You and a partner will teach the class a 30 minutescience lesson appropriate for an elementary level ofyour choice. I will videotape your lesson and digitize it and give itto you the next class. Two weeks after you teach the class you will hand inyour lesson plan and a reflection on teaching theclass. Next Monday, I will model what a 30 minute sciencelesson could look like 3rd Grade.

the importance of leadingstudents through a logicalchain of evidence, of showingthem a variety of phenomenathat can be explained by the
same basic principle, and ofproviding students with achance to put to use the ideasthey have learned. And it isalso how science actually
works: Science is not just factsto be memorized or terms tolearn, but a process for buildingup a picture and explanation ofthe world from evidence.

Four Things to Considerwhen looking at and designing lesson plans:
Engagement
How does it
engagestudents?
Inquiry
How does it
actively involvestudents ininvestigating thetopic?
Closure
How does the
lesson bringeverythingtogether at theend?
Flow
Does the lesson
have coherenceandconnections?
Are there 1-3 bigideas thatstudents walkaway with?

In groups of three (relatively same grade level), finda lesson online.
Critique the lesson in terms of the 4 characteristicswe discussed earlier (Engagement, Inquiry, Closureand Flow).
What changes might you maybe make if you were
teaching this lesson? Or is there anything you wouldkeep that I got rid of? What would influence yourdecisions?

3 things not in pre-prac template: Time (e.g. 30 min), Misconceptions, References
Learning objective
Verb (Not know, understand, learn) + content Students will define that a chemical reaction is Students will analyze data to determine if a chemical reaction
occurred by Examples of science verbs
Define, Identify, Describe
Predict, Design an experiment, Make observations, Collect Data,Analyze data
Create a model, Write a explanation
