Columbus believed that the Arawaks were very gentle, the Arawaks said they wanted to cause no harm and wanted peace with the Europeans. But the sailors didn’t. The sailors stole from the Arawaks. And many sailors took the Arawaks back to Spain and sold them as slaves. The Arawaks also caught European diseases which their body could not fight and they would die from it. 50 years after Columbus’s arrival nearly all the Arawaks of Hispaniola were dead.
