Write a Book in a Day
On Wednesday 25th August 2021, students from Bellingen High School will write a book in
one day in the Library for children’s cancer research. This year we have 11 teams participating.
One of our Write a Book in a Day teams, the ‘Book Beasts’ have already raised $1,436 towards
childhood cancer research.
If you would like to donate and support
a team at Bellingen High School, please
check out the link below to the online
sponsorship page:

Our students are happy to accept
donations of any size for this very
worthy cause.
Author Webinar
Year 7 and 8 students participated
in an author webinar, ‘Writing
about our diverse history with
Nadia Wheatley’.
The event was held on Thursday
5th August at 11:30am and many
schools throughout Australia
joined in to hear Nadia Wheatley
give insights into the process of
writing.
It was an invaluable workshop for
the students that will be participating in the Writing a Book in a Day fundraising event.
Remember to donate to support those students and the research into children's cancer
research (see front page article). Thank you to all those of you who have already generously
donated to this worthy cause.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data
on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate
in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data
on School Students with Disability (NCCD).
The NCCD process requires schools to identify
information already available in the school about supports provided to students with
disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act
1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines
(2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
• year of schooling
• category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
• level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching
practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
• formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability
in schools
• consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
• develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to
improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan
more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in
any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a
way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality
of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the
collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these
matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy
(https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal
(https://www.nccd.edu.au).
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

Successful Seniors News for Year 11 and 12
Trial Exams are upon us! The
next two weeks will be taken
up with Trial Exams for Year
12. Year 12 students need only
attend school when they have
an exam but a couple of
friendly reminders:
• The exam timetable
received by each student
indicates exam start times
and students should be
outside their exam room 15 minutes before exams start – this helps ensure everyone
prepares calmly and with everything they need.
• Our exams are supervised by external invigilators who will follow HSC rules and
conditions – it is worth taking a moment to review those conditions (they are on the
back of the timetable) so that students are well prepared … for example, only clear
see through pencil cases can be used and you cannot use your ‘smart watch’ to keep
track of time!
• Students are very welcome to use the Study Space before or after exams to prepare
and Year 12 staff will still be available during timetabled class time to answer any last-
minute queries.
We know there has been a lot in the media and from NESA over the past two weeks
about changes, or possible changes, for the HSC – some assessment due dates as well as
the exam dates have changed. We check advice each day and the information in the
Senior study has been updated. We will communicate all official changes to students.
Often the best we can do as learners is focus on those things over which we have control
… For the next two weeks, students can shut out the social media chatter and have
complete control over their preparation for their Trial Exams!
It was fantastic to see so many Year 11s participating in the Introduction to Study Skills
Workshop on Wednesday. After a shared lunch we learned about the failings of
multitasking if ducklings are crossing the road, how far you can stretch a plastic brain,
how close Facebook is to a serious drug habit and how to waste 97% of your time
reading over your notes. This session was a broad introduction to why and how we
study and revise as we do, and students should look out over the next two terms for
some more specific follow up sessions designed to improve revision and support
preparation through Year 12. Great job Year 11!

Year 10 Subject Selection
Thank you to students and staff

Year 11
Most of our Year 12 2022 jackets
have arrived and students are
looking good (and warm!)!!
We apologise for the delay due to
CoVid with the smaller sized
jackets, which will hopefully arrive
this week. Thank you for your
patience.
Year 12
Please remember most applications for tertiary study in 2022 close at the end of
September. While this may seem like a long way off, it is best to apply sooner rather
than applying at the last minute when students are busy with exam revision and end of
term activities.
Upcoming important dates:
Friday 13th August - University of Wollongong - Early Entry applications close.
Friday 20th August - Macquarie University, Leaders and Achievers - Early Entry
applications close.
Wellbeing Support - don't forget it’s on Wednesdays at lunchtime with Magda
and Sandy in F9.
Free Whitecard Course – Last Chance!
If you are 16 or over, there are a few places left on this course which is happening in
our school Library on Friday 13th August. Enrolment forms must be returned to Mrs
Gorman by this Monday 9th August.

Year 12 Hospitality
Year 12 Hospitality had their final Practical Assessment
Task on Thursday 29th July - Winner Winner Chicken
Dinner! They prepared, cooked, and presented a
delicious 3 course meal for 4 guests - Jenni (Ab
Education), Mr. Core (HSIE), Sissiel (Admin) and Jade
(Library). Here are some photos to make you hungry.
Well done girls (Tayla, Tilly and Shannan) for your
dedication and efficiency throughout the day.
Thank you Jade for the photos.
Also thank you to Nelli, who has recently completed the
amazing Gumbaynggirr Bush Tucker artwork in Jenni's Cafe.
During the function and the lesson prior, we had a number
of Year 10 students observe our Hospitality classes.
We look forward to a fantastic Year 11 Kitchen Operations class in 2022.

Garden Update
Every garden is now planted with Snow Peas. There will be a massive crop this year with
students building some great structures for the plants
to grow on. The students are learning about plant
density and making real decisions about thinning out
their plants.
The sprinkler system is now fixed, making it easier to
maintain moisture levels over the weekends.
The next task is planting many types of lettuce and
spinach, ensuring every
garden is full of greenery for
the remainder of this term.
A happy gardener, a calm
student.
Come on Milo (the Sheep)
We are all waiting on Milo, the very pregnant
ewe to give birth – she’s craving oranges and
looks like she will have triplets. So far, we
have 15 cute lambs. The students wish there
were more girls. The current lamb count is 12
boys and 3 girls.
The lambs are on leads daily and very well
cared for by the students. The ewes have
already worked out when they are fed, we
lead their lambs and train them to become
independent from their mother. They seem to
be very happy with that arrangement.
Three lambs were rejected by their mums and are being bottle fed. They are being looked after
during the day by keen students in class and taken home on the weekends. The sheep now
follow everyone around and act more like puppies then sheep.
Well done everyone.
Chickens jump out of incubators
Over 100 Silver Pencil Wyandotte eggs were
set in the farm incubators and have started
hatching out. This year our hatch rate is nearly
60% so we are expecting a lot of chickens.
Our aim is for 300 chickens from hatches.
The incubators will be set again on Monday
9th August with an expected hatch date of
Monday 30th August. There will be a fourth
and final hatch before the emphasis turns to
growing the 2022 Royal Easter Show
Champions.
Silver Pencil Wyandottes will be on sale from
December.
Chirp Chirp Chirp
The Year 7 Science Chicken Project
Yes. Even more chickens. Every year
Year 7 Science classes participate in the
chicken project. The chickens are
scheduled to arrive next week. There
will be brown, black, white and silver
chickens involved in the project.
Every student will learn how to safely
handle chickens. They will also learn
about commercial egg production,
poultry reproduction,
growth and nutrition.
Can’t wait for the
chickens to arrive!
Year 8 Science Farm Visits
All classes are visiting the farm as part of their science program. Students are currently studying
mass and classification. Spending quality time weighing chickens and leading lambs fit well into
their study program. The most important thing, students learning how to appreciate the beauty
of farm animals.
Year 8 Science - enjoying and learning.
Year 9 Agriculture
The focus for the next few weeks is to have everyone pass the Bellingen High School tractor
licence examination. Some students are always a little worried and we do our very best to calm
their nerves.
Every student is instructed on tractor operations and safety. When they seem happy to move
on, they then learn how to operate the PTO and use the spreader to fertilise the Ryegrass
paddocks.
Both Year 9 classes continue to work with cattle, sheep and our very famous Silver Pencil
Wyandottes. They are also managing their raised gardens.
Busy times!
Year 10 Agriculture
All students have invested a lot of time planting and building structures in their “Great Pea
Challenge” raised gardens. This week everyone learned the difference between organic and
inorganic fertiliser and made their own choice on which type to use.
All students drenched and paraded cattle, learning that dose rates are directly related to the
weight of the animal. We also put the lambs on leads and trained them to eat crumbles.
An enjoyable fortnight.
Year 11 Primary Industries
Every student is working towards completing Cluster 5,
Healthy Livestock, this week. They then move onto Cluster
8, Provide Feed and Water to Livestock, which should be
completed by the end of Week 6. They are working on
their tractor skills and drenching the Red Poll herd and all
the sheep.
Lots to learn and do.
Year 12 Primary Industries
One week away from the HSC Trial Examination. The students are busy revising work covered
in class and trying to do the very best that they can do.
Good luck, Year 12!
