• Your job is to create a volunteer experience that meets the needs of your volunteers.

• Use what you learn in your volunteer recruitment efforts.

• The more connected volunteers are to your mission, the more likely they are to continue volunteering AND donating!

• Tell your story; make it personal.– Open or close meetings with a mission moment.– Include a vignette about a client in volunteer

recruitment communications.– Make sure to include a mission moment in all of

your events.

– Are there legal forms or waivers? Put them on-line and ask folks to fill them out ahead of time.

• Easy to get there.

– Maps, directions, signage. Test Google maps.

• Easy to get the job done.

– Be prepared.

• Do your homework!– Check out the company’s website; learn what issues and

causes they support and what they are already doing in the community.

• Meet with the volunteer coordinator.– How can you help them meet their goals?

• Be organized. Make sure when they come that their employees have a fabulous experience.

• Thank the employees; publicize the heck out the company’s involvement.

• Find out if they have a Dollars for Doers program.

• A word about charging companies for group volunteer experiences.

• Group volunteer experiences deliver value to the companies that participate.

• Planning and executing group volunteer events takes time and resources.

• It’s not unreasonable to request a small planning grant to cover your time and expenses in delivering a fantastic volunteer experience.

• A word of caution: Take a smart and structured approach. -- waive fees for long-standing partners and/orlarge donors.

• Asking someone to volunteer, and don’t have anything for them to do when they show up.

• Failing to deliver on the promise – make sure everyone understands expectations.

• Being unprepared/Not have the necessary supplies ready.

• Not matching the volunteer to the task/Asking a volunteer to do something he/she is not trained to do.

• Not having a rain plan.• Underestimating the importance of safety.• Forgetting to thank volunteers.

• Develop promotions to build your audience.

• Make sure you are using social media to tell your story.

• Post volunteer photos the same day or day

following your event.
