Think Green!
Everywhere we turn these days, we are reminded of the importance of “thinking green” – to think about nature and how we treat it. We are en-couraged to use compact fluorescent light bulbs, save energy, water, re-
cycle etc.
The color green can also be related to money – as for me, I’m usually
wanting more of it...
Green is the color of spring. We are lucky here in the tropics to be sur-rounded by greenery year round, but it’s a little different green in the
spring; it’s new green. It’s a brighter shade; full of life.
To me, green is the color on my report indicating Clubs that have reached Distinguished status. We have to date a total of 75 Clubs that have
reached Distinguished or higher. CONGRATULATIONS!
You can see the list of all our Clubs which have achieved Distinguished
and higher to date when you turn the pages.
Our goal as a District is to reach 200 Distinguished Clubs. We have some ways to go, but looking at the reports, we are very much on our way and on the right track! Another 67 Clubs have already achieved the goals and now just need to catch up with the membership to receive the ribbon and
bragging rights.
The Distinguished Club Program is the goal for all Clubs to strive towards; it’s the same goal for every Club around the world. The goals are set to make sure that our members are winning; that they are achieving what they came for when they joined. We want to make sure to stimulate all members and there are certainly many different ways to do that. Toast-masters offer many programs, projects and manuals to keep us busy for a
long time.
Are you achieving your goals? Is your Club green?

Wow … what a fantastic weekend of competition!
As I sat next to Vikas Jhingran, 2007 World Champion of Public Speaking, he told me that these were among the
best speakers he’d ever heard at a District Conference. Congratulations to all of our Contestants for not only
making it to the District Conference, but performing so admirably.
On Friday night we had 8 very talented speakers for our Table Topics Contest. In keeping with the theme of the
Conference, “Celebrating Our Nationalities” the Table Topic was: “It’s a Small World”. How would you have
answered?
The Contestants representing their divisions for Table Topics were:
Division A: Christine Cargnoni
Division B: Damien Miller
Division C: Tracy Baker - 3rd place
Division D: Gina Carroll - 2nd place
Division E: Rex Lehman
Division F: Jo Davidsmeyer
Division G: Jane Strong
Division I: Shakera Winters
And the winner is …….. Damien Miller
Saturday night brought us 8 gifted presenters for the International Speech Contest:
Division A: Byron Donalds
Division B: Paul Rutter - 3rd Place
Division C: H. David Braswell
Division D: Nina Potter
Division E: Jim Bussey
Division F: Lorenzo Hubbard - 2nd Place
Division G: Shawn Purvis
Division I: Katina Seymour
And the winner is ……. Jim Bussey
Jim will be going to the Toastmasters International Convention August 10 - 14 in Palm Desert, CA., were he will
be competing in the first of its kind semi-final competition. There will be 81 District winners competing in 9
contests. There will be three contests running simultaneously for three time slots on Thursday. The 9 winners
will compete on the world stage two days later with a brand new speech to see who will be crowned the 2010
World Champion of Public Speaking.
Good Luck Jim!

CALLING ALL FIRST TIMERS
The much anticipated Spring Conference has come and gone and it was good to see all of you there. For those who could not attend, you missed a grand time. The hallways were bursting with excitement as
Toastmasters and guests dressed in their native costumes and came together to celebrate our nationalities.
The weekend of activities and festivities was a great opportunity to meet new friends, catch up with old pals, exchange stories and share experiences that will last a lifetime. The thing that was particularly im-pressive from my perspective was the number of ‘First Timers’ who attended the Conference. I saw first-hand just how excited they were about attending the Conference and most of all how excited they were
about being a Toastmaster.
The First Timers meeting was dynamic! Even though the session was held early on Saturday morning, the room was filled with bright eyes, all eager to participate and showcase their theatrical skills. The meeting was invigorating and the room was highly charged. We were all like babies with candies. We could not get enough of the fun, laughter and togetherness this session provided. Believe it or not, for just for a brief
moment…a few minutes, I actually thought I was a First Timer.
What an awesome feeling! This is the effect I hope all First Timers had in response to a creative meeting designed specifically with them in mind. First Timers from our new District 47 Clubs were all smiles as they walked out of the session refreshed and renewed. If you missed this Conference, I encourage you to
begin making plans to attend the Fall Conference. It will be an experience you will never forget!
I hope to see you there.

In the past, in preparation for the Annual Business Meeting, all Club Presidents would receive a blue envelope with their proxy form to be submitted at credentials during
the International Convention.
Beginning this year, in an effort to simplify the process, reduce costs and minimize the environmental impact, hard-copy proxy forms will no
longer be mailed to each Club President.
Toastmasters International will send the official proxy notification for the Toastmasters International Annual Business Meeting to Club Presidents via e-mail. Using the Toastmasters Web site, Clubs can determine elec-
tronically who will carry their votes:
• The Club can send a delegate to the meeting.
• The Club may assign the proxy to the 2010 -2011
District Governor.
• They may also assign another active Toastmaster
member.
If a Club assigns the District Governor as its delegate, the District Governor in office at the time of the Inter-national Convention will be able to cast the Club’s votes at the Annual Business Meeting. From the Web site, District Governor will be able to see not only which Clubs have assigned their proxies to them, but they can also find out which Clubs have or have not assigned their proxies. For those Clubs who have not submitted their proxies, District Governors will be provided with the Club President’s name and contact information to allow the District Governor to
follow up.

Critical IRS Deadline Approaches
The Internal Revenue Service
(IRS) requires that any United
States-based group failing to file
an e-Postcard will lose its status
as an official Toastmasters club.
If you’re located in the USA, pro-
tect your club! Be sure to read
and follow the information below, which has been
quoted directly from the IRS Web site:
“Late Filing or Failure to File the e-Postcard
If you do not file your e-Postcard on time, the IRS will
send you a reminder notice but you will not be as-
sessed a penalty for late filing the e-Postcard. How-
ever, an organization that fails to file required e-
Postcards (or information returns – Forms 990 or 990-
EZ) for three consecutive years will automatically
lose its tax-exempt status. The revocation of the or-
ganization’s tax-exempt status will not take place
until the filing due date of the third year.
Need additional information?
For more answers, visit the IRS 990-N FAQ page.
Please keep in mind: As of May 15, 2010, it will be
three years. If any club has not filed the 990-N by
that time, they will lose their tax-exempt status.
Toastmasters provides the information and links you
need to file the e-Postcard, such as your club’s EIN
number, on these pages: IRS 990-N Filing Require-
ment for all US Clubs (PDF). Follow the simple steps
and your fellow club members will thank you!

Compassionate Conversation
Our Values
In life there are basic values that we learn and build on as we grow up. These values help to define us and our behavior in our daily lives. Many organiza-tions for young children and teens use these as a foundation. The Josephson Institute calls these val-ues the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship and Responsi-
bility.
As Toastmasters, it is essential for each of us to em-body these values and display them on a daily basis. We should expect these characteristics from our fel-low Toastmasters, family members, and friends. In our journey as Toastmasters we are role modeling these values that define character. I believe that Eleanor Roosevelt was correct when she said, “Character building begins in our infancy, and con-
tinues until death.”
Let’s get more involved in the Youth Program for Toastmasters and make a difference at this level. We can make an impact by example to a room full of
youths who are involved in our program. In the words of Theodore Roosevelt, “I care not what oth-ers think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do. That is character!” Take a
hand and be a guide.
If you know of the birth of a child, pass-ing of a fellow Toastmaster, a “big” birthday or similar occasion, please send a note to our Compassionate Mailbox using this link on the District 47 website
http://toastmastersd47.org
Let us know the name, which Club and address where
we can send the card.

Breakthrough Miami Speech Contest
Wow! Amazing! Fantastic! Inspiring! Educational!
These are just a few words to describe the speeches given by the 7 contestants in the very first Break-through Miami/Youth Leadership Program Speech
Contest on Saturday, April 24, 2010.
Breakthrough Miami is a summer and school year academic program for talented middle and high school students. Everyone at Breakthrough Miami comes to learn, challenge themselves, and have fun. Students take classes in math, science, history and English and experience engaging activities like thea-tre, music, art and athletics. Breakthrough students agree to be a part of the program for eight years, coming every day for six weeks during the summer, 2 Super Saturdays during the school year and to join College Bound once they have completed the middle
school portion of Breakthrough.
The mission of Breakthrough Miami is to assure that all children, regardless of background and means, will have equal access to excellent educational op-portunities and enthusiastic teachers committed to their educational success. The nationally recognized “students teaching students” model will also remain the centerpiece of the program and the Break-through name will continue to stand for excellence
and equity in educational opportunities for under-
served youth.
Last year, Lillian Koziol, DTM, collaborated with the Executive Director, Alicia Rodriguez-Bower, and pro-gram directors, Jamael Stewart and Lauren Kellner at Breakthrough Miami and we offered the first two Youth Leadership Programs in the spring of 2009. Since then there have been 10 Youth Leadership Pro-grams offered and over 150 students have benefited
from the experience.
The Breakthrough Miami/Youth Leadership Program Speech Contest was organized to give those students who have gone through the program an opportunity to gain experience in participating in a contest and showcasing their skills. Each and every one of the students came prepared to do their best. Their par-ents, friends and Toastmasters were all so very
proud of them.
The contestants were Joshua Bonnery, Kiana Reeves, Renee Russo, Jamie Sanchez, Michael Sanchez, Khalil
Wilson and Mya Wright.
First place was won by Mya Wright and second place
by Jamie Sanchez.
In our eyes they are all winners!

Broward County Kudos
Two Broward County em-ployees, Marilyn Hu, sen-ior information technology specialist with Enterprise Technology Services, and David Jess, reference li-brarian at the Pompano Beach Branch, joined Toastmasters International several years ago. They wanted to improve their public speaking skills, but both enjoyed the experience so much that they recently teamed up and taught an eight-hour public speaking class, How to Write and De-
liver Great Speeches.
Hu and Jess became good friends when they joined First Edition one of the 28 Toastmasters Clubs through-out Broward County. They joined First Edition and de-
veloped their leadership skills to eventually serve in elected leadership roles with Toastmasters Interna-tional. “We both believe it is our duty as Toastmasters to help others improve their public speaking skills. When the opportunity was presented to us to facilitate a speech class [for Broward County employees], it was hard to refuse”, Hu said. Plus, Toastmasters offers lots of great resources to improve ones public speaking
skills.
Nine individuals completed their first class, which re-quired each student giving a speech. The attendees worked in small groups and were able to practice dif-ferent aspects of their speech, Jess explained. By the time they gave their presentation before the entire
class, they had practiced it several times.
Next up for the dynamic pair is teaching round 2 to
their peers in July.

Forty flags paraded proudly before us symbolized the unique welcome and leadership aspirations of the Toastmasters Dis-trict 47 Spring Conference on April 16, 2010 in Fort Lauder-dale, Florida. This was my “first timer” extravaganza at a District Conference and it was extraordinary how much infor-mation was presented. Something like trying to drink out of a fully open fire hydrant, simultaneously filling and drench-
ing with new ideas, without drowning.
The District 47 Spring Conference started with Dinner on Fri-day night with all of us dressed in the “Native garb” of our homelands. Some as French men in striped shirts, some as cowboys, some in colorful Bahamian magnificence. It was a
time to laugh and sing.
VIKAS JHINGRAN, the 2007 World Champion of Public Speak-ing, inspired us with his talk “The Missing Masala.” He wove a story of personal success as he described his secrets of speech crafting. His pearl of great price, the spice (Masala) is actually YOU, and your experiences. “Tell a story, make a point” was emphasized repeatedly. It was worth the entire conference just to hear this talk. And the next day was even
better.
A “First Timers” meeting was held on Saturday AM, where we were divided up into five groups, each designated to a coun-try and assigned the task of preparing a two minute presen-tation on the mythical travels of “Kristina” a fellow Toast-master. It was a hoot, but a tease for what the rest of the
day would share.
Twelve one-hour talks filled three hours on Saturday morn-ing. The spectrum of presentations was remarkable and broached the spectrum from basic speech preparation to
Internet sophistication.
Lunch provided an opportunity to celebrate the Communica-tion and Leadership Award of SUSIE LEVAN, a distinguished community leader in Fort Lauderdale. Then VIKAS JHINA-GRAN served us the most delectable dessert with another Toastmaster winning speech on “The Charismatic Speaker,” in which he emphasized the need to 1) Connect with the au-
dience; 2) Surprise the audience with the ending; 3) Do not get stuck on the words, but have your whole spirit present
the talk.
The business meeting was to share budgets, goals, and elec-tions. District 47 is growing so rapidly that several areas/divisions needed a balancing act to serve all of the new member applicants. Once again KRISTINA KIHLBERG ran an
excellent meeting, with voila! Parliamentary Procedure.
The business meeting was followed on Saturday night with another delicious dinner. It was fun to see all the DISTIN-GUISHED TOASTMASTERS Walk (those completing a DTM since the Fall Conference), first accepting with their blue ribbons and gold medallions around their necks and then being con-gratulated by existing DTM’s at this formal dinner. I was re-minded of the amount of work that each had put in to ac-
complish this meeting, and the dinner.
As a first timer it was truly impressive to see the gifts of these speakers. I took notes on each talk, and the gifts dem-onstrated taught me how to change my own presentations. In our Clubs we often have good talks, but these left you gasp-ing for breath at their grace, and intensity. I would recom-
mend going to a District contest for your own education.
My greatest insight was to see RICK FURBUSH, take off his own DTM medallion and ribbon and pass it down to the last Distinguished Toastmaster recipient, as they had run out of ribbons for the new DTM’s, for the DTM awards ceremony. With a new District Gov-ernor like RICK, with a heart to give what it takes to make the Clubs successful, we are going to have a fun year coming. The Future is
Bright for District 47.
Thanks to First Timer JAMES ROWSEY, M.D. for sharing his
experiences at the District 47 Spring Conference last month.
