Attack the Prompt

Prompts are usually divided into 2 parts; the “warm-up,” which provides background and context and the actual prompt itself.

1. Cross out unnecessary words 2. Circle any word that asks you to do something 3. Draw an arrow from each circled word to what it

specifically tells you to do 4. Under the prompt, rewrite and number the circled

words. Next to each word, rewrite what the word asks you to do.

Timed, On-Demand Writing

Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship have been identified as the pillars of character.

Identify which of these pillars you believe is most important. Write an essay in which you explain your point of view. Use specific examples, reasons, and details to develop and support your point of view.

You Try! By the time students enter high school,

they have learned about many moments in history that have influenced our world today. Think about a moment in history you studied and consider its importance. Write a composition in which you discuss a moment in history. Share its importance in today’s world. Be sure to support the moment with details and examples.

Use context clues to make sure you understand the

prompt I believe that responsibility is an

important factor in characters. Why I think so is because, responsibility is what a character must do and be ready for the advantage of the plot and other characters.

Always Plan! (B) Type of writing: argumentative Trait: citizenship reason 1: how others look @ you reason 2: how you view yourself reason 3: benefits hook: You are in the hallway,... thesis: Citizenship is the most important part of your

character because it helps you make decisions confidently

In this context, the “5-paragraph essay” is typically your safest

bet (C) At the very least you need an

introduction, body, and conclusion layout

You need to clearly use transitions

While graders will be more lenient with some conventions errors (spelling,

comma usage,...), they will be less

forgiving of incomplete and/or

unclear sentences. (D)

Make Sense? One important pillars of a character

I think is most important is trustworthiness because in order to have that characteristic, makes you a better person of who you are.

When you feel like you can’t answer the

prompt or don’t want to... Give yourself the best shot by directly

answering the prompt question in the 1st sentence

Provide at least 1 detailed example for support

Wrap up the essay in a clear conclusion-even if it’s only a sentence

Don’t repeat your examples!

I think to be trustworthy is very important because if your close friend tells you something that they don’t want anyone to know, it is always good to keep the secret.

If you want to be a great friend, you have to have trustworthiness because if you don’t, no one will ever tell you anything again.

If someone told you something and you told another person...

When possible, use real-world examples

from current events/issues or from books/history rather than hypothetical or general examples.

The thing is not everyone thinks about fairness anymore. People are treated wrong in factories, sweatshops, stores, restaurants and are bullied all around.

Putting it all together On the student sample, identify at least 2

things the writer did well based on our notes today.

You can highlight, underline, or annotate these points.

Evaluation and Reflection

Revisit your response, and identify 1 thing you did well and 1 thing you will need to fix/remember for the future.
