CHEMICAL RESISTANCE GUIDE

Fluid Compatibility

Thechartonthefollowingpagesindicatesthesuitabilityofvariouselastomersandmetalsforusewithfluidtobeconveyed.Itisintendedasaguidetochemicalcompatibilitywithinnertubematerialsandassemblylubricantappliedinternally.Thespecificrecommendationsarebaseduponfieldexperience,theadviceofvariouspolymerorfluidsuppliers,andspecificlaboratoryexperiments.

Itmustbestressed,thatthisinformationisofferedasaguideanditisintendedasaguideonlyandisnotaguarantee.Finalselectionoftheproperhosestyle,seal,ormaterialofmetalcomponentsisfurtherdependentonmanyfactorsincludingpressure,fluidandambienttemperature,concentration,durationofexposureandspecialrequirementsorvariationswhichmaynotbeknownbyALFAGOMMA.

Testingunderactualconditionsisthebestwaytoassurechemicalcompatibilityforcriticalapplications.

Theremaybeinstanceswheretheoutercovercouldbeadverselyaffectedbysubstanceswhichwouldnotchemicallyaffecttheinnertube.Conversely,somesubstanceswhichadverselyaffecttheinnertubeofthehosemaynothaveadeterioratingeffectontheoutercover.Whereanexternalcompatibilityproblemmayoccurorforfluidnotlisted,contactKuriyamaofAmerica'sALFAGOMMAHydraulicHoseSpecialist.

Legalandotherregulationsapplicabletothefollowingapplicationsmustbefollowedwithparticularcare:

a)Specialprecautionsarenecessaryingaseousapplications,highpressureinertgases,duetothepotentialvolumeofgaseousfluidinthesystem,unlessthecoverisperforated(pinpricked)

b)Hosestyleswithrubberorthermoplasticcoversarenotsuitableforgasesabove250PSI(1.7Mpa).Thepressuremustnotbereleasedquicklyandthehosemustbechainedorrestrainedtopreventpersonalinjuryintheeventofdamageorfailure.

c)Hoseapplicationsforfurlsorforliquefiedpetroleumgas,butaneorpropanemusttakeintoaccountlegalandinsuranceregulations.

d)Specialhosesaresuppliedforrefrigerants12,22,R134andsomeotherrefrigerants.

e)Thefluidmanufacturer’srecommendedmaximumoperatingtemperatureshouldbescrupulouslyobservedbytheuserforanyspecificbrand-namefluid.Theserecommendedtemperaturescanvarywidelybetweennamebrandsofdifferentfluidcompositionseventhoughtheyfallintothesamegeneric“family”offluids.Exceedingthemanufacturer’srecommendedmaximumoperatingtemperaturecanresultinfluidbreakdown,producingby-productsthatareharmfultoelastomericproducts,aswellasothermaterialsinthesystem.Ifamanufacturer’srecommendedmaximumtemperatureforhisspecificfluidislowerthanthatforthehoserating,itshouldtakeprecedenceoverthehoseratingforserviceusage.Ambienttemperaturesinexcessofthoserecommended,inconjunctionwithmaximumfluidtemperatures,canmateriallyshortentheservicelifeofthehose.
