Kinship with the Resurrection by Roy Pearson
“It is one of the greatest principles of Christianity,” said Pascal, “that that which happened
in Jesus Christ may happen in the soul of every Christian, and if the Christian faith has
affinities with Calvary today, it also has a kingship with the Resurrection. For through the life
and death and resurrection of his Lord the Christian finds the assurance that man is not
sailing in a rudderless craft, that he is not riding in a driverless car, that the heart of the
universe is sound, and that the future of the universe is safe. He finds the confidence that
although evil often builds mighty bulwarks, God always tears them down. He finds the faith
that although goodness often seems to speak in nothing but the still, small voice which is
neither heard nor heeded, God makes of it at last a trumpet drowning out the roar of the
thunder of wrong. The Christian gospel means that history is in God’s hands. He can be
delayed, but he cannot be defeated, and in his own good time he rolls back the stones from the
doors of the man-made tombs of the world and raises from the dead the saviors of mankind.”
A number of years ago, I become the recipient of a library of books from a longtime friend
and mentor. One of those books, published in 1961, is entitled, “Lenten-Easter Sourcebook”
by Charles L. Wallis. With a broken spine, stained yellow pages, and more notes in the
margins than in the text, it is my go-to book for all things Lent and Easter. Each year the
power and significance of God’s work through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus comes
to life through its essays, poetry, and commentaries. This year I am struck by the images from
the essay shared above.
Holy Week is the most significant week of the Christian faith. It is a time to remember the
lengths our Savior was willing to go for us. It is a week filled with images of obedience
overcoming selfishness, hope overcoming despair, and love overcoming death. From the
waving of palms to the passion – Holy Week reinforces the undeniable truth that God’s love
always wins. Always.
As Pearson writes, “God is in the business of rolling back stones from the doors of man-made
tombs” – as a community of faith that is the Good News we proclaim this coming month and
every month. So, as we make our way to Calvary and the cross, through palm processions,
agape feasts, the stripping of the altar, and Good Friday services, remember we are already
Easter people with an Easter message. And as you know, it is a message the world so
desperately needs to hear.
I remain faithfully yours,
Amanda+

O God, who from the family of your servant David raised up Joseph to be the
guardian of your incarnate Son and the spouse of his virgin mother: Give us grace
to imitate his uprightness of life and his obedience to your commands; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen
~ Collect Appointed for Use on the Feast Day of St. Joseph, March 19th
To get right to it, there are three points in this Stewardship Message.
First: at its retreat in January, the 2018 Vestry chose three themes as guides for the
work of the Parish, they being: worship, grow, and serve. It is our intent that every
activity in 2018, and beyond, advances one of those themes. To provide two quick
examples, the Delaplane Strawberry Festival supports our ‘serve’ theme, and under
‘grow’, we are planning a capital campaign. (More on that at a later date.)
Anything that does not align with one those themes will not be pursued. The three
themes were chosen to move forward the call adopted in 2016, “A time to build
up!”
Second: in our 2016 Stewardship Campaign, three approaches to service taken from
the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25 – feeding, clothing, visiting -- were presented to
the congregation. Based on Rob Porter’s message to the congregation on ‘feeding’,
and your responses, for our 2017 Stewardship Campaign, we focused specifically
on serving the northern Fauquier County community through feeding. Thoughts on
how to develop that ministry have matured since then, and we’ve decided to “go
big.” Kathy Baumgartner (who clearly is not writing this message) had the vision of
coordinating with county aid agencies, local churches, and schools to determine
where the need is, how best to address it, then go at it. (Again, more on that later.)
Third: Sunday, March 25th is the beginning of Holy Week, the holiest period of the
Christian calendar. During that week, we take an emotional ride that begins with the
Palm Sunday triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem; continues through His
Maundy Thursday final supper with his disciples, followed immediately by his
betrayal; moves suddenly to his crucifixion on Good Friday; then seems to hover in
a stall for a day on the Saturday that follows. It is a time for reflection, and several
important worship services will take place during the week. (More on those in this
newsletter.)
The above have one common connecting point: for all to succeed, we need your
support and participation. None of the above can thrive simply as a vestry or
committee activity. All are parish activities by their very nature. And, don’t feel as
if you have to wait to be asked to contribute. Amanda+ and Vestry members always
enjoy hearing from volunteers. (The names of the latter are at the back of each
Sunday’s bulletin.)

BARN DANCING IN DELAPLANE
Emmanuel’s first official Barn Dance was a huge success!! There were about 50 participants of all ages and so much fun was had by all! A big thank you goes out to the
Cabin Raiders Band: Jason Ashby, Rhys Jones, and Kevin Roop; and Delaura Padovan, our caller. We hope to schedule another of these dances in the near future, so
stay tuned—you won’t want to miss out!

Vestry Highlights - Barbara Tourtelot
SPRING CLEAN UP SATURDAY, MARCH 17TH AT 8AM
Ahhhh . . . Springtime! It is upon us!! And along with it comes the need
to tidy up our surroundings. Please pitch in if you are able on Saturday,
March 17th (rain date will be the 24th). We’ll need rakes, shovels, wheel
barrows, leaf blowers, gloves, and many many hands! In addition to
preparing the grounds for Spring and Summer, we will be cleaning out and
organizing our much neglected shed which holds the Delaplane Strawberry
Festival supplies. Please mark your calendars and plan to come!
The Vestry met on February 19th in the Library of Jameson Hall.
Preliminary Orders of Business: Barbara Tourtelot was elected Vestry Register. Vestry members signed the
Declaration of Promise for service on the Vestry, as required by the Diocese. The annual Parochial Report, as
required by the Diocese, and prepared by Amanda Knouse+ and Helen Christian, was reviewed and approved
unanimously for submission.
Rector’s Report: Presented by Amanda Knouse+. Of special note, “Ashes To Go” was a great success, with
Amanda+ and Justin McIntosh of Leeds Church administering ashes to more than 35 people at the Marshall BP
Station and the Old Salem Café on Ash Wednesday. They are hoping to have more outreach efforts like that in the
future. Amanda+ reported on the Diocese’s suggestion for the use of the Anglican Church in Marshall.
Financial Review: Helen Christian, Parish Treasurer, reviewed the parish financial statements for 2018. As it was
early in the year, no particular trends yet were noted. The Vestry Executive Committee raised the option of
withdrawing a limited amount of funds from the endowment to use on a specific project or program as determined
by the Vestry. This was followed by a discussion of the overall objective for applying the withdrawn funds. A
decision was deferred for at least another month pending additional planning.
Parish Business (General Note): With 2018, all business topics will relate to three themes as guides for the work
of the Vestry, they being: worship, grow, and serve.
Parish Capital Campaign: The early steps for planning were reviewed. Some specifics mentioned: the campaign
committee will pursue a discussion with architects regarding the possible expansion of Jameson Hall and look into
organizations that specialize in grants to old churches.
Diocesan Convention: This year’s convention will be held in Richmond in the November timeframe. Bob Baldini
will accompany Amanda+ as Parish Lay Representative. Lee Johnson will serve as alternate.
Emmanuel’s Food Ministry: A report was made on the effort to reduce hunger in Upper Fauquier County. The
Food Bank in Warrenton and Fauquier FISH (provides a range of services to county residents) are two
organizations that are planning to participate on a hunger symposium in May. The Crooked Run Valley
Association has agreed to hold is semi-annual post-Route 17 cleanup picnic in the Parish Hall (date to be
determined), at which time the plan for the ministry’s program will be briefed. Moving forward, a symposium that
will include local churches, schools, and agencies is being planned for May.
Parish Spring Clean-up: Scheduled for March 17, with a backup date of March 24. Extra volunteers are needed
to clean out the storage shed.

BROTHERHOOD OF ST. ANDREW
MEN’S BREAKFAST
SATURDAY, MARCH 3RD AT 8:00AM
All men are invited for the Brotherhood’s monthly gathering. We have a solid discussion leader and two quality cooks, so it
promises to be an interesting morning. (Aren't they all?)
Please join us; it will be time well spent!
If you have questions, contact Marc Nobile or Lee Johnson.
ADULT FORUM
Sundays in Lent – 11:30am – Community Life Room The forty days of Lent are often viewed as a time set aside to prepare
our hearts and minds for the gift of the resurrection. Lent is a time of
self-examination and confession; a season of pursuing spiritual
disciplines that draw us into the life and death of Christ. As we follow
Christ to the cross this Lenten Season, consider joining us for a new
Adult Forum, entitled “The Characteristics of a Disciple.” Using the
work of Marianne Blickenstaff, we will explore various discipleship
traits including: perseverance; learning and devotion; the faith to take
risks; the ability to work with others; and humility. Each session will
challenge us to ponder the characteristics of those who followed Jesus
and to look for ways to incorporate them into our own faith journeys.
AN INTERGENERATIONAL MINISTRY
STATIONS OF THE CROSS COLORING POSTERS
Who doesn’t love to color? Regardless of age, artistic ability, or
creativity this ministry opportunity is for EVERYONE! As we
prepare our hearts throughout this season of Lent, you are invited to
follow the footsteps of Christ through illustrations created by artist
and pastor Adam Walker Cleavaland.
Eight posters depicting Jesus’ last hours and days are set up in the
community life room with everything you need to help us create
this year’s Stations of the Cross to be used on Good Friday. So,
stick around during coffee hour or swing by the church when you
have a few minutes and discover the power of prayer through
coloring!

DELAPLANE STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL
Planning Meeting
Tuesday, March 13th at 6:00pm
The time is drawing near and plans are coming together!
Please make an effort to attend and discuss the progress
of our Silver Anniversary Strawberry Festival!
This month’s DSF Meeting will take place in the
parish library. Dinner and childcare will be provided.
Parlez-vous Français?
Peut-être un peu?
Or, perhaps, you don’t speak a word of French, but would like to learn.
Kathy Baumgartner and Lee Johnson want to start a French Club in Delaplane. For an idea of the skill level required, Kathy was once fairly fluent (about 40 years ago); Lee is a novice. Regardless of your French
abilities, please join us:
Saturday March 3rd at 9:30 am
Emmanuel Delaplane’s Jameson Hall
This is an organizational meeting to determine interest, abilities, preferences, etc.
Please contact kbaum@verizon.net or lee.johnson1973@gmail.com with questions. If you cannot attend this meeting, please let us know of your
interests so we can contact you for future sessions.

BOOKS FOR THE SOUL
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21ST AT 7PM
Thanks to all who came out last week for the discussion of The
Nightingale. I really loved how our talk turned towards sisterhood and
family relations. This was such a rich book, and after we left the
meeting, I had the sense we had only scratched the surface. What a great
way to spend an evening!
This month we will be reading And the Way Home Gets Longer and
Longer by Fredrik Backman. I have no idea what it's about, but it's by
one of our favorite authors, and many of you will be pleased to know it
is a novella (read: shorter book!).
For more information about our book club, contact Erin McCarty
(egmccarty@gmail.com). Please invite a friend and bring along a snack
or drink to share!
What new habits are you taking on for Lent? It’s not too late to
participate in The Good Book Club! Episcopalians all over the world
will be spending the season of Lent and Easter reading the Gospel of
Luke and Acts of the Apostles. Led by Forward Movement, this church
wide initiative began the Sunday prior to Ash Wednesday (February 11)
and ends on Pentecost (May 20).
How does it work? Forward Movement has created a set of daily
readings to divide Luke and Acts into 50 days each. Each day,
participants will read a few verses of Luke or Acts. Readers of Forward
Day by Day can easily follow along, with Luke and Acts guiding the

accept delivery in the church office! Thank you!
As I write this, we are rapidly
closing in on the end of Lent. The
choir has worked very hard and
brought us some Mozart and
Salieri (I love the quote they gave
him in the movie “Amadeus”
when he was asked to critique
Mozart’s music—“Too many
notes” was all he could utter.)
Before Lent ends we will also
hear some Pergolesi. These are
big name composers your choir is
singing—arranged for smaller
scale forces. Yet they are working
very diligently to bring you high
quality music to enhance our
worship together. And there is
also the ever-popular response at
the passing of the peace. Every
once in a while my musical
Dennis the Menace side comes
out.
The organ is chomping at the bit
to be turned loose from the
restrained tones of Lent and is
looking forward to sounding forth
a few Alleluias again. Patience,
patience, my friend. You’ll be
able to joyfully sing shortly—and
that’s no April Fool’s Day joke.
And now, I have a special request
for all of you reading this. I enjoy
writing articles for the newsletter
but I would like to write about
topics that you would like to read.
So, can we create a dialogue in
this column instead of just a
monologue? If you have an idea
for a article or even just a question
you would like answered, please
drop me a note at
dorganist@aol.com. I’d be happy
to do my best to answer your
questions and welcome your ideas
for articles.

It is with great excitement that we announce Donna Hines as our new
seminarian, beginning this fall! Donna is a junior at Virginia Theological
Seminary. She comes to Emmanuel with a background in healthcare
chaplaincy, outreach, and a wide variety of pastoral care experience. Prior to
seminary Donna served five years as a staff chaplain at a vibrant retirement
community in Williamsburg, Virginia. Donna and her husband, Ben, have
three terrific sons, Benjamin, Daniel, and Matthew, and a Frisbee-catching
cattle dog named Luna. Donna enjoys time in nature, especially at the beach
or by a mountain stream. News has it Donna did the “Snoopy happy dance”
when she received the invitation to join the Emmanuel community.
Be on the lookout for more information regarding Donna’s first Sunday at
Emmanuel. If you are interested in serving as a lay committee member please
see Amanda+.

ANNUAL PARISH RETREAT AT SHRINE MONT
April 20-22, 2018
King David, author of many of the Psalms, once began a psalm with the words, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” I’ve often heard of Shrine Mont as being described as “the closest thing to heaven you’ll ever find.” As we continue our celebration of the resurrection, join us for a weekend away in the beauty of holiness at Shrine Mont! Enjoy fellowship with fellow members of Emmanuel and Leeds, feast on friendship and laughter, and enjoy the intentional community that only Shrine Mont can offer. Perhaps we’ll discover some other places and spaces that declare the God’s glory! If you haven’t yet, please sign up in the parish hall! Payments are due by Sunday, April 15th. Scholarships are available—contact the church office.
