Natural Landscapes• Relief: This is the shape of the landforms. • Rivers: A river is a natural watercourse, usually

freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, a lake, a sea, or another river.

• Tributaries: A tributary or affluent is a stream or river which flows into a main stem river or a lake.

• Climate: This is the atmospheric weather of an area over a long period of time.

• Soil: Soil is the layer where plants and animals live.

• Vegetation: Vegetation is a general term for the plant life of a region.

• Fauna: Fauna is all of the animal life of any particular region.

What are mountains, mountain ranges and mountain chains?

• Mountains: a mountain is a tall landform. It often reaches great heights.

• Mountain ranges: A series of mountains alike in

form, direction, and origin.

• Mountain chain: A series of mountain ranges across a continent for a greatdistance.

Important mountain ranges in Comunidad de Madrid

• Sierra de Guadarrama: Is a mountain range forming the eastern half of the Sistema Central. It is located between the Sierra de Gredos in the province of Ávila, and in the province of Segovia. Peñalara is the highest mountain peak.

• Sierra de Gredos: is a mountain range in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, located between Ávila, Cáceres, Madrid and Toledo. It has been declared a regional park. Its highest point is Pico Almanzor, at 2,592 metres.

• Somosierra: Somosierra is a mountain pass in the Sierra de Guadarrama north of Madrid in Spain. It connects the north of the Community of Madrid with the east of the province of Segovia. It has an altitude of 1,434 metres.

What are plains?

• A plain is land near the rivers. That is why they are very fertile.

• Are the plains of the rivers Tajo, Tajuña and Jarama. They are next to a river and very fertile.

• They are plains between the mountains

• The valley of Tajo: this valley is carved on sand, loam and clay in a wide valley that dominates the relief with plateaus and plains.

river. It has 3 main parts: - Up-river. - Mid-river. Is the part that goes through the

plains. - Down river. Is the lowest and final part of the

river.• Channel: is the terrain the river flows through.

• Water flow: is the amount of water that a river carries.

• A reservoir is a natural or artificial pond or lake used for the storage and regulation of water.

Important reservoirs in the Comunidad de Madrid

• The reservoir of Valmayor, in the river Aulencia. It has a capacity of 124.4 hm ³. It was built in 1975.

The reservoir of El Atazar

• It is in the river Lozoya. This reservoir has a capacity of 425.3 hm ³ and represents 46% of the volume stored in the region. It was built in 1972.

The reservoir of San Juan

• It is in the river Alberche. This reservoir was built in 1955 and has a total storage capacity of 138 hm ³.
