Grace Lutheran Church A worshipping community of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
www.GraceLutheranChesapeake.org
June 2016 “Grace Greetings”
Mission Statement:
We are a community of believers in Christ called to be servants to all people.
To the churches of Galatia... For six Sundays (starting May 29), we will hear sections of Paul’s letter to the Galatians
in worship, so I thought I would take this opportunity to tell you a little background
information about Galatians.
Galatians was written around 50-55 C.E. by Paul to a community that included both
Jews and non-Jews. This letter starts similarly to Paul’s other letters, but lacks one important
aspect of the normal Pauline opening—the Thanksgiving. Romans 1:8 reads: “I thank my
God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed through the world.”
First Corinthians 1:4 reads: “I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of
God that has been given to you in Christ Jesus.” But there is no thanksgiving in Galatians;
instead, Paul quickly begins attacking those who have preached contrary to the gospel
that he himself preached to them and those who have strayed to that contrary gospel. The
big issue in the letter to the Galatians is “justification by faith through faith”—a good
Lutheran topic, which is why Martin Luther called it “My Katie” (in honor of his wife).
Others came to the young churches in Galatia and suggested that they must follow
Jewish law in order to be saved, but Paul maintains that there is NOTHING we must do in
order to gain eternal life.
“We know that a person is justified not by the works of the law but through faith
in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might
be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no
one will be justified by the works of the law.” (Galatians 2:16)
Believing differently, Paul says, is “[submitting] to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1).
I understand Paul’s passion, some of you have seen me get riled about the
same thing in sermons and Bible studies. I, like Paul, get quite passionate when
people say that there is more that they or someone else must do in order to earn
God’s grace. By definition, grace is unmerited! However, the old creature in us likes
to be in control, since it is so hard to trust that God truly has us. BUT GOD DOES!!!
I encourage you at some point this month to read the whole letter to the
Galatians (it is only 6 chapters) and hear Paul preaching to you as we read pieces of
it read in worship and HOPEFULLY you hear the true gospel to which Paul refers in the
preaching as well.
But just in case…hear it again now…for good
measure…GOD LOVES YOU…no matter what!
God Bless,
Pastor Leslie

Changes in Worship
By Jennifer Scherman You may have noticed that have started
using a more simplified bulletin in both
services. There are many reasons for this,
some being: It’s more cost effective, both
for Grace and the environment, as we do
not use as much paper as we normally
would. It’s also important to use the
resources we already have in the church,
for example, our pew bibles and the ELWs.
Most of our service is printed straight from
the ELWs, so why not just use the physical
books? Also, you may have noticed that
on a monthly basis, we make small
changes to the service, mostly in our
creed, prayers, and some songs. We make
these changes to keep the services from
being redundant, too simple, with very
little-to-no meaning. We tend to recite
prayers from memory and not think about
what they mean. Changing up the service
format, prayers, and creeds and songs,
allows us to pay more attention to what
we say. So I encourage you, this summer,
to pick up the ELW during the service and
take a glance. I challenge you to look at
the Gospel and hear it in a new and
different way.
Hymn Lotto Throughout the summer at the late
service, we will picking our sending hymn
via the hymn lotto. List a favorite hymn of
yours (in the ELW) on the green slip in your
bulletin each week, turn it in during the
Offering, and hold your breath to see if
your suggestion is picked!
From the President
Summer is just about here and we have
shifted our service times to the summer
hours, 8:30 and 10:00AM.
As school wraps up and vacations begin
please remember we still have many things
going at church and we always have need
for extra hands. Our nursery program is off
to a good start with a growing population
of children showing up at each service, but
we still need volunteers. Please take the
time to sign up to help. I know many of you
may feel you have already raised children
or done your turn, but this is about reaching
out and helping young parents to find a
church where their children can grow with
Christ. Call it Evangelism, Stewardship or
Fellowship if you like, but it boils down to
helping a member of our family here at
Grace.
The grass is growing and THANKS to all who
have signed up to help with the lawn
mowing. There are still weekends left to sign
up for. If you want to volunteer but are
unsure, see myself or Gary Galles for details.
Finally, as we move into the summer
months, remember Grace has many things
going on and it is not just about Sunday
mornings. Stay in touch! We try to keep
our website (http://
www.gracelutheranchesapeake.org/) and
Facebook page current. If you have any
other ideas or want to get something
started, please step forward and talk with
me, Pastor, or any Council member.
Grow with Grace and be with Christ,
Rick Pabst
