Situation: Barcelona is sited in Catalonia (Spain).

Surface: Metropolitan area of Barcelona has 636 km2 of surface and a population density of 5,010 inhab/km2.

Population: Barcelona metropolitan area is made up of 36 municipalities and has a population of 3,186,461 inhabitants.

Barcelona

Llobregat river

This is the source of Llobregat river.

Llobregat is one of the most important rivers of the province

of Barcelona.

It has its source in Castellar de n’Hug (Berguedà) and it flows into the Mediterranean sea.

Besós river

Besós is a Catalan river which has its source in Vallès Oriental

region and it flows into Sant Adrià del Besós (Barcelonès).

It is a part of the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

This is the source of Besós river.

Mouth of Besós river

Modernism is a cultural movement in Europe from the ends of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century. It set renewel trends in literature, theatre, architecture, fine art, decoration,

furniture and other objects.

Modernism is one of the main atractions of Barcelona and some of its buildings are declared World Heritage Site by

UNESCO.

The financier Eusebi Güell thought to build a garden city and he charged the project to Antoni Gaudí.

Only two houses were built in the park. It was built between 1900 and 1914.

Nowadays, it is a municipal garden.

La rambla is an emblematic avenue of Barcelona which runs between Plaça Catalunya

(in the city centre) and Port Vell.

It is surrounded by newspaper kiosks, flowers and birds markets, street musicians, coffee shops, restaurants, shops...

La font de Canaletes (the fountain of Canaletes) is one of the most important places of Barcelona. It is sited in La Rambla.

It was inaugurated in the 19th century and it is one of the most visited fountains.

There is a legend that says:

“Who drinks from Canaletes, come back to the city”.

La Boqueria or Mercat de Sant Josep is a municipal market. It is sited near La Rambla.

Apart from being a place to buy all kind of fresh food, it is a tourist atraction.

It is the biggest market of Catalonia, the most varied in food supply and the most visited by tourists.

The Cathedral was built from

13th to 15th century, where

the PaleoChristian

and Romanesque

cathedrals were sited.

The facade is

NeoGothic but the rest

is moderner, from the

19th century.

The mountain of

Montjuïc has a top of

184,8 m of altitude.

The magic fountain of Montjuïc is the most important element of a group of lights and water, which includes

waterfalls and ponds.It was built by Carles Buïgas in 1929.

LA SAGRADA FAMÍLIASagrada Família is one of the most known buildings of Modernism in

Catalonia.

It is a symbol of Barcelona.

It was designed by Antoni Gaudí but it is still under construction.

It has 144 m high

distributed in 38 floors.

It is the 3rd highest

building of the city.

It is illuminated

at night (the facade has

4,000 luminous

mechanisms).

Agbar tower is a

skyscraper designed by

French architect Jean

Nouvel.

It was inaugurated on the 16th of September in

2005.

Port of Barcelona is a seaport, industrial,

commercial port and fishing port.

This is one of the main industrial ports and the

biggest port of cruises from Mediterranean sea.

Columbus monument is one of the most famous statues of Barcelona

city.

It was built in 1888 by Gaietà Buïgas in honour of discoverer Cristopher

Columbus.

OLYMPIC PORT OF BARCELONA

The Olympic Port of Barcelona isa leisure harbour sited in front of

the Olympic Villa.

It was built in 1991 by the following architects: Oriol Bohigas, Josep Martorell, David Mackay and

Albert Puigdomènech.

In 1992 sports sailing Olympic Games were celebrated in

Barcelona city.

La Mercè is a popular festival with a program focused on Mediterranean culture: street arts, passacaglia, concerts, traditional dances (sardanes), human towers, firework

displays...

This festival lasts 5 days aprox. This year La Mercè was celebrated from 23rd to 27th of September.

Many popular festivals are celebrated in Barcelona each year.

Some of them are celebrated in all the city but others are only neighborhood celebrations.

The most important festivals are St. George’s Day (on the 23rd of April) and La Mercè (around the 24th of September).

El Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya

(National Art Museum of

Catalonia), also known as M.N.A.C., is a museum of art sited in Barcelona.

It houses all the Catalan art

disciplines, from Romanesque to the

20th century.

The Egyptian Museum of Barcelona is an

institution of cultural and educational

interest and it belongs to Fundació

Arqueològica Clos. The permanent

collection and constant temporary exhibitions

make it as a referent of archaeology and of the

Egyptian world.

Camp Nou is the stadium of Barcelona

Football Club.

It was inaugurated on the 24th of September

in 1957.

It has been remodeled since to be one of the

best stadiums of Europe. Nowadays, it

has a capacity of 98,934 spectators.

Barça players have won many important

competitions.

The colours of the equipment are blue

and deep red.

Barça is one of the best

football teams in the

world.
