Last month, we all took part, in one way or another, in the celebrations of the feast of St. Patrick’s Day. In this State of NJ, there were at least twenty-five parades and many more celebrations … of one form or another. Our photographic contributors have assisted us in compiling a collage of photographs depicting the many types of celebrations that took place. Turn to pages 6 & 7 of this issue to see whom you might be able to identify. Now, that we have reached the month of April, the warmer weather is in the air and “Spring has sprung”, as the saying goes. It’s time to enjoy the many benefits of this season. In particular, our writers have focused on baseball, a very popular pastime, as season “openers” are upon us. While most of the fans are thinking about “the Majors,” we’ve decided to focus on the local Minor League teams here in our State. Learn more about the Lakewood BlueClaws and the Trenton Thunder in this issue’s main editorial feature. For another form of enjoyment, our writers would like to introduce you to a local area country band that will help you “get rowdy.” Meet Nikki Briar & The Sweetbriar Band. This group of seven
musicians performs a music style called “Country Rock”. They play throughout the region and can be seen and heard at such venues as Jenk’s Club, the Stone Pony, Starldand Ballroom and more. Learn more about Nikki & the band in this month’s Band Profile. It’s time to meet a local area young woman who loves her job as bartender and is currently enjoying her position at UB Social in Union Beach. Danielle LaCapria grew up in Hazlet, went to school locally, then started as a hostess at a nearby restaurant before “jumping behind the bar”. Danielle’s other interests include cosmetology and warm weather traveling. Read more about our Mixologist-of-the-Month in this issue’s feature. Hope you enjoy what we’ve put together for you this month. Take a read, find some new venues to try and then, get out and “play ball”. BobByrne,Publisher

Danielle LaCapriaby CLARE MARIE CELANO
Danielle LaCapria likes exploring options - in her job, in her education and in her choice of career. But for right now, the young woman is happily bartending at UB Social in Union Beach and enjoying every minute of it. LaCapria came to UB Social after a seven-year stint at Park East in Hazlet, a venue that provided her with her first experience as bartender. Danielle started working in the restaurant industry at the age of 16 as a hostess at Lakeside Manor in Hazlet. She then took a job at Park East and worked as hostess until she was 18 when she began training as a bartender. She learned the tricks of the trade at Mix and Mingle Bartending
School. “While I was working at Park East, I heard about UB Social, so I took a bartending job here and I really liked it. It has a bit of a different atmosphere from where I had previously worked. It’s more casual, more like a sports bar,” she said. LaCapria says she loves working in customer service and bartending gives her the opportunity to do that. “I love seeing people having a good time. I have a lot of regulars here and I also have a lot of customers
that followed me here,” she said. “I really enjoy bartending. It gives me the opportunity to meet so many interesting people. It’s a lot of fun and I love hearing stories about their lives.” “Bartending is fun and I make good money but it’s probably not forever,”
Danielle explains. In addition to her bartending training, LaCapria also holds a license I cosmetology which she trained for in the vocational program at Raritan High School. “It’s a family thing,” she says. “My mother, my grandmother and some of my cousins all work or worked as cosmetologists.” LaCapria maintains her license, keeping her options open. She also attended Brookdale Community College in Lincroft and began working toward a degree in dental hygiene. Although she has not completed the program, dental hygiene is still an interest for her and is still on her horizon, evidenced by her comment, “I like to jump into a lot of different things. I like different trades.” In her free time, LaCapria loves to travel to warmer climates. She says she “fell in love with Miami” after
attending a friend’s wedding there. “Miami is one of my favorite spots,” she adds, “It’s beautiful. I love the atmosphere. It’s fun and exciting and I can’t wait to go back again.”

by Bill “The Brewer”
There’s something about spring time that goes perfectly with beer. Nothing beats a nice warm day, not too hot, enjoying a cold brew while watching the flowers and trees come back to life. It’s no surprise that you can find quite a few beer festivals around this time of year. If you’ve never been to a beer festival, allow me to paint the picture: Imagine all the beer you can drink, offered by dozens of different breweries, each bringing their best beers in hopes of standing out and making a name for themselves. It’s a friendly mob of beer enthusiasts doing what they do best. Rookies to the festival scene attack these events like a kid in a candy store. In no time, they are drunk as a skunk and lose some of the enjoyment. Veterans pace themselves, talk to friends, and seek out the stars of the show. You can usually spot the experienced festival goer wearing a necklace of pretzels (palate cleansers) with their nose buried deep in the taster glass. My advice to the uninitiated is to take your time and have a strategy when you attend these events. It’s best to start with lighter flavored beers and work up to more hoppy beers. Starting with IPAs can overwhelm your taste buds and mask more delicate flavors of a lighter beer. I also suggest taking notes. It might sound a little nerdy,
but after a few hours of tasting beer most of us will forget some of what we’ve tried. Another good piece of advice: take the time to be adventurous. Rather than spending hard earned money on a six pack or a pint at the bar, beer fests allow us to try unique beers without committing to a full pint. Looking for a festival near you? Here’s a list of some great festivals coming up this spring in New Jersey:
April 8th & 9th – Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival – Atlantic City, NJ
May 14th – Handcrafted At Perkins – Collingswood, NJ
May 21st – Beer BBQ Bacon Showdown – Morristown, NJ
June 10th & 11th – Wildwood Beer Fest – Wildwood, NJ
June 25th – Battleship New Jersey Craft Beer Festival – Camden, NJ
If you have any questions about these events, or if you’d like to share your own favorites, reach out to me on Twitter @TheBrewerBill.
Cheers!

Basil MargaritasINGREDIENTS:1 can (12 ounces) frozen limeade concentrate10 strawberries (or 12 if you’re using smaller ones from the farmer’s market or your backyard.)8 basil leaves2 to 2 1/2 cups tequila (gold or silver)
DIRECTIONS:Empty the limeade concentrate into a pitcher. Add 2 1/2 cans of water and 1 1/2 (18 ounces, or 2 1/4 cups) cans of tequila (or a bit less, if you don’t want your drinks to be quite as strong). Hull the strawberries, slice lengthwise, and add to the pitcher. Crumple the basil a little in your hands (this will help the basil flavor release into the drink) and add it to the pitcher, too. Place the pitcher, covered, in the fridge overnight, or for at least four hours. When you remove the pitcher from the fridge, your margaritas will be a lovely pale pink color. Now all you have to do is serve them and wait for the compliments to pour in.

Come get rowdy with us!Make way for the New Jersey Country Girl, Nikki Briar and her SweetBriar Band. Her love for music is evident in everything she does from the endless hours honing her craft, writing songs, recording albums, and performing all over the East Coast. Nikki Briar devotes 100 percent of herself to her music, her husband, and her fans.
First, Let’s meet team Briar: Nikki Briar, singer and guitar (she can play the drums, too); Dominick DiPalma, bass guitar; Derek Katz, drums; Bill Miller, guitar; Paul Baccash, guitar; James Ryan, steel guitar/guitar; and Jeff Lampert, steel guitar.
Hailing from Union County, New Jersey, Nikki grew up in a musical family. Her father was a touring drummer and her mother was a classical pianist. While in middle school, Nikki started voice lessons, modeling, and acting, and at that time, she started playing the guitar and drums for her school’s band. She attended a performing arts high school for gifted and talented students and later graduated from Seton Hall University with a degree in Elementary Education/Special Education and Music.
As Nikki started her teaching career, her fiancé Angelo Martinez, now husband, was being deployed to Iraq, moving her to sing at various military events.
It was at one of these events, she recalls, a soldier suggested that she meet his songwriting friend, Mike Kuhl, in Nashville to discuss songwriting.
Next, with her husband deployed overseas, she kept herself “grounded and distracted” from their distance apart by song writing. After going to Nashville, Nikki recorded her first EP called “A Soldier’s Princess”, landing her on the charts and receiving radio play.
Three albums later, Nikki still marvels on how her life developed into what it is today. “I am still shocked to be living a dream that was kind of tucked away due to distractions of life”, she said. “I have been very blessed and enjoy it tremendously.”
Nikki Briar’s music style is considered as country rock. Much of her musical influences come from rock, jazz and blues and infuses that into her style of country music to make it her own. Nikki performs all of her original music at her shows as well as a few cover songs from other artists. “It’s great when people in the crowd start singing along to my radio singles like “Jersey Girl” and “Country Thang,” she says.
There is line-dancing at every performance which keeps her fans dancing all night. Nikki’s favorite songs to perform are most definitely her originals, but she also loves to perform songs by Gretchen Wilson like “Here for the Party” and “Redneck Woman” because the crowd sings along. She performs her version of “Pink Cadillac”, which she performed with her guitarist Paul Baccash for “America’s Got Talent”. “We really kick it up a notch”, she says, “no matter what state we perform in, we do that song and show off our Jersey pride”. She also loves to sing “Chicken Fried” and dedicates it to our veterans and her husband at every show. “It’s always a fun night when we get someone on stage with us singing along!”
At every performance, Nikki Briar wants her audience to have a fun, rowdy time from beginning to end. “I get off the stage and line dance with the audience and teach dances during songs”, she explains. “For the duration of the show, everyone is involved. Music is a great escape for many people so I want my audience to escape from all their stresses for the night and get lost in the music.”
When asked about a favorite New Jersey venue, Nikki could not just name one. Who could blame her? With performances at The Stone Pony, Starland Ballroom, and Jenks Club, it’s a tough choice. “I enjoy performing at every venue for various reasons”, she says. “The second time I performed at the Stone Pony I was the headlining act and it was magical and fun! I love performing at Starland Ballroom and opening for national acts there, it’s a great stage and venue. We always enjoy performing at Jenks Club
because nothing beats the Jersey Shore!”
Nikki Briar and the SweetBriar Band just released a new album, “Free from the Demon” which is available on iTunes and the hard copy is sold online and at every performance.
Nikki is now a new co-host with Big Bad John Patterson and Scott Reid on 89.1 WFDU – Kickin’ It Country Radio. She is also a co-host with founder Jill
Pavel on Project Lips Radio, which is through Heart Songs For Veterans.
Nikki wants her fans to know; “I am very appreciative of our amazing fans and supportive friends and family. I am a proud Army wife and could not do any of this without my husband, Staff Sergeant Angelo Martinez, and I thank you Venues NJ for supporting local music and sharing all my performances!”
Looking ahead, Nikki is excited about the band’s Florida tour in May and their return to Nashville in July. Also, they will be joining Cowboy Troy on tour through Heart Songs For Veterans this fall and next winter. THE HUMANS “Doing life twice sounds like the only thing worse than doing it once,” says the beleaguered paterfamilias of “The Humans,” Stephen Karam’s piercingly funny, bruisingly sad comedy-drama about an American family teetering on the edge of the abyss. The title may sound generic, but there’s nothing blurry about Mr. Karam’s scorching drama, which is currently playing at the Helen Hayes Theater. Drawn in subtle but indelible strokes, Mr. Karam’s play might almost qualify as deep-delving reportage, so clearly does it illuminate the current, tremor-ridden landscape of contemporary America. The sturdy bones of the play are familiar: On one level, it is a classic tale of a fractious family gathering, seasoned with squabbles over those topics that we are all advised to avoid, and rarely do, like money, religion, class and what the kids are doing wrong with their lives. The play takes place in a prewar apartment in Chinatown, where three generations of the Blake family are assembling for Thanksgiving dinner. Newly rented, the apartment is home
A Review
to Brigid Blake and her boyfriend, Richard, who proudly point out its spaciousness. Any New York apartment that includes a spiral staircase pretty much qualifies as spacious, although, as Brigid’s mother and father cannot help noting, the bottom half is a windowless basement. For that matter, upstairs the only windows look out at what Deirdre, Brigid’s mother, describes as “an alley full of cigarette butts.” Brigid corrects her, with cutting exasperation: “It’s an interior courtyard.” Brigid’s father, Erik a fellow who doesn’t see another turn on life’s carousel as a happy prospect — is more encouraging. Deirdre and Erik have driven in from Scranton, Pa., bringing along Erik’s mother, called Momo, who is in a wheelchair and suffering from dementia. Although everyone showers tender care on her, Momo is having one of her “bad days,” as Erik puts it, only rousing from her near-slumber to mutter incomprehensibly. An atmosphere of slightly forced gaiety
barely covers the sense of peril that subtly gathers in the dining room as we learn more about the pressures bearing down upon
the family. Aimee’s ill health has cost her job at a law firm. Brigid, an aspiring composer, is working two bartending jobs as she faces piles of student debt. After toiling for 28 years in various capacities at a private school, Erik is facing uncertain prospects, too. His wife, an office manager, now answers to bosses decades younger than she is, who make much more money. These trials may sound familiar to anyone reading the headlines these days. The Blakes are drawn in rich detail — the family members sing traditional Irish songs and even have their own eccentric Thanksgiving traditions — but they are also emblematic of the embattled middle classes, who have seen the bright expectations of the American dream fraying in the harsh headwinds of
economic stagnation. The part of Deirdre deserves a bushel-ful of kudos for her exquisitely funny role. A modest
woman of great heart and spirit, Deirdre, perhaps more than any other member of the family, has weathered the storms she and her husband have endured with a stolid equanimity, in part because she still trusts in the good Lord. No less fine are Brigid, who cannot keep a damper on her simmering differences with her mother, and Aimee who, still reeling from the loss of her longtime girlfriend, tries to brush off her depression with self-mocking humor. With or without the ominous suggestions that the American family as we know it is under existential threat, “The Humans” is a major discovery, a play as empathetic as it is clear-minded, as entertaining as it is honest. For all the darkness at its core — a darkness made literal in its ghostly conclusion — a bright light shines forth from it, the blazing luminescence of collective artistic achievement.

KP Burke
Venues-NJ: I know you’re a Jersey guy and also a Navy veteran. When I was in the military I used to try my hand, or voice, at a few open mikes. How did you start in this business?
KP Burke: I got into comedy four years ago while still stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. Comedy was fun for me because it’s the first job I’ve ever had where I couldn’t get in trouble for saying something inappropriate in the break room.
First club I ever performed at was Jackie Knights Comedy Club in Saint Augustine, Florida. I won her 8 week open mic competition and the prize was a 30 minute feature spot at three other clubs in the area, so I went from having my first 6 minutes to immediately needing 24 more, it was terrifying but I can tell you that I still write at the same panicked pace to this day.
V-NJ: Is this your real job or do you work at something else for money?
KP Burke: Comedy was way more fun when I was still in the Navy, just because it meant I had money coming in still. After I got out, I started taking college classes back home in Jersey and between the GI Bill and working odd jobs I’m able to keep my nights free for comedy.
V-NJ: Explain your process; do you sit down and write comedy or practice in front of a mirror or in front of your dog?
KP Burke: I’m pretty diligent about my writing, if I know a joke is finished then I don’t waste anyone’s time by repeating it for weeks on end, every open mic I’m working on something new, if it works I put it in my one notebook, if it bombs bad I put it in the “what the f*** were you thinking pile”, I still keep that pile just in case I figure out another approach later. I’m constantly writing, stage time is good for confidence but the rush I get from creating more content and seeing it work is half the reason I’m in comedy still.
V-NJ: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
KP Burke: In five years I’m either dead or still doing this (not kidding). I have a lot of respect
for the talented and original road dogs out there doing 4 gigs a week all around the country so I’d love to move towards that goal. I’m lucky that some really great headliners and well known comics are vouching for me to get into more clubs around the country but especially in NYC.
V-NJ: What’s your calendar look like, are you booked anywhere local in the coming weeks?
KP Burke: My calendar keeps me busy enough while still giving me time to write more and still try to have a semi normal life at least two days a week. I have this unexplainable love for bar shows, clubs are awesome, maybe it’s my inner white trash speaking but I love a good comedy show in a dive bar.
KP is constantly performing and you can learn more about him from his YouTube clips and also from his Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TheKPB.

ENUESnjThanks to friend and comedian
Angelo Gingerelli, I was introduced to KP Burke, a local comic who’s been working at his craft for about 4 years now. While the Borscht Belt may not be what it once was, Jersey’s own version is running in pretty good fashion with the addition of guys like KP. We’ve got comedy shows almost every night of the week from north to south and all along the shore. And what the heck, another shout out to Angelo for his Comedy on Cookman, in Asbury Park!

About Michael’s Feat: Michael’s Feat was created and named in loving memory of Michael Gerard Puharic. Baby Michael was born on July 29, 2000 to Adam and Dana Puharic. During the pregnancy, Dana and Adam were informed that Michael would face grave health problems resulting from a chromosome disorder known as Trisomy 13. Sadly, his life lasted only 83 hours. While he was not with us long, Michael’s legacy lives on and continues to inspire hope. His brave struggle and the love and caring he brought out in people remains an amazing accomplishment.
The Michael Gerard Puharic Memorial Fund, Inc. is a local 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing comfort and easing the burden for parents carrying and caring for seriously ill newborns. We supply material goods and financial support. This allows families caring for an ill preemie or newborn time to focus on what is important - caring for their child.

CommunicationThe act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange
information; the ways of sending information to people by using technology.
It all started with a big bang! No, not the TV show -- the creation of our universe. Then came four-legged creatures, then two-legged creatures, and then Homo sapiens (man). And, as night follows day, next came ways to communicate: signing, grunts and language. As things evolved, new ways of communication took form. Stone carvings, print, sound transmission, etc., etc., etc. It seems each day new technologies are developed to “help” us to communicate information to each other. In the early days of the hospitality industry, word-of-mouth communication was the primary means for building a reputation and a business. People tried an establishment, they liked it and they told others. Some savvy tavern owners printed pamphlets and even created ads for local papers. Today, there are virtually endless ways to build awareness of a venue. As a consumer today, you now have a variety of new technologies available to you to communicate and gather information. (Thank you Apple, IBM, Samsung, etc.). While enjoying the comfort of your home or while driving down the road, you can access (hands-free) all the information you desire. In the media business, it is absolutely essential that we stay on top of the latest technologies that allow us to communicate timely and desired information to our readers and clients. Over the past nine years, the staff at Venues NJ has worked diligently to stay abreast of the latest technologies that allow us to get our timely information and advertisers’ messages out to you. As a result, we have taken the necessary steps to ensure the steady flow of dining and entertainment information you seek. In addition to providing our monthly print edition, we have jumped into the social media arena with both feet. Now, through instant access and link capabilities, each complete issue of Venues NJ can be read through virtually all major social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Instagram, etc. using your computer, tablet, laptop or mobile phone. Our goal is to stay in touch with you and provide you with the timely dining and entertainment information you seek, how and when you want it! We will continue this mission.
