EconomicallyDisadvantagedEffortsTowardMeetingRetentionTargets2016 2017Becausestudentswhoareeconomicallydisadvantagedoftenexperiencemoretraumathantheirmiddleclasspeers,OCSaddedthepositionofaSocialWorkerandBehaviorMediationSpecialistinordertoprovidesocial emotionalsupportforstudentsatOCS.Byworkingwiththesetwoprofessionals,studentsareabletoaccessinterventionsnecessarytohelpthembeconfidentandacademicallysuccessful.OCSsponsoredtheCollegeSimulationExperience,aneducationalinitiativeintendedtoimprovecollegeretentionratesforstudentsinpovertybyexposingprecollegestudentstoreal lifescenariosthroughrole playingina6weekworkshop.OCSpartneredwithanumberofcommunityservicestohelpparentsinpovertysuchastheBuffaloUrbanLeaguetoprovideparenteducation,voterregistrationatOCS,familyfunnights,andaninitiativetocelebratestudentsuccessesthroughtheLunchwithLeadersprogram.TheDirectorofCommunityRelationsandOutreachisworkingtodevelopanOracleCultureCrewthatwillbealeadershipprogramforstudents.Thiswillhelpwithskillsthatstudentswhocomefromdisadvantagedhomestypicallylacksuchasresumebuilding,peertopeermentoring,andwillhelpdevelopaschoolnewsletter.

AdditionalEffortsTowardMeetingRetentionTargets2017 2018Buildingonthepreviouseffortsfromlastyear,thefollowingwillbeimplemented.SchoolGuidanceCounselingdepartmentwasrestructuredinordertobetterservestudentswhocomefrompoverty.Previously,counselorsworkedwithcaseloadsdependentuponcohortstatus.Therestructuringwillsplitcaseloadsofstudentsbasedonlastnametothecounselors.ThispartnershipwillalsoincludeNiagaraUniversity.TheDirectorofCommunityRelationsandOutreachispartneringwiththeAssociationforBetterLivingandEducation(ABLE)tobringadditionalcourseelectivestosupporteconomicallydisadvantagedstudents.TwonewcourseofferingsforstudentswillbePositiveActionandCollegePrep.TheDirectorofCommunityRelationsandOutreachhaspartneredwiththeguidancedepartmenttostrategicallyimplementanactionplanaimedtowardincreasingOCSstudentexposuretocolleges.OCSaddedthepositionoftheAttendanceClerkinordertomonitorgeneralandspecificstudentattendancetrendsandworktowardmakingsurestudentsreceivesupportstheyneedandareinschool.OCS’SocialMediaSpecialist’seffortshavebeensuccessfulandsocialmediafollowershiphastripledin16 17.AniPhoneappforstudentsandparentstodownloadwillbecreatedtoincreaselinesofcommunicationforschoolandparents.

StudentswithDisabilitiesEffortsTowardMeetingRetentionTargets2016 2017OCScurrentlyimplementsanintegratedcoteachingmodelastheprimarylevelofserviceforspecialeducationstudents.Thoughnotonlytheonlyserviceprovided,co teachingprovidesbothgeneralandspecialeducationstudentswithheterogeneouslearningenvironmentsinwhichthetwoteacherscanworkcollaborativelyinahighlyintegratedsetting.Asageneralpractice,co teachingpairsalsosharethesamephysicalteachingspaceandhavejointaccountabilityforstudentperformanceoutcomesrelatedtoformalobservations.AdditionalresourceroomserviceareprovidedifrequiredperIEP.Co teachingpairshavecommonplanningtimeandworkcollaborativelywiththeDOI,InstructionalCoach,andCOSItoreceivefeedbackandcoachingontheinstructionalanddifferentiationstrategiesaswellastheirworktogetherasapair.TheCOSIandspecialeducationteachermeetweeklytodiscussstudentswhomaynotbemeetingannualgoalbenchmarksandprovidestrategiestohelpthesestudentsbesuccessful.Thepairsreceivemultipleinformalobservationsandtwoformalobservationstogethereachyear.OCS’sspecialeducationstudents’summativeacademicachievementdataistrackedeveryfiveweeksthroughbothprogressreportandmarkingperiodgrades.Thislongitudinaldataisusedtocreateindividualizedactionplanstoremediateskillsandultimatelyimproveacademicperformanceduringthenextfiveweeks.Currently,allcoreacademicclassesatOCSareco taught.ThisincludesELA9 12,GlobalI,GlobalII,andUSHistory,CommonCoreAlgebra,Geometry,andLivingEnvironment.Themostintensesupportisprovidedduringfreshmanyearwherestudentsreceiveupto208minutesofco taughtinstructiondaily.ItisscaffoldedbackeachyearinaccordancetothepresentIEP.Thismodelenablesstudentstocontinuetoreceivesupportsneededtobesuccessfulwhileallowingformoreopportunitiesforthemtobecomeindependentlearnersandself advocate.
