Welcome Message
Local Host
Dr. Ricky Ng
Vocational Training Council, Hong Kong
Dear scholars, academics and friends,
A warm welcome to you all.
It is my pleasure to greet and looking forward to meet you in Hong Kong in the conference in
July 2017. This conference in Hong Kong not only provides a platform for researchers,
academics and project managers to exchange and update academic knowledge but also an arena
for international networking.
You may have noticed that that the ecology of tourism has been changing over the last decade,
especially with the advancement of technology. There are increasing online activities that are
related to travel and tourism, no matter it is on budget airline, online hotel booking, shopping
behaviour, consumption and cultural experience, just to name a few. The aforementioned are
only a few issues that would make this conference fruitful and insightful and I am of certain that
this conference will play the role of think tank, enables us to look at the issues in tourism from
different perspectives.
Taking this opportunity, I sincerely hope you will enjoy the conference and have a wonderful
trip in Hong Kong.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Ricky Ng

Abstract
People are living longer. In general, seniors have time, money, and health that enable them to
travel more than younger adults do. So there was a huge of studies in the motives for seniors to
travel over the last 10 years. However, millennials as the largest generation to date will become
the largest tourist group to be served in coming years, so there is a need to study the motives for
millennials to travel because their motives are closely related to their choice of a destination. On
the other hand, Eastern and Western millennials may have significant differences in terms of
their travel motives, so the government in different countries should understand the motives for
both Eastern and Western millennials for developing appropriate strategies to support the
tourism development. There is a common point for Eastern and Western millennials that they are
growing up in the digital age, so they like to read user-generated contents on social media that
include travel reviews. Those traveller-generated reviews highlight authentic experiences that
18
motivate millennials to take a break from city life and visit a destination. Furthermore,
millennials like to refer to online sources when they are planning their vacations. This panel
session will discuss (1) the motives for millennials to travel, (2) the effects of different motives
on Eastern and Western millennials’ travel behaviours, and (3) how smart phones and social
media influence millennials’ travel decisions.

Nature Sciences Keynote Speech
Grand Ballroom (I), 6th floor
13:00–14:30, Tuesday, July 4, 2017
Topic: Pioneering Aviation Education in Hong Kong
Dr. Wong Tsun-tat
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hong Kong Polytechnic
University
Abstract:
Since its opening at Chek Lap Kok in 1998, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has grown
to become one of the busiest airports in the world. In 2016, the airport served 70.5 million
passengers, handled 4.52 million tonnes of cargo and accommodated 412,000 air traffic
movements. With more than 100 airlines connecting to about 190 destinations worldwide, HKIA
is a leading international and regional aviation hub. To meet future air traffic growth and
maintain sustainable growth of Hong Kong’s economy, the Airport Authority(AA) will expand
HKIA into a three-runway system (3RS). If everything proceeds according to the plan, it will
take about 11 years before the 3RS can begin operation. By then HKIA will be able to meet the
forecast traffic demand: 97 million passengers, 8.9 million tonnes of cargo and 602,000 flight
movements a year. The number of direct and indirect employment in the airport will be
increased from the 2016 figure of 63,000 to about 123,000 and from 85,000 to 165,000
respectively in 2030[AAHK, 2017].
While aircraft engineering staff are mainly trained by the three aircraft maintenance companies
or the airlines themselves, there are four newly developed government-funded degree programs
in aviation and aerospace engineering. Since September 2014 Hong Kong Polytechnic
University(PolyU) has offered two 2-year full-time top-up programs for Higher Diploma or
Associate Degree holders in engineering - BEng(Hons) in Air Transport Engineering and
BEng(Hons) in Aviation Operations and Systems - and a full-time 4-year program - BEng(Hons)
in Aviation Engineering targeting for secondary school leavers. About the same time the Hong
Kong University of Science and Technology(HKUST) has launched a 4-year program for
20
secondary school leavers - BEng(Hons) in Aerospace Engineering. PolyU programs are aimed
to impart in-depth academic and professional knowledge to students, and also sharpen their
practical, analytical, problem-solving, communication and leadership skills. The HKUST
program is designed to train students to design, analyze and test aeronautical and aerospace
vehicles and associated technology. Hence graduates from these programs would be expected to
work in the local aircraft or aerospace service companies or manufacturers.
Understanding the take-up of aviation and aerospace engineering opportunities by secondary
students in HK must acknowledge that students are active participants in their degree program
choices – but their choices are mainly affected by factors such as social status, requirements of
degree programs and parental expectations. This paper reviews the HK aviation manpower needs
and the average salary for graduates. The impact of secondary education examination on student
choice and parental influences will be analyzed based on published reports and news. In view of
the relative lower university ranking by comparison with the HKUST, emphasis will be placed
on PolyU’s endeavor in attracting aviation engineering students. According to the 2016
undergraduate admission statistics announced by the Joint University Programs Admissions
System(JUPAS) – the main route for students to apply for admission to government-funded
full-time Bachelor’s degree programs offered by the eight participating-institutions – both
HKUST and PolyU have been successful in attracting the approved number of students in
respect of their aviation and aerospace engineering programs, and entrance qualifications of
these students were similar.
Introduction of Dr. Wong Tsun-tat
Dr T.T. Wong received his MSc and PhD degrees from the UK Loughborough University and
the University of Leicester respectively. Prior to joining the Department of Mechanical
Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University(PolyU) in 1980, he had worked for the
Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department(HKCAD) in the areas of air traffic services, flight crew
licensing and examinations, and flight operations safety. During this period he completed the UK
Civil Aviation Authority Airways and Approach Control Course, the ICAO (International Civil
Aviation Organization) Flight Operations Officer & Government Operations Officer and the
CAA Airworthiness courses. Through the Cathay Pacific Airways Lockheed Tristar Conversion
Course he completed the HKCAD L1011 Technical Examination in 1978. A year after joining
the Mechanical Engineering Department, he was invited as an ICAO Visiting Lecturer in the
Airport Mechanical/Electrical Maintenance program (ICAO Technical Assistance Program in the
Philippines, 1981). In April 2005, he was invited to speak at the Airport Council International –
Pacific Best Practice Seminar & CEO Forum(Beijing) on Risk Modelling.
Dr Wong was elected an Associate Fellow of the UK Society of Licensed Aircraft Engineers and
Technologists in 1977, Member of the Chartered Institute of Transport in 1978, Member of the
21
Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1982, Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1997
and a Founding Member of the HK Institution of Engineers Aircraft Engineering Discipline.
Besides being the Program Leader of PolyU’s Higher Diploma(HD) in Aeronautical Engineering,
HD in Mechanical Engineering and HD in Computer-Aided Engineering, he was the Course
Manager of the FIRST aviation postgraduate program in HK - Massey University’s Master of
Aviation (MAv) program. Participants of this program were senior government officials and
professionals from the HK CAD and the aviation industry, e.g. former Director-General of Civil
Aviation, senior air traffic control officers, senior operations officer, assistant airport general
manager, CAD medical examiner, senior engineers, lawyers (foreign and local), etc. Speakers
for the MAv seminars included world-renowned experts such as Prof. Patrick Hudson (Delft
University of Technology), Prof. Graham Hunt (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University), Prof.
Graham Braithwaite (Cranfield University), Dr. David Pang (CEO of Airport Authority Hong
Kong), etc.
Besides an Assessor for Professional Engineer qualifications(UK Chartered Engineer and HK
Registered Professional Engineer), Dr Wong is a Spokesman for the Royal Aeronautical
Society(Hong Kong) in Aviation Safey and currently an Adjunct Associate Professor of PolyU..
