Early LifeHe was born in December on 1875
Raised in New Canton, Virginia
Son of former slavesHe was one of 9 children
His Family His parents were James and Eliza (Riddle) Woodson
His grandparents, father, and mother were all slaves
His mother secretly learned how to read while she was a slave and taught her children how to read as well
Woodson’s Accomplishments
• He was known as the father of Black History Month
• Graduated with honors from Berea College in 1903
• He earned an undergraduate degree and his M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1907
• He founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. (A.S.A.L.H)
• He completed his Ph.D from Harvard in 1912.

He was proven to be one of the most important Black Historians, authors, and social analysts of the 20th century.
Woodson believed that racism was not inherent in human nature.
His Death
Woodson died on April 3, 1950
He died at the age of 74
He was buried at the Lincoln Memorial in Suitland- Silver Hill, Maryland.
