Security issues occur when a hacker gains unauthorized access to the site’s by exploiting coding vulnerabilities

Privacy issues occur through unwarranted access to private information

Spam and Phishing According to the Internet Crime Complaint

Center (IC3), 3,200 account hijackings have been reported since 2006

Common techniques Spam to promote phishing sites claiming some violation

of SNS terms of agreement needing to be corrected Spam messages from seemingly legitimate “friends”

suggesting video or application to download Seemingly legitimate applications advertised on SNS,

with malicious code or anti-virus software Malicious software that gets access to profile information

to send spam to friends network, instructing them to download the new app or video

Sobering Statistics 64% of SNS users infrequently or never change

their passwords 57% never adjust their privacy settings 21% accept friends requests from people they do

not recognize 64% click on links from other members or friends 26% share files on SNS As a result

Protect against Spam and Phishing Adjust SNS privacy settings Be Selective in who you accept as “Friend” Create groups of Friends to control and limit access
