Kehilat haKadosh: The newsletter of Congregation Beth Shalom 1
From the editor
Welcome to the first edition of Kehilat haKadosh (Community of the Holy),
Congregation Beth Shalom’s new newsletter. This newsletter marks
another milestone in our journey to improve member communication
community building. The newsletter is formatted for on-line viewing. Here
are a few tips:
1. If the newsletter opened up in your browser window, save it to your
computer and re-open it in Adobe Reader. Select “File-Save-As”
from the menu - you’ll need to remember where you saved it. This
will make it easier to read and use.
2. Make sure the newsletter window is maximized on your screen.
You can do this by double clicking on the title-bar at the top of the
screen or by clicking on the “maximize” button (the button with a
small rectangle in the top right corner of the window).
3. Use <Page up>, <Page down> or the left and right arrow keys on
your keyboard to move from page to page.
4. Pictures and graphics should be clear. If not, try to adjust the
“zoom”. Sometimes a change of 1 or 2% fixes the display.
5. Use the interactive table of contents (on the left) to quickly jump to
an article of interest. If you don’t see the table of contents
a) Select “View-Navigation Bars-Bookmarks” (if you are in Adobe
Reader)from the menus at the top of your screen.
b) Click on the “show bookmark” icon (if you are in your browser
window) on the left side of the screen. The icon that looks like a
piece of paper with a ribbon/bookmark hanging down.
Our goal is to make the newsletter fun, informative, and easy to use. Please
provide us with feedback. Just remember this is a work in progress. We
probably haven’t gotten it right on the first try.
Thanks
Jim Roberts and Brad Kolar

From the Desk of the
Rabbi
I get worried about how young people will
be affected by scandals when they involve
respected members of the Jewish
community. We have had several quite
recently – The prime minister of Israel, Ehud
Olmert, is leaving office under a cloud a suspicion regarding his business
dealings; the Kosher Meat producer Agriprocessors , whose owners were
arrested for labor and immigration violations; and most recently the Bernie
Madoff scandal, where a highly respected Jew is accused of stealing over
$50 BILLION dollars in a Ponzi scheme. Rabbi Elliot Dorf, an expert on
ethics and Jewish law, noted that it was both illegal and immoral that
Madoff fleeced individual investors of their life savings. "But", he said, "To
do it to Jewish federations representing the Jewish community is just
unconscionable. What happened to Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh BaZeh—all Jews
are responsible for each other?"
If the accomplishments of prominent Jews in our society can make our
young people proud to be Jews and more committed to the Jewish
community, can the misbehavior and crimes of prominent Jews make them
ashamed of their religion and heritage and push them away? I was
reassured by the email I received last week from a representative of our
confirmation class. Speaking of their concern for the workers who had lost
their jobs when the Agriproccesors plant closed, they wrote:
"We, the confirmation class, feel partially responsible for the horrifying
ways the workers were treated. These workers did not have the right to due
process or the right to a fair trial. As Jews, we're taught to believe that the
treatment the workers received is unprincipled. We want to do something
to help, something to make a difference."
How can a group of upper middle class 10th graders in Naperville feel even
partially responsible for the crimes of a Lubavitch family in New York City?
The fact that they do feel partially responsible is an indication that we have
done something right in our education. "Kol yisrael arevim zeh l bazeh" -- all
Jews are responsible for each other, say the sages. The principle that Bernie
Madoff so egregiously violated in his crime against Jewish communal
institutions is the very principal that motivates our children to want to right
the wrongs perpetrated by other Jews.
Of this, we can all be proud.
Rabbi Rudolph leaves for Prague and Jerusalem this week as part of a JUF
mission of US rabbis. We wish him safe travels and look forward to hearing
about his trip when he returns.

Religious School
News
Please note this schedule change. February
15th will be a regular Religious School morning
with grades PreK-4 meeting from 8:30-10:30
AM and Grades 5-10 meeting from 10:30 AM-
12:45 PM.
Even though it is cold and snowy here in Naperville, spring is beginning in
Israel. On February 9 we will be celebrating Tu B’Shevat, the birthday of the
trees and in Israel schoolchildren will be planting trees with their
classmates. Every student in our school was given Jewish National Fund
tree order forms to enable you to plant trees in Israel in honor or in memory
of loved ones which will help Israel to continue to bloom. There are more
order forms in the office and the table outside the sanctuary. All tzedakah
collected in February will be used to purchase trees in honor of our
students.
Speaking of cold weather please be extra careful in our parking lot. Due to
snow and ice, it is sometimes difficult to stop your car quickly. Please make
sure you pick up your child or carpool after class at the school entrance
(west) ONLY and either park your car in a designated parking spot or wait in
the pick up line. This door is always locked. If you wish to park and walk in
to pick up your child, you may walk in through the main entrance. The
synagogue has made the decision to keep the inside front doors locked. So
please be patient-ring the doorbell and someone will buzz you in. Please do
not park your car in the driveway in front of the main entrance.
The theme for February is L’avdah U’leshamrah, protecting the
environment. Hashem gave us dominion over the environment and also
commands us to protect and care for it. How many things can and do you
recycle at school and at home? The synagogue is now recycling used printer
ink cartridges, glue sticks and cell phones.
Each month we
donate food to
Loaves and Fishes
just down the road.
Due to the
economic crisis,
their distribution of
food is up 39% in
2009. Before I write
the Religious School
news each month, I
go to their web
page to see what they need the most. Our tzedakah for February will be
cereal (hot or cold) and granola bars that are used for their school-aged
nutrition program. If each family brought in one or two items, we would be
able to help many families. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
School happenings in February are many. The 6th Grade Family B’nai
Mitzvah Program, co-taught by Rabbi Rudolph and me will take place on
Sunday, Feb. 1st, 8th and 22nd. There will be a pizza lunch for 5th grade on
Sunday, Feb. 1 from 12:45-1:45 PM and for 9th grade on Sunday, Feb. 8
from 12:45-1:45 PM. Our 7th and 8th grade Rosh Hodesh: It’s A Girl Thing
will meet on Sunday, February 22 from 12:45-2:45 PM in the Youth Lounge.
Please RSVP for all these events so that we have enough food.

A note from
Ms Robin
The Importance of Our Jewish
Preschool
It is that time of year again. Preschool
registration is now open for the Gan Yeladim
Early Learning Center 2009-10 school year. A
very special community is born with every class that starts out together in
our preschool. The children form bonds that are based in caring, kindness,
and sharing, as they learn and grow together.
But it goes far beyond that. Research tells us that a child’s spiritual
developmental is forming during the preschool years, and most of those
pieces are in place by the time a child is six years old. At the Gan Yeladim
preschool, the children learn about shapes and colors, numbers and letters,
earthworms and plants, and so much more. They learn these things in the
context of a Jewish environment. When we talk about the shape of a star,
we talk about the Star of David. When we learn how an earthworm’s job is
to help make the plants and flowers grow, we talk about Tu B’ Shevat and
Tikkun Olam. When we make calls to our friends who are sick and unable to
be in class that day, we learn about the mitzvah, Bikur Choleem. In this way,
Jewish connections are seamlessly integrated into our daily curriculum.
We learn about the other Jewish holidays as well as Jewish songs in Hebrew
and English, as well as Jewish customs, and traditions. What makes this
even more special is when other members of our Jewish community come
into our classroom. Throughout the year many individuals visit to sing songs
with us, read stories, play blocks and puzzles on our big blue rug, blow the
shofar, make kippot, donate toys and books, fix our climber, talk about their
professions, and play musical instruments. Not only do these treasured
moments enrich our program, they let the children know that they are part
of a much bigger whole, a community beyond our Gan Yeladim preschool
room. The children begin to understand that they are an integral part of the
Jewish community. Our children become strong and secure in knowing that
they are cared about by so many, as their emerging Jewish identities grow
with these
intangible, but
priceless gifts
that are given to
them.
These are just
some of the
many reasons
why we encourage families with children ages two through five yrs. old to
enroll their children in the Gan Yeladim Early Learning Center(ELC). The Gan
Yeladim ELC is licensed by DCFS. Registration packets with detailed
information about all of the programs listed are available in the CBS office.
We are pleased to announce that tuition rates have not increased for the
2009-10 school year. You are also welcome to come and visit one of our
classrooms at any time! I am also available to answer any questions.

Dinner Dance honors volunteers
Move over Hollywood, the real party is at CBS in Naperville. This past
November over 200 members and special guests donned their finest attire
and joined us for an evening of celebration. The celebration was to honor
five volunteers who have gone well above and beyond the call of duty in
their support of Congregation Beth Shalom:
Joshua Weikersheimer (aka R’Av Yo)
Russ Klem
Yonah Klem
Bernie Newman
Judi Newman
Party-goers enjoyed Hors d'œuvres, a
silent auction, a wonderful dinner
and plenty of dancing. In addition to
providing a well deserved “thank you” to these special people, we also
raised over $19,000 for Congregation Beth Shalom.
The dinner dance provided a glimpse into the heart of the CBS community -
coming together, volunteering, gratitude, and support. That is what makes
Congregation Beth Shalom the unique place that it is.
For those of you who want to re-live the moment or those who want to see
what you missed, Toni Reiss did a wonderful job capturing the event in
pictures. You can view or purchase pictures or find out more about Toni
Beth photography at:

Cantor Hasha celebrates 13 years of
magic!
On January 31, over 150 people “raised the roof” to honor Cantor Hasha’s
13 years with CBS. Hasha lined up an incredible array of musicians who took
us on a magnificent musical journey. The music spanned cultures and
genres but was held together by a common thread of appreciation, passion,
and love. Hasha has brought that to our community for the past thirteen
years, and that’s what she and her musical friends brought that night.
The evening was full of highlights and great moments. Yet none brought
the audience to their feet like Hasha and Rabbi Rudolph’s Jewish-inspired
version of “Anything you
can do I can do better”.
Despite the tongue in cheek
competitiveness expressed
in the lyrics, the song
showed a true bond
between two consummate
professionals.
The music ended but the evening continued with a “bat Mitzvah” style
chocolate and dessert reception. The social hall was transformed into a
magical space where we had the opportunity to thank Hasha for all that she
has done and all that she has been for this community.
Like the dinner dance, the Cantor’s concert gave us a reminder about what a
truly extraordinary community we have. From the people who lead us to
the volunteers who poured their hearts into making every detail perfect, we
once again brought out the best that Congregation Beth Shalom has to
offer.
Joanne Spyridakos-Hansen of Joanne’s Photography captured the event.

Passover is coming before you know it, so don’t miss the opportunity to
learn to make macaroons (and more) before the holiday. Join Chris Igo in
the CBS kitchen on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at 11:15 am. for a fun and
instructive class on “Macaroons and Other Passover Treats”. Chris will
demonstrate and teach how to make your own macaroons and, possibly,
matzo toffee, flourless chocolate cake, meringues, sponge cake, and layer
cake. If time permits, Chris will discuss adapting your favorite recipes for
Passover. Don’t delay in signing up for this terrific class.
Several Adult Education offerings continue at CBS. Cantor Hasha Musha
Perman is teaching an Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah class, culminating in a B’nai

CBS Security Committee Update. CBS' Security Committee has begun its work to review and improve
security plans and procedures at our synagogue. You may notice some new
improvements to our building and some new security procedures in place at
our facility. While there is no specific threat against our synagogue, it is
prudent to always review and update our security procedures. Our
committee members are working diligently to update our physical security
and to create new plans to cover weather and other emergencies. In the
coming months you will see these implemented and practiced with our
staff, members and students.
We ask for your assistance in this project.
• Please do not prop open any outer doors of our facility.
• Immediately report any suspicious activity or packages to
synagogue staff, leadership, or law enforcement.
• Lastly, if you have expertise in law enforcement or security, we
could use your help in our security committee. Please contact
Stephan Chriqui at boardsecretary@napershalom.org to offer your
assistance.
Thank you for being aware and helping to keep our congregation a safe
institution for all our members and their children.
CBS Annual Campaign nets over $31,000
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this year’s annual
campaign. Between our member donations and the generous matching
donations, we’ve made over $31,000. We appreciate everyone’s generosity
in supporting our synagogue and our community.
Announcing the
“People Of The
Screen” Club
Let's face it, although we are the
people of the book, sometimes a
novel can be daunting. That's why
movies were invented, right? So, in
the spirit of reconstructing (I know
we are independent, but give me a little literary license), we are launching
the People of the Screen club. People of the Screen will meet the third
Saturday of each month (except June, July, and August) for an evening of
movie watching and fun. Admission is $4.00 to cover rental fees and
refreshments. The movies will vary in genre and release date so hopefully
there will be something for everyone. Here is the tentative schedule for this
year.

targeted for children who can read English well and are beginning to learn
Hebrew (typically 3rd grade, though younger children do attend). Students
in first grade and above may attend without an adult, though adults are
welcome, space permitting.
Junior Congregation Shabbat services begin at 10:30 a.m. in the youth

discuss how they are interpreted and followed and made relevant in today's
world, from liberal, conservative, and orthodox perspectives. We will not be
using one specific text, but everyone is encouraged to bring in their favorite
chumash or other Torah commentary, or use a text already available in the
CBS library. Alternatively, the following two books are suggested: The 613
Mitzvot: A Contemporary Guide to the Commandments of Judaism, by
Ronald L. Eisenberg, or The Concise Book of Mitzvoth: The Commandments
Which Can Be Observed Today, compiled by The Chafetz Chayim.
Whether you can come regularly or only drop-in occasionally, join us for the
energizing discussions and the joy of learning. You don't need to have been
present from the beginning of this topic to join-in whenever you can. For
more information contact Bernie Newman 630-357-4544 or

Monthly Meditation: The Sages used to meditate an hour before services to
prepare themselves for prayer. On the fourth Friday of the month you can
do the same at 7:15 pm in the Library, with Jewish Meditation Teacher
Yonah Klem. Yonah will give a brief teaching and then we will meditate
about 20 minutes. Beginning and experienced meditators are welcome.

Notes from Jekabplis
Dear Katya,
Enclosed is a list of the people
who were given help with their
utility bills.
In the name of our entire
community we thank you
deeply for your help.
As of January 1,2009, all of the utilities were raised by 50%,This expense
(bill) comes to us and is incommensurate with our pensions. Half of our adult
children (of the pensioners) have lost their jobs.
Yesterday in Riga was a large forceful meeting where people are tired of
what is going on and they went into the streets to call for a change of
authority.
Our people already don't use the phones or their Televisions since they can't
afford them. If they pay for the phones and television watching, then there
is no money to pay for the apartment rentals and then can be evicted
Well so this is our new year of 2009--not a happy one.
We understand that now it is hard everywhere and that for you to be able to
help our people we again thank you very very much.
Respectfully,Rays Legkodmova and Freida Minsker
Raya is on the right and Freida is on t`he left
