transcript

PLASTIC

Data released by the United States Environmental

Protection Agency shows that somewhere between 500

billion and a trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide

each year.

National Geographic News September 2, 2003

Less than 1% of bags are recycled. It cost more to recycle a bag than to produce a new

one.

- Christian Science Monitor News Paper

“There's harsh economics behind bag recycling: It costs US $4,000 (Approx. Rs. 2,00,000/-) to process and recycle 1 ton of plastic bags, which can then be sold on the commodities market for US $32 (Approx. Rs.1600/-)”

- Jared Blumenfeld (Director of San Francisco's Department of the Environment)

Then…Where Do They

Go???

A study in 1975, showed oceangoing vessels together dumped 8 million pounds

(Approx. 3.63 million Kgs.) of plastic annually. The real reason that the world's landfills weren't overflowing with plastic was because most of it ended up in an

ocean-fill

- U.S. National Academy of Sciences

Bags get blown around…

…to different parts of our lands

…and to our seas, lakes and rivers.

Plastic bags account for over 10 percent of the debris washed up on the U.S. coastline – It may be

the same or even more for India !!!

- National Marine Debris Monitoring Program

Plastic bags photodegrade:Over time they break down

into smaller, more toxic petro-polymers

- CNN.com/ tecnhology November 16, 2007

which eventually contaminate soils and waterways

- CNN.com/tecnhology November 16, 2007

Nearly 200 different species of sea life including whales, dolphins,

seals and turtles die due to plastic bags

So…

What do we do?

PAPER BAGS???Think twice

Large scale Deforestation

Ecological Imbalance-

Higher chemical- Air & Water

pollution

Huge Machinery Cost

Accidents while Logging

Large Wastage of Water

Fuel & Electricity-

Higher Energy Cost

Paper – Not such a good option

Reusable Cloth grocery bags found unacceptably high levels of

Bacterial, Yeast, mold & Coliform counts

Risk of food poisoning including Skin infections such as Bacterial

boils,

Allergic reactions, triggering of Asthma attacks & Ear infections

Needs higher energy in production of cloth

Not waterproof

Emission of hazardous Carbon Gases

Requires regular washing wasting a lot of water & the detergent

chemicals are not safe creating Allergy to the user.

Weighs more than Plastic - Needs more storage space - Higher

Transportation cost

Disadvantages of Cloth Bags

If plastic were to be replaced in its uses by other materials:

Rubbish weight would increase by 150%. Packaging would weigh 300% more. Energy consumed by the industry would

increase by 100%. Reduction of weight in aircraft saves an

average of 10,000 gallons of fuel per plane, Per annum, world over. In automobiles, it is directly responsible for

doubling the fuel efficiency since the 1970's.

So…Is there any other alternative?

Yes! “AMTREX” has introduced a new type of plastic in

the form of Compostable

Plastic

Compostable Plastics undergoes degradation by biological processes during composting to yield carbon

dioxide (CO2), water, inorganic compounds and biomass.

Bio-plastics: 42% Reduction in Carbon Footprint

The intrinsic carbon dioxide emissions reduction in using Bioplastic in place off regular polyolefin is 42%. The study found that approximately 1.82 kilograms of carbon dioxide are produced for each kilogram of Bioplastic used, compared to 3.14 kilograms of carbon dioxide emitted for the same amount of polyolefin. This is a very significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, especially when considering that worldwide market for polyolefin is about 45 billion kilograms, or approximately 100 billion pounds."

- Michigan State University

Petro-based plastics use an estimated 200,000

barrels of oil a day in the United States…

The rising oil prices make Bio plastics look CHEAP

Can replace other plastics in various applications

Extremely useful in nurseries and forests

Hotels and Hospitals

“AMTREX” Plastic Films & bags are 100% safe for the environment that makes plastic compostable and   biodegradable – plastic

which will not last forever.

“AMTREX” plastic is yellow and available with slight corn starch fragrance,

antistatic and easily coloured.

It does not contain any conventional plastics such as PE, PP, PS and PVC. It can be directly processed into films products without being mixed with other plastics. “AMTREX” plastic Products can thus be easily decomposed by microorganisms in the environment.

By choosing “AMTREX” Plastic, you can stop our animals, land, and oceans from choking on plastic litter. Simply put, we make plastic disappear safely.

By combining “AMTREX” plastic with strong waste management strategies we can reduce the amount of plastic waste going in to landfill. An environmentally safe and sustainable cycle is possible.

We can all get involved and take action.

Spread the word – only buy products made or wrapped in “AMTREX” plastic.

Convert your product packaging to “AMTREX” plastic.

Encourage your local councils and governments to adapt existing waste management solutions to cater for “AMTREX” plastic.

It’s a challenge “AMTREX” is taking on to make a real difference to our planet.

Also, the resin which has been used to

make plastic films & bags has passed

tests in compliance with following

standards:

ISO14851

ISO14852

ISO14855

ISO16929

EN13432

ASTM D 6400-99

OUR MISSION

To help global Communities, Governments, Companies & People to

manage the use of plastic safely so as to ensure a healthier environment for the

present as well as the future generations.

Demand for Biodegradable Plastics

Growing – Report

Demand for Biodegradable plastics is expected

to expand 16% annually to approx. 32,72,

72,727 Kg. in 2012, valued at approx. Rs. 4140,

50, 00,000, according to a new forecast report.

Biodegradable Plastics Forecasts for 2012 &

2017 says average prices will continue to fall as

a result of higher capacity and greater

production efficiencies, as well as price mixes

reflecting fastest growth for the lower priced

resins.

FAQ’s1. What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable?

Biodegradable means that the products break down through a naturally occurring microorganism, such as fungi or bacteria over a period of time. Biodegradable products are usually made from plant or animal sources. Biodegradable products can create methane, a greenhouse gas with 62 times the Global Warming Potential of carbon dioxide when dumped into landfills. Also, biodegradable waste may contain toxins.

Compostable plastics mean that the products must be able to break down into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass at the same rate as paper. Also, the broken down product should not produce any toxic material and should be able to support plant life. Compostable products are usually made from plant materials. Because biodegradable is used loosely with no legal enforced definition, Compostability is more desirable for disposable products.

FAQ’s

2. Is “AMTREX” Plastic biodegradable or compostable?

“AMTREX” Plastic is both 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable.

3. What does it mean by 100% Compostable?
