What is “Why Underneath The Why”• Why does a client see a coach?

• When a client comes to you, they are stressed, stuck, frustrated, upset, at a crossroads, feeling defeated or hopeless or overwhelmed – something is occurring in their health that they DON’T want.

• And it’s painful enough for them that they’re willing to talk to a stranger to ask for help (that’s a BIG deal!)

• They come to you saying “I WANT __X__” – a smaller body, a calmer tummy, more energy, to learn how to eat healthy whatever it might be… “Just tell me WHAT to eat!!!”

What is “Why Underneath The Why”• And you could just give your client a checklist of healthy foods (we’ll provide one for you in

BHC), but it likely won’t do much good in the long run.

• Why is that?

• Because the client DOES want __X__ (a smaller body, a calmer tummy etc). AND they want something MORE They want what they think X will get them.

• We call this the Big Motivating Factor, or “The Why Underneath The Why”

What is “Why Underneath The Why”• It’s the greater desire that your client has for themselves and for their lives than the

“smaller” thing that they want right now.

• Masterful coaches with long waiting lists of eager clients know how to uncover the client’s “why underneath the why” – at BHC, we call it the Big MoFA (for Big Motivating Factor)

• CLIENT: I want to look amazing in my bikini this summer.

• COACH: So you want to look amazing in your bikini this summer. What’s important about that for you?

• CLIENT: I want to feel hot and confident at our swim club; I haven’t felt that way in a while.

• COACH: So you want to feel hot and confident at your swim club and you haven’t felt that way in awhile. What will having that do for you?

• COACH: Absolutely – I’ll tell you exactly what to eat. These questions just help me figure out what that will be. Thank you for answering them – you’re doing this perfectly. So what if you did know what feeling hot and confident at your swim club will do for you?

• CLIENT: Oh, well, I guess I would feel like I was sexy again.

• COACH: Great. So you’d feel like you are sexy again.

• CLIENT: Exactly.

The client started out with wanting to look great in a bikini this summer, but when the coach dug deeper to uncover her “why

underneath the why”, or Big MoFA, she discovered that what her client REALLY wants is to feel connected to her husband.

(…and chances are good that she’s not feeling very connected to herself)

One of the reasons we might DENY that we have a desire is that we believe that in order to get that desire, we’re going to have to

that you have the desire in the first place.

• Is denying the gifts of the universe! It’s actually resisting the goodness that life has to offer!

• One of the beauties of being human is that we can make it all better.

• It doesn’t mean we’re ungrateful for what we have now, but we do get to expand the goodness.

Some people deny or suppress their desires because they think having desires is selfish or greedy or they believe that someone

else will lose out.

Another reason… You worry what your husband, wife, partner, child, parents or friends will think of you and if you have your

desire fulfilled!
