Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) was the

foremostcomposerand ambassador I tango

music, who carried the slgnature sound of

Argentina to clubs and concert halls around

the world.

Piazzollawas born in 1921 n Mar del

Plata,on the coast outh of BuenosAires,but

lived in New York City from 1924 to 1937 ln

New York the young Ptazzolla uned into the

vlbrant jazz scene and bandleaderssuch as

Duke Elllngton and Cab Calloway. t age12,

he received his first bandoneon, a type ofbutton accordion ha t is the principal vorce

of tango, and began playing music from the

classical repertoire. Soon after his family

returned to Argentina in 1937, Piazzolla

joined the popular tango orchestra of Anibal

Tioilo and-while sti1l a teenager-estab-

lishedhimselfasa talented andoneon layer

and arranger.

In Argentina, Piazzolla continued to

study classicalmusic, oo,wlth the composer

Alberto Ginastera and others. In 1954,

Piazzolla'scomposition "BuenosAires" won

him a scholarship ro study in Paris with

Nadia Boulanger,who encouragedhim to

find his own voice by tapping into his

passion for tango. Back in Argentina in the

late 1950s, Piazzolrla id just that, laying the

groundwork for what become known as

tangonuelo-r.ew tango.

In 1960 he formed his seminalgroup

QuintetoTangoNuevo, eaturingbandoneon

alongside iolin, guitar, piano, and bass. n

lhe ensuingyearsPiazzol la' 'music ncreas-

ingly used dissonance, metrical shifts,

counterpolnt,and other techniques nspired

by modern classicalcomposition and jazz

orchestras. In Argentina, where tango is a

source of national pride and rdentity, some

tango purists were incensedby these radical

departures from tradition, and ln the late

1960s even Argentinas military governmentcriticized Piazzolla br being too avant-garde.

Piazzolla left behind a huge body of

mu: ic-more than 750 works-and classic

recordingssuch as Adiris Nonino and Tango:

Zero Hour, as well as collaborations with

artists as diverse as poet/author Jorge Luis

Borges (El Tango), azz vlbraphonist Gary

Burton (The New Tango), and the Kronos

Quartet (Five Tango Sensations). n 1986,

Piazzolla's music was featured in the

Broadway hit Tango Argentino. In 2001

AmadeusPresspublished AstorPiazzolla:A

Memoir,the remarkable life story (as told to

journalist Natalio Gorin) of one of the 20th

century's rue musical iconoclasts.
