Ministry of Information

• Central governmental publicity machine

• Formed September 1939

• Tell the citizen ‘clearly and swiftly what he is to do, where he is to do it, how he is to do it and what he should not do’.

What is a poster?

A public notice aims to inform or command. A poster aims to seduce, to exhort, to sell, to educate, to convince, to appeal. Whereas a public notice distributes information to interested or alert citizens, a poster reaches out to grab those who might otherwise pass it by.

TASK 1: THINK

What it is in a poster that makes you: STOP LOOK ACT?

What do you need to include (and maybe exclude) to encourage someone to consider/attend University? Who is your audience (age/ gender/

subject)? How much can you tell them? What do you want them to do?

Recruitment: A “Call to Action”

Propaganda Techniques (1937)

Word games Name-calling Glittering generalities Euphemisms

False connections Transfer Testimonial

Special Appeals Plain Folks Bandwagon Fear http://www.propagandacritic.com/

Your poster must…

APPEAL

TASK 2: LOOK

Take 10 minutes to look around the Campus: What are people doing (learning,

socialising)? What facilities are available (buildings,

library, computers, gym)? What subjects are available? Is there anyone you can get a quote from?

Which of these can you use in your poster?

TASK 3: CREATE

MINIMUM: Create a ‘concept’ poster, which

includes the main slogan, areas for images and smaller text, contact info.

PowerPoint: If you know how to use it, you can.

Finished Product: If you’re able! University of Winchester images:
