Sold-out 2014 tour in France, Belgium and Switzerland

At Paleo Festival: 38’000 tickets sold within 8 minutes for this day (festival record)

Matter of concern for the organisation of the festival and the media

Elements of risk

• Number: every ticket-holder for that day of the festival want to see this show (38’000 + guests & staff = 50’000 people at Paléo Festival)

• Density: fan-behaviour = high density expected in the front-of-stage (density)

• Vulnerability: audience profile with a lot a children

• Unexperienced: families not used to mega-concerts feeling uncomfortable into the crowd (unexperienced festival-goers)

• Style of music: dance and french song (unique style), with potentials crowd movements

• …

Potential problems

• Fainting, uneasiness, dehydratation

• Very high density (over-density?), pressure, accident by compression or choking

• Crowd movements: fall, collapse and crush

• Parents reaction : dissatisfaction (can’t see properly), fear, panic (density), …

• Lost children (a lot of)

• …

NB: Difficulty to evaluate the scale and the risk probability -> number of children (at Paléo Festival = free under 12, Vieilles Charrues = free under 8).

• Schedule of the show: 22h30 - 00h00

• 25’000 spectators

• Density : 3 people/ square meter (organiser’s estimation)

• Heavy rain the whole day and during the show (muddy ground)

• Set up a comfort zone for families around the FOH (600 m2 with crush barriers system, 2’000 people capacity)

• No particular incidents identified

Les Vieilles Charrues Festival Stromae concert Friday 18th July

• Schedule of the show: 22:30 - 00h00

• Density: high (no assessment) with crowd movement during the 3 first songs

• Pre-registration system for children under 8 (no free entrance as usual) but still a lot of young people in the front-of-stage area

• No major incidents but several asks for medical assistance during the show (54 people)

• 54 evacuations from the front-of-stage including 10 medical check (festival record = 279 people evacuated, Muse concert in 2004)

ObservationsAll the festival-goers came to see Stromae. Up to 10:30pm, there were spectators everywhere in the festival site, the stalls were crowded and all sitting areas were occupied. Then, a never seen rush to the toilets has been noticed … … and the main stage attracted everybody. Everywhere else: desert zones.
