What is Formula Student?

In a Nutshell

• Engineering competition– 12 month cycle

– 600+ teams worldwide

– It is not a motorsport competition

• Design, Build, Test & “Sell”– Each team is under a fictitious development contract to

produce and demonstrate a “weekend autocross racer” prototype for investors

– Judged in Dynamic and Static events

Formula Student

Events• Statics

– Design (150p)

– Cost & Manufacturing (100p)

– Business Plan Presentation (75p)

• Dynamics– Acceleration (75p)

– Skid Pad – Figure 8 (75p)

– Autocross - One lap (100p)

– Efficiency (100p)

– Endurance – 22km (325p)

(FSG points distribution)

CFS18

• 3rd at FS Austria (17 competing teams). Guaranteed slot for 2019• 5th at FS Netherlands (19 competing teams)• 11th at FS Spain (38 competing teams)

Yes, it’selectric!

CFS18 @FSA

• Since 2002

• CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate)

• Master’s course with a new team every year

• Has about 300 alumni

• Very good results the last four years with combustion (e.g. 1st FSUK 2012)

• But now we are starting to get quick in electric as well!

• CFS18 was Chalmers Formula Student’s fourth electric car built for a competition season

CFS

• Pre-study– 4 weeks – Result: Chosen concepts

• Design– 8 weeks – Result: Full 3D cad model

• Manufacturing– 15 weeks – Result: Fully working car

• Competition preparations– 8 weeks – Result: Well tuned team and well

tuned car

• Competition(s)– 1 week of performing– Result: ?

Project Phases

• Metal workshop–CNC–Lathing–Welding

• Race bay–Assembly and wrenching

• Formula room– Storage

• Regular student facilities–Group rooms–Computer labs

• Extra computational resources–CFD

• Power Electronics lab

Resources

• Mostly in-kind contributions

• Materials

• Tools

• Software

Partners

• Manufacturing facilities, especially for CFRP parts

• Formula Student is popular with industry and employers!

Team Roles

• Project Engineers (Team members)– Takes the course Chalmers Formula Student (15 ECTS)

–Does NOT correspond to work load … But neither does the gain in experience and knowledge

– For 1st year Master’s students and 3rd year BSs students

– For 2nd year Master’s students without MSc Thesis work

– Full year undertaking (Sept-Sept)

• Trainees– 1st-3rd year BSc students

– “See and learn” position

The Course• 3 ECTS in the Autumn, 12 in the Spring• Most team members use the 15 ECTS during the spring

– Autumn: 100% studies parallell to CFS– Spring: 50% studies parallell to CFS

• As the competitions are in July and August it is beneficialif at least a part of the team can test full time duringsummer.

• It is perfectly fine to have a summer job, but it will affectthe type of positions you can take on at the competitionsif you do.

• Examination via project work and written reports.• Weekly meetings and supervision. Few lectures or other

scheduled activities
