Cognos 8 Multitiered Architecture
• Cognos 8 has a multitiered architecture. It can be separated into three tiers: web server, applications, and data. The tiers are based on business functions, and are typically separated by network firewall.

Cognos 8 Multitiered Architecture
Tier 1. Web Server – contains one or more Cognos 8 gateways which is the typical source for web communications.
Tier 2. Applications – contains one or more Cognos 8 servers. A server runs requests such as reports, analyses, and queries, that are forwarded by a gateway. Components of Application tier include:
Dispatcher – operates services and routes requests. Content Manager – manages storage of all application data
such as report specifications, security, configurations etc… Tier 3. Data – contains content store and data sources.
Content Store – is a relational db that contains data that Cognos 8 needs to operate such as report specs, published packages, and data source connection information, etc…
Data Sources – relational databases, dimensional cubes, files, or any other physical data stores that can be accessed through Cognos 8.

Cognos 8 User Interfaces
Cognos 8 has Web-based and Window-based interfaces.
Web-based interfaces are: Cognos Connection – is the web portal. It provides
a single point of entry for querying, analyzing, and organizing data, and for creating reports, scorecards, and events.
Query Studio – used for ad hoc querying. Report Studio – used to create, edit, and distribute
wide range of professional reports. Analysis Studio – used to explore, analyze, and
compare dimensional data. Event Studio Metric Studio
Window-based interfaces are: Framework Manager – is the metadata modeling
tool for creating and managing business-related metadata for use in Cognos 8 reporting and analysis.
Transformer – is the modeling tool for creating cubes for use in both Cognos Series 7 and Cognos 8.

Framework Manager
• Framework Manager (FM) is the Cognos metadata modeling tool for creating and managing business-related metadata for use in Cognos 8 reporting and analysis.
• Objects you work with within Framework Manager:
• Projects – contains models, packages, data sources, namespaces, and related information for maintaining and sharing model information.
• Model – is the set of related dimensions, query subjects (i.e. tables), and other objects required for one or more reporting applications.
• Namespaces – uniquely identifies an object.
• Package – is a subset of dimensions, query subjects, and other objects defined in a project. A package is what actually gets published to the Cognos portal for reporting and ad hoc querying.
• Query Subject – is a set of query items that have an inherent relationship. They behave like tables in most cases.
• Query Item – is the data element that can be placed on a report.
