Auteur Theory

• “Auteur” – French for AuthorAuteur theory was first created in the 1950’s by

French cinema critics and directions. Le Cahier du Cinema was their publication that discussed who should or shouldn’t be recognised as an auteur – someone whose work has particular characteristics. The characteristics could be stylistic (micro), structural, thematic or about process.

Francois Truffaut and Andre Brètonwere both French cinema critics.

• Born in Versailles, France May 8th 1963• Michel’s career as a filmmaker began with

creating music videos for the French rock band Oui Oui

Michel was also the drummer

• The style of Michel’s videos for Oui Oui caught the attention of the music artist Bjork, who asked Michel to direct her song

“Human Behaviour”

The collaboration proved long- lasting, with Gondry directing a total of seven music videos for Bjork.
