t is a remarkable s

ancient aquatic world now
a new study sheds light o
n how one of E
arth's oldest reefs
I was formed. R
esearchers have discovered that one of these
reefs now
located on dry land in Nam
ibia w
as built almost
550 m
illion years a
go, by the first an
imals to h
ave h
ard shells.
Scientists say it was at this point that tiny aquatic creatures
developed the ability to
construct hard protective coats and
build reefs to s
helter and protect them in an
increasingly dan-
gerous world. They w
ere the first animals to build structures
similar to n
on-livin
g reefs, which are c
reated through the na
t-ural processes o
f erosion an
d sedim
ent deposition. The study
reveals that th
e anim
als attached th
emselve
s to fixed sur-
faces and to each other by p
roducing natural ce
ment com
-posed o
f calcium
carbonate, to form
rigid s
tructures.
The creatures k
nown as Cloudina built reefs in ancient seas
that now
form
part of N
amibia. Their fossilised remains are
the oldest re
efs o
f their type in the world. Cloudina were tiny,
filter-feeding creatures that lived on th
e seabed during the
Ediacaran Pe
riod, which ended 541 m
illion years ago. Fossil
