The Way It Was...Tweniy-Five Years Ago 1943

From The Star, July 29. 1943The third annual ladies’ baseball

game will take place at 4 o ’clock on Sunday afternoon, at the Maidstone Club, between Elise Yawkey's Maidstone Red Sox and Ruth Maguire’s Maidstone Yankees.

The Red Sox lineup and batting order includes: Elise "Pete Fox” Yawkey, rf, captain; Joan “Tex Hughson" Aldrich, pitcher; Ann “ Ulysses Lupin" Harvey, lb; Helen “Jim Tabor” Cordier. 3b; Pat "L. Newsome" Church, ss; Valerie "Johnny Partee” Willis, c; Nancy "Paul Cullirson" Lloyd, If; Marianne "Mike Michorvich” Dean, cf; Pat "Mike Rhyba" Hopkinson, sf; Linda "Bobby Doerr” Scheerer, 2b. . .

The most important break in the war for the United Nations thus far came this week from Rome with the report of Benito Mussolini’s resignation. . . The entire war picture is one that justifies supreme confidence in ultimate victory for the Allies and for the people of the Axis na-

tions but black despair. . .

It’s sticky and hot and horrid. The only consolation is that it’s so much hotter and stickier and everything else that’s disagreeable, in several other places we might mention. Here, there’s always the beach. If you can’t get to it, you at least know it's there; cool, and clean, and bracing.

FROM AUSTRALIA a V-mail letter from Leonard Lester told about the meeting he had had with Lieut. Comm. McClelland Barclay, and that letter was a hard one to read for it reached East Hampton a day after Barclay had been reported missing by the Navy Department. “Mac" was a great fellow, always doing favors and nice things for other people. . .

NEW UNIFORMS SOON . . .Robert Mulford, Michael Smollin and Anthony Moltisanti leave Monday to enter the Army at Camp Upton. . .

Bridgehampton: William C. Esp has purchased from the Beckwith estate the small store building that has been located on their property on Lumber Lane, and the building has been moved to the western part o f the village, where Mr. Esp has opened a gasoline and auto oil supply station, with John Esp in charge.

Not in years before has there been such quantities of wreckage washed ashore along the south side beaches as there has been in the last week or ten days. The prevailing south- westers have brought flotsam from the Virginia waters where the German submarines sank so many vessels a short while ago. . .

Brief Notes From Amagansett.

The huckleberry parties have met with wonderful success at Montauk during the past week. The women are helping to win the war by canning all they can, even these smoking hot days.

Mosquitoes are conspicuous by their absence this year. Never before in the history of East Hampton has the absence of these little pests been so noticeable. Whether it is the result of the severe weather we experienced last winter no one seems to know. . .

In years past it has been either rose bugs, potato bugs, mosquitoes, army worms, or some of the many other pests that seem to delight in bothering mankind. . .

Local Paragraphs: Miss Nannie Clamp and brother, of San Antonio, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank Halsey.

Seventy-Five Years Ago . . . 1893From The Star, July 28, 1893

Ed. Note: The issue of Aug. 4, 1893 is missing from our files.

The first real test of the Boynton Bicycle Railroad, which is expected to revolutionize matters of transportation on Long Island, was held at Hagermans on Wednesday of last week, when the car, propelled by electricity, ran over the two miles o f track between there and the Great South Bay at the rate of over 70 miles an hour. . .

News from Amagansett: One of the most terrific thunder storms this place has experienced in several years passed over on Wednesday. The peals of thunder and the lightning flashes were frightful.

During the storm the lightning followed the telegraph wire into the cellar of Rackett & Co.’s store into one of the glass jars of the buttery, breaking the jar.

An East Hampton man who has just learned that he has a third

cousin living in the city of Chicago, has written his “ dear cousin” that he is going to visit with him for the next two months, and mentions incidentally that it is very fortunate for him (his cousin) that he lives so near the W orld’s Fair.

On Friday afternoon last, a whale was sighted o ff this coast, but no attempt was made to capture him. On Saturday morning he was seen at Georgica and a boat put o ff for him, but he made for the sea and escaped.

The Saturday previous to this a whale was sighted at the same place, and an attempt made to capture him, but the bomb lance failing to work properly he was not killed.

It seems a pity that East Hampton’s Main Street should be permitted to have its reputation so injured as is the case this summer. Not a vehicle passes through this thoroughfare but a cloud of dust as large as a meeting house arises in its wake and is wafted by the breeze. . .
