their home countries.

It is estimated that there are 3.735 people drowned or

missing at sea.

In their desperate attempt to get to Europe, many migrants and refugees decide to travel with unsafe ships and boats. More than 80 percent arrived in Greece, most of them on the island of Lesbos.

As distressed as we are by the stories of the people who were forced to leave their homes and travel unsafely away from their countries, our ADRA Macedonia team is glad for the opportunity

to help these people on their way to a better future.

But there are still many people who need our help…

One of the major activities of the ADRA Macedonia team related to helping migrants

and refugees is providing food for the people as they arrive

at the Transit center Tabanovce.

We have provided more than 10.000 food items to refugees and migrants

at the Transit Center Tabanovce.

Another activity that our team is focused on is purchasing and giving warm clothes –

jackets, gloves, warm socks, and winter hats.

Our volunteers are primarily concerned with the children and people with disability,

helping them to put on their new winter clothes. We are also giving warm blankets that the refugees can take with them on their road.

During our work on field we have noticed that refugees have a

huge need for hygiene supplies to keep their health on the long and hard road to a better life.

Now our team provides packages with basic hygiene supplies for

men, women and children, according to their needs.

Our team has provided over 5.000 various hygiene items in accordance

with the people’s needs.

The popular baby-carriers were especially helpful to the

migrants, as they travel with their youngest family members,

on their way to peaceful and happier life. ADRA Macedonia

team was also assisting with the adjustment of the baby-carriers at the Transit Center Tabanovce.

In addition to the wither gear, we have provided raincoats for the youngest, too, to keep them

dry during the rainy days.

In order to prepare ourselves for more effective help for the

refugees and give support to the people helping the refugees in

Greece, we have visited the refugee camp in Evzoni.

In December, ADRA Macedonia team visited the home of the

great humanitarian and famous singer Esma Redzepova, where

we talked about the possibilities of her engagement

in our activities. She was happy to join our team on field

and help the refugees.

Arranging cooperation with Esma

In cooperation with ADRA Germany, in the frames of

the project "Children helping children", this year we had

the opportunity to bring packages and happiness to many children in Institutes

for Rehabilitation and Homes for Orphans throughout

Macedonia.

Sometimes, for people facing a hard time in their life, a

friendly face, empathy and a helping hand can mean more

than anything else. The smiles that we see on people’s faces warm our hearts and give us even greater motivation to

continue in our cause.
