Robert Besley (1794–1876) was an English typographer, creator of Clarendon (typeface) in 1845 and the Lord Mayor of London in 1869.

&IntroductionClarendon is described as a thick-faced con-

densed type, in capital and small letters, made in many sizes. But Clarendon typeface are a lot

more than just bold condensed letters. To define the clarendon model features even further, we may understand the pattern as a slab serif type with a curve that softens its sharp serifs or as a roman face with the ends of the serifs chopped off. Thus, it is “a cross between roman and slab serifs model.” however, there were some incon-

sistency with the name in the past. Some authors refer to them as “Clarendon” which is more often

used, while the others prefer to use it classical name “lonic”, whichis frequently used in the

newspaper terminology.
