Common Core Standards

•  What are they? Common Core Standards define what students should understand and be able to do in English Language Arts and Math in grades K-12.

•  Implementation Challenges: Professional Development (PD) for teachers, new curriculum and materials, new assessments (local and state level and any technology needed)

Common Core Standards

•  New state funding – one time funds – given this fall, $3.6 million for PUSD, to be spent in 13-14 and 14-15 on PD, instructional materials and technology.

•  Common Core implementation schedule: –  11-12 and 12-13 – PUSD wrote new curriculum

units, piloted these units in some schools, began PD –  13-14 – expand new units to all schools and

continue PD –  14-15 – continue to refine teaching, implement new

state assessments

Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF)

New method of funding districts – consolidates many specific categorical programs into 2 main streams of funding

•  base amount for each student •  supplemental/concentration amounts for

students who are English Learners, Low Income or in Foster Care

Not fully funded – approx. 12% funded in 13-14 and future funding unclear.

Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF)

Goals of LCFF – more transparency of how education funding

works – more local (district level) control/flexibility in

how funds are spent for students – more accountability through Local Control

and Accountability Plan (LCAP) document and process of involving stakeholders

PUSD Master Planning Process

Process in which PUSD is looking at our student population, programs and facilities.

Have identified 3 core values and are in the process of making decisions based on staff recommendations. These decisions could affect school and program choice for 14-15 or later.

Master Plan Value Statements •  PUSD values magnet and signature programs as

a way to improve student engagement, meet the diverse needs of PUSD parent and students, and improve economic integration across our district while providing high quality educational programs at all our schools.

•  PUSD values neighborhood schools and preserves parent/family choice and signature programs.

•  PUSD values schools of sustainable size and appropriate grade configuration in order to provide sufficient resources to deliver a quality educational program.

School/City/Community Work Plan (SCCWP)

Framework approved by PUSD and City of Pasadena.

Goal is to align our resources to achieve child, youth and family success.

7 Result Teams have been formed. Anyone can join, people can be on more than one team and meetings are open to the public.

Process for Result Teams: •  Develop priorities •  Define possible next steps •  Make recommendations to governing bodies

School/City/Community Work Plan (SCCWP)

•  The list of Result Teams and next meeting dates can be found on the PUSD website (www.pusd.us – under About Us, Our Community) or City of Pasadena website (www.ci.pasadena.ca.us – Human Services and Recreation, School/City/Community).
