Introduction
• Cave environment
• 3D brush strokes
• Works for both up close and far away views
• “Extension of painting to three dimensions”
Related Works
• Cyber Glove– Schkolne– Move hands through the air
• Body Language User Interface (BLUI)– Brody and Hartman– Tracking wand
CavePainting
• CavePainting is composed of many 3D paint strokes– Individual strokes are layered and arranged in
space to produce a scene
• Several stroke types– Line, ribbon, tube, bumpy tube, trail of any
type of geometry, splat, extrusion, bucket– Artist picks a stroke type to indicate the
general characteristics of the stroke
Interaction
• Goal was ease of use– Not intimidating– Natural
• Take advantage of 3D space– Let user move around like traditional painting
Results
• Users liked…– Ease of use, familiarity– Free movement
• Users didn’t like…– Accuracy– Paint was static– Color limitations
Future Work
• More advanced painting strokes– Textures, animation
• Better tracking– Performance art possibilites
