2.9 Nitrogen Cycle Class Notes

The Nitrogen Cycle

•All organisms need nitrogen.

Nitrogen Cycle

Nitrogen gas makes up 80% of the atmosphere. However, plants and animals cannot use this form of nitrogen.

Let’s Practice…

1.Do organisms need nitrogen?

2.Can plants and animals get nitrogen out of the air?

3.What percentage of the air is nitrogen?

Nitrogen Cycle - B

AA

BB

CCDD

EE

Bacteria that live on the roots of some plants take in the nitrogen gas and use nitrogen fixation to convert the gas into usable nitrogen.

Let’s Practice…

1.Which organism is able to take in nitrogen from the air?

2.What process do they use to convert nitrogen gas into usable nitrogen?

Nitrogen Cycle - C

AA

BB

CCDD

EE

Plants absorb nitrogen from the soil.

Nitrogen Cycle - D

AA

EE

Animals get their nitrogen from eating plants and other animals.

Nitrogen Cycle - E

CCDD

EE

When plants and animals die, their nitrogen goes back into the soil.

Let’s Practice…

1. Where do plants get nitrogen?

2. How do animals get nitrogen?

3. What happens to nitrogen when plants and animals die?

GP1

How does the tree in this diagram get nitrogen?

GP2

Can the deer in the picture get nitrogen gas from the air?

GP3

Where can it get nitrogen?

GP4

What happens during nitrogen fixation?

GP5

What happens to the nitrogen in plants and animals after they die?
